Xunantunich has a new visitor's center along with some new bathrooms. They should be open for guests soon.
Photo of the day. This might be the scene today if you go to Xunantunich due to the tropical depression in the area, which caused the closing of ATM. Demian Solano captured a magnificent shot, in black and white, of the cloud cover from the top of El Castillo. He says it's one of his favorite pictures. Agreed. Keep on getting those awesome shots, Demian! "Only when I got to the top did I realize how close the storm really was.. and the vantage point was so magnificent that it gave this photographer the gift of a 'once in a lifetime' moment. This I will never be able to replicate again, not even if I tried… Not that I want to… that was that, and I captured it. After a couple of shots and realising that I was probably holding the highest metal object, I diligently made my way down. This is the image that reminds me of that stormy evening at Xunantunich"
The Jade Mask that was found at Cahal Pech and adopted by the SIRH is about to go on display at the Science Museum of Minnesota's Maya exhibit. Thanks, Shauniece Heusner, Research & Education Officer at the Museum of Belize, for the great history of the mask. "This mask was adopted by San Ignacio Resort Hotel from the Museum of Belize & House of Culture. This mask was found at Cahal Pech along with 3 large jade celts and is dated to the Terminal Classic period around A.D. 800-900. This amazing ancient Belize artifact is made of jade and shell and was used as a belt worn by a royal ruler along with the accompanying celts that were found. Currently, both the mask and the celts are being installed in the Maya: Hidden Worlds Revealed exhibition at the Science Museum of Minnesota, along with other pieces from the Belize National Collection. The exhibition opens June 21st, 2013."

The Catwalk in the Jungle Fashion Show at the Cayo Welcome Center last night was an outstanding success. The venue was filled as the models of all ages showed the fashions on the catwalk. Kubuli sponsored the event, and had special prices on beer. There was a silent auction with such great prizes as resort stays, canoe trips, and phones. Emmanuel Mangar was there strumming, and Almost 7 ended the night with some rock and roll. "What a great night at the Cayo Welcome Center! It was packed, and the fashion show went off without a hitch. Emmanuel Mangar played, as did Almost 7(a mix of Ascenthium and Echoes). The models did a wonderful job on the catwalk."
There's still time to submit essays for Chaa Creek's Children’s Summer Camp Scholarship Program. They have a short video out about the program. "Every year we team up with a number of private sector businesses to offer a weeklong summer camp scholarship program for Belize's resident school children between the ages of 8 to 13 years old in order to educate them about biodiversity, natural resource conservation, the ancient Maya, traditional healing, and the three "R's" Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. The program aims to install memorable values that will have an impact on the way children conduct their lives, their relationship with our fragile Earth, and the sustainable development of our future."
In related news, they have another submission for the essay competition. http://belize-travel-blog.chaacreek.com/2013/06/why-i-want-to-be-an-eco-kid-3/

They've decided to skip the Summer busy season, so the flights won't start until November 15th. Tropic Air currently has one flight a day to Cayo.

We have a winner! Congratulations, Jeanelle Mencias, for coming up with this year's September Celebrations theme: "Belize in You, Belize in Me, Land of the Free." Shouldn't something that rhymes with 'you' be in the 3rd place? Like, ' The Baymen Knew.' Anyways, well done, and she will get $1000 for winning the competition. "Belmopan resident Jeanelle Mencias has won the competition for the theme for the September Celebrations. A statement today from by the National Celebrations Commission announced that the theme to be used for the 215th anniversary of the Battle of St. George’s Caye and the 32nd anniversary of Belize’s Independence is: “Belize in you, Belize in me, Land of the Free.” The official release says Mencias’ submission was chosen from among 125 entries and was selected because “it engenders a spirit of personal pride and nationalism about being Belize and Belizean.” As her prize, Mencias gets a cash award of BZ$1,000."
While the list of Belize's amazing Mayan archaeoligical sites should be a top 20, out of the 5 on this list, Cayo has 3: Xunantunich, Caracol, and Actun Tunichil Muknal. They forgot Cahal Pech and El Pilar. The article gives great descriptions of the sites, and describes Cayo too: 'laid-back San Ignacio is the quintessential traveler’s hub, the launch pad for exhilarating adventures in the remote Cayo District, a wild place where ancient mysticism and incredible biodiversity coalesce to provide a sensual and cerebral adventure of epic proportions.' "What Xunantunich may lack in scale, it makes up for in its supreme location, crowning a limestone ridge that affords panoramic views of the Cayo District and the patchwork terraces of neighboring Guatemala... Radiating from the site’s ceremonial axis -- the pyramid of El Castillo -- are a series of residences built for the city’s elite denizens, in addition to a ball court, all which date from the Classic Period, circa A.D. 200 to 900. Rising from the jungle to a vertigo-inducing 135 feet, El Castillo features restored stucco reliefs that during the city’s heyday would have adorned the perimeter of the entire pyramid. Despite being one of the most heavily touristed of Belize’s Maya ruins, in part due to its accessibility, a supernatural aura holds sway. The name, Xunantunich, translated as 'Stone Woman,' dates to the late 19th century when, so myth and legend has it, a female figure dressed in white ascended the stairs of El Castillo before vanishing into the temple’s stone walls. The city reached its zenith around A.D. 750 before an earthquake, interpreted by the Maya as the wrath of God, precipitated its demise."

Here's a nice Eco Kid essay from Lillian Aguirre, who really captures the essence of what it means to be and Eco Kid. She's going to love her time learning about nature at Chaa Creek. "I want to be an eco-kid because I love nature and would like to help to protect the rainforest. When I visit the rainforest, the shade from the canopy of tree refreshes me. The smell of green trees relaxes me and the singing of the birds inspires me. I hope and pray that I might find and fallow a jaguar’s paw prints on a trail or I may look up high above and see an owl staring at me. If I am lucky I hope to see soldier ants carrying leave to build their homes wild pigs grunting by howler monkeys hanging on trees branches like thunder."
The Catwalk in the Jungle Fashion Show was great - the Cayo Welcome Center really is the perfect place for events of this type - and here are some more awesome pictures from the event, courtesy of D Russell Photography.
