The Lasting Impact of Instructional Coaching

The Lasting Impact of Instructional Coaching | Better teaching, more learning | Scoop.it

Cause-Effect Coaching

David uses a “cause-effect coaching” method.  He shows teachers what they are doing or are not doing (the cause) and how it is related to what the students are learning or not learning (the effect).

The purpose is to show the teacher that the students may not be the cause of why the students are not learning.

The cause-effect concept was shown in the original work on classroom management by Jacob Kounin.  He summarized his research from observing teachers and classrooms and concluded that it was “the behavior of the teacher and not the behavior of the students that resulted in student learning.”

David says:

==> “School leaders and teachers must always examine how their actions or inactions may be creating barriers or creating enhancements to learning.” <==

Is Competency Based Education the Next Game Changer on the Horizon? | EmeringEdTech

Is Competency Based Education the Next Game Changer on the Horizon? | EmeringEdTech | Better teaching, more learning | Scoop.it

“Competency-based education (CBE) awards academic credit based on mastery of clearly defined competencies. CBE replaces the conventional model in which time is fixed and learning is variable with a model in which the time is variable and the learning is fixed.

CBE is built around clearly defined competencies and measurable learning objectives that demonstrate mastery of those competencies. Measuring learning by competency is not new, but various challenges facing higher education, combined with new models and technologies, have brought a new focus on CBE.

A growing number of competency-based programs have been developed at all levels of instruction. CBE capitalizes on the potential of online learning, enabling new models that can reduce both the cost and time needed to earn credentials while better preparing students for their professional lives.”

The promise of open, distance and e-learning

The promise of open, distance and e-learning | Better teaching, more learning | Scoop.it

In the context of post-secondary school education on the African continent, it is clear that current institutions cannot, and for the foreseeable future will not be able to, sufficiently address the legitimate need to increase access to higher education.

In Africa there is a crucial need not only to increase access with success, but also to increase access to diverse opportunities across the post-secondary school sector.
