7 Great iPad Apps to Promote Visual Thinking ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning

7 Great iPad Apps to Promote Visual Thinking ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning | Best Practices in Instructional Design & Use of Learning Technologies | Scoop.it

Today while I was looking for a citation from " Making Thinking Visible: How to Promote Engagement, Understanding, and Independence for All Learners " http://ow.ly/k2SpU ; , it dawned on me to compile a list of the  popular iPad apps that promote visual thinking. Making Thinking Visible is by all means a must read for those of you interested in knowing how thinking can be made visible at any grade level and across all subject areas through the use of effective questioning, listening, documentation, and facilitative structures called thinking routines. Another book I have in my shelf and which is more or less similar to the one cited above is " Blah Blah Blah: What To Do When Words Don't Work " http://ow.ly/k2Svy ; in which Dan walks his readers through the different practices of making thinking vivid with less words."

Peer Review

Peer Review | Best Practices in Instructional Design & Use of Learning Technologies | Scoop.it
Created by Laura Guertin, Pennsylvania State University Brandywine "For generations, the academic community has relied on peer review as a way of enhancing the knowledge base and encouraging serious scholarship. Peer review can offer many of the same benefit to students... [and] computers [can] mediate the interaction among peers." - Gehringer (2000)

Why use peer review - students improve science communication skills

Peer review is useful for instructors of large introductory-level courses that want to challenge their students to think critically, synthesize information, and communicate science in nontechnical language. Through use of technological tools, electronic peer review provides the option of not restricting the peer-review process to a particular location and/or time, while the grading load is lessened on an instructor.

"Making use of free iPad apps in the classroom can enable you to diversify your teaching, while providing the opportunity to inspire and get students more engaged in lessons. There  are many different educational apps available, which range from apps like Evernote that allow you to organize your teaching materials, through to interactive whiteboards from Educreations, and Screen Chomp, a screen recording app that can be very useful for teaching lessons on the go. What, then, are some of the best iPads that can be used in the classroom, whether you have multiple tablets, or just one as a teaching tool for different groups?"

#MOOC for Teachers: Coursera Offers Online Teacher Training Program | MindShift

#MOOC for Teachers: Coursera Offers Online Teacher Training Program | MindShift | Best Practices in Instructional Design & Use of Learning Technologies | Scoop.it

Berry supports the idea of MOOCs for professional development in theory because he’d like to see teachers be able to choose and direct their own learning. But he thinks success hinges on skilled virtual facilitators who both know the subject matter and how to foster high quality discussion and communication online in order to make it work well.

Via Nik Peachey
Jason R Levine's curator insight, May 4, 10:05 AM

Lively, passionate, (bordering on) seductive teachers and facilitators, leads to exciting and meaningful interaction online and off. When MOOCs are conceived and designed this way, they will become the places for highly-engaged social learning that we want them to be.

Nimah Nirvanova's curator insight, May 7, 9:26 AM

collaborating, sharing and evolving with MOOCs

Robin Kay's curator insight, May 8, 9:23 AM

Interesting move - I would watch this one closely.  MOOCs seem better than large lecturs and in Coursera are much better designed.  Not sure I would want to be taught by a teachers whose only credentials were from Coursera, but I can see other higher education areas being better served by MOOCs.

The corridor of uncertainty: Who are MOOCs really for? | #MOOC

The corridor of uncertainty: Who are MOOCs really for? | #MOOC | Best Practices in Instructional Design & Use of Learning Technologies | Scoop.it

I've written before about the irrelevance of looking deeply into completion rates of MOOCs. Due to the fact that MOOCs are free and (relatively) open they should not be compared to regular university courses. The typical completion rates of around 10% obviously alarm those who view MOOCs as alternatives to for-credit courses. However, given the fact that such a completion rate for a course with 50,000 students would still give more successful students than several years of campus courses, they maybe don't do so badly after all. What so many articles seem to miss is the fact that the target group for MOOCs is not traditional university students at all.
