Using a Question Building Chart to Provoke Student Thought

Using a Question Building Chart to Provoke Student Thought | Better teaching, more learning | Scoop.it
One of the most effective ways to provoke student thought is through the building of “rich” questions. By asking meaningful questions - and interacting with textual information – students can come to an understanding that builds upon on their own personal experiences and opinions. Through the use of a template, questions can be created in any way that you want and provide you with a specific platform to begin your questioning focus.

The questions can be based on exam questions, or directly from past exam questions.  The students can be asked about their own experiences and say whether the textual information has any application to the society in which they live, e.g. How does the information help us?

Are You a Credible Technology Leader?

Are You a Credible Technology Leader? | Better teaching, more learning | Scoop.it
We do not need our leaders to be our best users of technology, but they should know enough to safely use some of it and enthusiastically encourage and lead their teachers to use much of it.

Leadership, good leadership, transcends physical boundaries.  Technology cannot be dismissed from the leadership's responsibility to be in the know.  It is acceptable for the teachers to be more skilled than their leader in the use of technology with students.

But it is not acceptable for the leader to stay removed from its use.  We need to learn beside our faculties and know and understanding the tools they are using. Room must be made for common understanding and improved use.

Teachers, students and parents need to trust that those who make technology available and who advocate for its use know what they are talking about. The right mix of vision, knowledge, risk taking... and a dash of courage ...make schools dynamic learning environment for all of us.

The warning is against leaders giving the nod to their teachers without understanding the technology.

===> It raises issues of trust, integrity and safety. <===

The Global Teacher

The Global Teacher | Better teaching, more learning | Scoop.it

Global teachers (should) care about education as a whole, as well as their school and their classroom.  I just want to iterate that if the person only looks at sharing and learning globally, but cannot connect with those in their classroom or school, I would not consider them a “global teacher”.

They just know that we are better when we work together, not just taking, but contributing.  They know what they share makes a difference for others, as well as knowing what they learn from others makes a difference for their school and students.

So where are you on the spectrum, and what type of teacher would you want in your school?

Love the idea of flipped learning - so much potential.

Alfredo Corell's curator insight, January 20, 2014 12:25 PM

The Flipped Classroom approach is been widely implemented in schools and colleges around the world. It is even considered as one of the greatest achievements of 21st century education.

The concept behind it is to reverse the traditional classroom practices with the aid of technology. Students access the already prepared lecture materials at home, in advance of the class and in the class they engage in structured class activities to work through problems with their teachers’ help, further their knowledge and learn through collaboration with fellow students. For the Flipped model to be successful, teachers before its implementation need to assess whether it is appropriate for their curriculum and students. They need to see if their students will be receptive to the new learning environment and upon implementation and use, teachers should employ effective practices to keep the model functioning successfully.

Sharla Shults's curator insight, January 28, 2014 9:20 PM

Flipped classroom is a classroom in which students view the lecture components of the class at home, then work with the teacher in class on projects and what previously would have been called homework.

What a flipped classroom model does?
• Students watch lectures at home at their own pace, communicating with peers and teaching via online discussions.
• Concept engagement takes place in the classroom with the help of the instructor.
