The SISE Town Council had their big Mother's Month celebration at the Cayo Welcome Center Sunday. Mothers got food and great entertainment. There was even a dancing contest.
The National Celebrations Commission, in conjunction with Atlantic Bank, is getting ready for the September Celebrations and is having a call to artists for this year's National Song Competition. There are 2 categories you can enter: The Belize Song and the Carnival Song. They should promote culture and the Belizean way of life. You can enter as a solo, duet, or group. Good luck to all!
Feelgood news of the day. Restore Belize and the BNE Charitable Trust teamed up last year to create 60 scholarships for Belizeans from around the country. They've been showing the kids the natural wonders of Belize, and this short video captures their trips in 2013. Thanks, BNECT and Restore Belize! "Greetings. The Belize Coalition to Save Our National Heritage is having a logo competition. If you have an idea for their logo, you have until May 24th to submit it. The winner will get $300. Good luck!
Scholarships for the next school year are being offered from Belize Bank. They have the requirements up on their website, and this year, they are offering scholarships for high school and 6th form. You can pick up application forms at the local branch. "We are seeking some bright Belizean students to become a part of our Scholarship Program! The San Ignacio Resort Hotel won the Belize Tourism Board's 'Hotel of the Year' award at their annual tourism awards Saturday. Of course they did! The top notch quality and elegance they provide really sets them above the others. Congratulations to the San Ignacio Resort Hotel! In related news, the airlines are increasing their flights to Belize. Must be to come to Cayo. "Just got the news, We won 2012 Hotel of the Year at the BTB Tourism Awards. More to come Monday :)"
Creative Koas, the documentary about the making of Kurse a di Xtabai, was shown Friday night at the Soul Project. The directors of both movies, Daniel Velazquez and Matthiew Klink, were there to answer questions from all the film students from New Mexico State University, who are in Cayo doing their own documentaries. Creative Kaos was as great as its name implies.

The NMSU students had a great time in Cayo. They've uploaded some great shots. Can't wait for the documentaries to come out. If anything good comes out of the discussion of the destruction of Noh Mul by the greedy, it'll be that the Institue of Archaeology's Anti-Looting campaign gets more attention. They've been going around the country, and were at the Benque HoC's International Museum Day celebrations last week, educating the youth on antiquities There's a lot of key information in their latest article. "Along with looting comes the destruction of ancient monuments. A monument is any old building, erections or other non-portable objects left behind by ancient civilizations such as the Maya or other historic people such as the colonizers of Belize. Legally, any building over one hundred years is considered a monument. Both monuments and antiquities are legally protected by law under the National Institute of Culture and History Act, Chapter 331 of the Laws of Belize, Revised Edition 2000."
While the San Ignacio Resort Hotel won the Hotel of the Year award, Placencia really stole the show, as it should have. A special Lifetime Achievement Award went to Jessie Young of CBS. Belize Adventure has all the BTB videos. Congratulations to all the winners! "Yesse Young of the Community Baboon Sanctuary in Bermudian Landing received the Lifetime Achievement Award. This award is given to a person who is bold enough to take risks and gloriously leads in the development of tourism in Belize. The San Igancio Public Library finished up their Education Week school visits with a trip to Santa Elena primary school. "Education week concludes with Santa Elena Primary School. It was a very informative afternoon."

Ascenthium really rocked the Cancha Marshalleck in Benque Friday night. It had been way too long since they'd played in Cayo, but they made up for it. They had a great laser light show, thanks to DJ Caesar, to go with the rocking rythym. Guido had a wicked drum solo, and thankfully they were coaxed into performing an incredible encore too. The Belize Wildlife Referral Clinic has rehabed the fox they've been taking care of for a few weeks. He's got a healthy check up, and has gained a lot of weight. Good luck, Foxy. Bishop O.P. Martin primary school had some storytelling sessions during Education Week, courtesy of the San Ignacio Public Library. "The classes of Infant 1 and 2; Standard 4 and 5 visited the SIPL as part of education week. Activities included a talk about the importance of libraries, how to handle a book and much more. They had a great library visit."
Cayo's Crystal Cave, also known as Mountain Cow Cave, had a great article written about it lately. Great way to put it: Actun Tunichil Muknal is for tourists, Mountain Cow is for adventurers. Both are great ways to spend the day. "I said it before, but I'll say it again: ATM is for tourists, Crystal is for adventurers. Crystal is different. It was a challenge the memory of which still gets my blood pumping. It is impossible to overstate how incredibly breathtaking it is. It was one of the most exciting and intimate ways I have ever experienced the earth. I will never forget it."
