Tips to improve curation and benefit both you and other users

'Timothy Leyfer's curator insight, January 24, 1:20 PM

"Explain, always clearly why something you are curating/communicating is relevant. Contextualize."

This is just one of the five great points from Sam Burroughs that we should consider when communicating relevant information to people on our list.

There are four other great tips equally as important, that we should use when communicating information to others.

In today's fast-paced world the information that we are trying to communicate to others should be user centered.

Self-Directed Learning Well Explained and 27 Actions

Self-Directed Learning Well Explained and 27 Actions | Better teaching, more learning | Scoop.it

TeachThought.com has a series of posts about self-directed learning by Terry Heick and the staff, well worth a read! “

“Learning is most effective when it’s personalised; it means something to the learner. That happens when people feel they are participants and investors in their own learning, shaping what and how they learn, and able to articulate its value to them.” — Leadbeater, Charles

It is interesting how few classroom teachers and administrators are aware of what self-directed learning is. SDL is an imperative for our children.

Avery's curator insight, March 25, 2013 11:56 PM

My Thoughts:

You can't teach someone how to learn. You can give them helpful tips and advice, but a single structure for education is not going to work for everyone. It's so much harder for people to learn their true potential, to reach their goals, when they're only shown a single path to them. You show them the path through the forest, but what if there's a rock face nearby that also leads up to where they want to go, and what if they happen to be a fantastic rock climber? It just makes more sense to show someone a map if you can, instead of directing them towards only one path.

Interesting take on a few forms of curation that can be used.  Infographic is, as the creator remarked, a little crowded, however the information is useful.

How might efforts to curate benefit from the portability and ubiquity of mobile devices? Tools like Evernote and GoodReads allow for easy and valuable curation. But the harder questions are pedagogical and curricular.

Toch weer jammer dat Microsoft Office's onderdeel OneNote niet genoemd wordt. Daar de office pakketten op vrijwel alle pc's van jongeren staan vormt dit een zeer goed (gratis) alternatief voor Evernote.

Curating yourself in social learning spaces: adding value

Curating yourself in social learning spaces: adding value | Better teaching, more learning | Scoop.it
I was having a long conversation yesterday afternoon with someone who is just returning to work after five years away, raising children. She was pondering on how to 'get' Twitter, how to do somethi...

Our reputation, our value within social learning spaces, is based upon our ability to do more than just churn information. We need to be able to find things out, but we need to be able to do things with that information, and we need to be able to change our stance and style according to the situation.

===> One size no longer fits all: we are in a constant state of flux and only the agile will thrive. <===

It’s about the storytelling, not just the facts

Allan Shaw's curator insight, March 19, 2013 1:14 AM

The human side of technology is critical to its effective use in an educational context, perhaps many other contexts as well. If the technology is not used with some discernment and if it cannot amplify considered views then it is wasteful of the effort of involvement.

Aleshia Clarke's curator insight, June 13, 2013 10:22 AM

My sister refuses to use social media, but she allows my niece to use it unsupervised. Not only is that dangerous, but it is also a lost opportunity to interact within her daughter's social life. This is particularly important to a single mom who works overtime to make ends meet. It doesn't require a huge time commitment; just having a "presence" on Facebook would be sufficient. I feel that my niece is not getting "enough" of her mother. Perhaps she would be less prone to create online drama if my sister was there listening in and guiding her.
