Managing Online Project Submissions with Dropbox Links

Managing Online Project Submissions with Dropbox Links | Better teaching, more learning | Scoop.it

"During the last days of the semester, my inbox tends to collapse under the weight of submitted final projects, and every now and then I have the dreaded “limit exceeded” warning show up just as a deadline hits. I get emails with projects delivered in just about every form imaginable, and there are always several that don’t work at all–particularly since my university has a policy about destroying any zip file that makes its way into an email attachment. Thus I was excited to see the recent improvement to Dropbox extending the ability to link and share files."

Student Desks of the Future Feature Interactivity, Connectivity

Student Desks of the Future Feature Interactivity, Connectivity | Better teaching, more learning | Scoop.it

"Imagine a classroom where children sit at desks embedded with ‘multi-touch’ surfaces that allow them to work simultaneously in the same physical workspace, both on their own and in collaboration with others. Imagine that this system of desks is networked and connected to a central smartboard from which the teacher can send individual assignments to different desks, send one group’s work or answers to another group, intervene if an individual or group needs assistance, or pull work up to the main board for the entire class to see. This may sound like a classroom of the future, but it is in fact a classroom of the present, developed through the joint efforts of experts at Durham University’s departments of computer science, education, and psychology."

The best way to learn another language is by spending time with it and using it. The instruments are up to the learners. The apps sound like one of the many great tools out there to spend time with the target language.

Technology is here to stay, and we should use it as an ally; not viceversa.

Online Classes Mean No Dorm, Gym or Debt

Online Classes Mean No Dorm, Gym or Debt | Better teaching, more learning | Scoop.it

"Numerous articles and commentaries from inside and outside of academia are raising the alarm that American public higher education faces an unprecedented financial crisis. For years, state legislatures have been disinvesting in public colleges and universities, leaving campus administrators to struggle with how to make do with less. The result: rising debt, deferred maintenance for aging facilities, reductions in programs and course offerings, dismissals, elimination of many student and faculty services, and loss of talented faculty -- many of whom haven’t received pay increases in years -- to private universities."

Introductory Courses Should Be Just as Good as the Capstone Experience | Better teaching, more learning | Scoop.it

"One of the many criticisms about the current fascination with massive open online courses, or MOOC’s, is that they fail to improve on a basic pedagogical problem that many universities face: the large size of lecture classes. Indeed, MOOC’s exacerbate the problem by enrolling tens of thousands of students rather than just hundreds."

Using technology in the classroom the right way

Using technology in the classroom the right way | Better teaching, more learning | Scoop.it

"One of the things that I see happen far too often is people stressing over how they are going to create lessons around the new piece of technology they have in their classroom. It is this approach that is causing headaches to many and giving tech tools a bad reputation in the classroom. There is a right way and a wrong way to infusing technology in education."
