Amazon forest loss threatens five South American countries | Climate New Network

Amazon forest loss threatens five South American countries | Climate New Network | Best Blog | Scoop.it

The continued destruction of the Amazon to exploit its resources for mining, agriculture and hydro-power is threatening the future of the South American continent, according to a report by campaigning groups using the latest scientific data.

Five countries – Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru – share the Amazon, and for all of them the forest area occupies more than 40% of their territory. All face threats to their water supply, energy production, food and health.

In addition, the report says, because of the over-exploitation of the region rainfall will fall by 20% over a heavily-populated area far to the south of Amazonia known as the La Plata basin, covering parts of Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay and Uruguay.

Last month it was reported that deforestation in Amazonia had increased by almost a third in the past year, with an area equal to 50 football pitches destroyed every minute since 2000.

The report, the Amazonia Security Agenda, authored by the Global Canopy Programme  and CIAT, the International Centre for Tropical Agriculture, says the prosperity of the region is based on the abundance of water.

There always seemed to be an endless supply of water, but the combination of industrial and agricultural pollution and droughts is creating a once unthinkable vulnerability for the five countries of Amazonia.

Michael Mazo's curator insight, December 13, 2014 9:47 PM

When it comes to rainforests and their biodiversity its very important to preserve all vegetation and wild life. The threat of deforestation and poaching will always play a role in the issue of decaying rainforests. The Amazon is one of the largest rainforests in the world and contain such diverse biodiversity that some species only reside in these areas. The exploitation of such resources impact the Amazon in more ways than one. Many endangered species live in this region and to manipulate the area would mean causing these animals to go extinct.

How To Use The New Pinterest Analytics Tool For Business

How To Use The New Pinterest Analytics Tool For Business | Best Blog | Scoop.it
Pinterest marketing is a fairly new concept even by social media standards. Pinterest’s growing popularity as a major social network, however, means that this pin board sharing social simply cannot be ignored as a powerful marketing avenue. Indeed, the very introduction of this new Analytics tool goes to show just how much marketers are using the site, and user demand is dictating a more thorough overview of how potential customers are interacting with your pins.

The original Analytics tool provided by Pinterest was quite limited in the data it generated. The information centred only around how users were interacting with the Pin It button on your website – Pins and Repins from your website, visitors to your website via Pinterest, most Repinned content and most clicked content. This provided some useful insights, but not nearly enough from which to form meaningful predictions and strategies.   The new Analytics feature does still give you all of this information, plus a lot more besides – including how users engage with your content beyond the Pin It button. Indeed, you can now find out what happens after users click away from your Pinterest profile, provided that all actions do indeed originate there. Pinterest users spend a lot of time curating content for their boards that do not necessarily originate from their own website, and the new Analytics tool gives you the complete low down on exactly what they’re up to, and how you can optimise and maximise your presence on Pinterest.

The Political Geography of Hong Kong's Protests

The Political Geography of Hong Kong's Protests | Best Blog | Scoop.it
The territory's residents are demanding democracy in city intersections, not central squares.

The significance of the protests, which have brought tens of thousands into the streets, lies not only in what protesters are demanding but also in where they're demanding it—and where they're not. Consider that pro-democracy demonstrations in Hong Kong typically happen in Victoria Park, which is about two and a half miles from Central District and which hosts the annual June 4 candlelight vigil commemorating the 1989 Tiananmen Square crackdown in Beijing. This time around, however, few police or protesters have ventured there.

The unpredictable, spontaneous geography of the protests is important precisely because it transcends the status quo. It is a testament to how serious these demonstrations are that they refuse to be contained.

Alec Castagno's curator insight, October 7, 2014 10:02 AM

The increased visibility of the internet and globalization has made large scale demonstration not only a good way to show civil discontent but the preferred method of increasing awareness of an issues across the world. Because Hong Kong is such an integrated part of global economy, they can stage these massive protests without too much fear of violent police reaction, as the world will be quick to condemn such action as soon as it happens. While the protests started as a student movement, it has now spread throughout the city and both younger and older people, students and professionals, have begun to participate. This popular participation shows how serious these issues are to the people of Hong Kong.

Chandler and Zane's curator insight, October 16, 2014 4:44 PM

Political: There have been lots of protest lately in China. Chief executive CY Leung announced that he is planning to shut down Hong Kong's  central district. People are not happy with this and the protest are becoming very big for this little island.

Kaitlin Young's curator insight, December 13, 2014 2:43 PM

The seemingly random geography of protests shows an inability to be contained and how demographics play a key role in these protests. The protests have broken up into multiple smaller groups, blocking off intersections, and popping up in different locations that are not traditionally used for protesting. Instead of amassing in one large group, the protesters are using an almost guerrilla-like tactic by breaking into smaller numbers that are harder to disband or predict. While protests were traditionally held in Victoria Park, these groups are popping up in all sorts of locations, including residential, school, tourist, and shopping locations. Many college and high school aged children are joining the fray, which is why protests are occurring in areas synonymous with students and younger demographics. Families are also getting involved, which is why some are in residential areas. It is evident that people from all different demographics support democracy.

The cloud computing sales pitch is seductive because the cloud offers many advantages. There are no utility bills to pay, no server room staff who want the night off, and no crazy tax issues for amortising the cost of the machines over N years. Very detailed review. To quote "At first glance, the options seem close to identical. You can choose from many of the same distributions, and from a wide range of machine configuration options. But if you start poking around, you'll find differences -- including differences in performance and cost."

The Many, Many, Many Things You Should Say "NO" To At Work

The Many, Many, Many Things You Should Say "NO" To At Work | Best Blog | Scoop.it

Be Ruthless

“Quite candidly, I’m really ruthless in terms of doing only those things which are absolutely essential. I’m saying no to a lot, both in work and life. I see a lot of working moms who think they have to be 110% at work, and then volunteer to run the school auction. We’ve become so awful at saying no. I try hard to become incredibly selective about those things I engage with, so I can be really present for the stuff that I’m doing, and be really engaged with my kids in a meaningful way. People are trying to accomplish too much, and they’re killing themselves in the process.”

How the Rosetta Spacecraft Will Land on a Comet

How the Rosetta Spacecraft Will Land on a Comet | Best Blog | Scoop.it
The two-part Rosetta spacecraft is designed to orbit and land on a comet. See how it will orbit and land on the Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko in November 2014.

After 10 years in space, the Rosetta spacecraft closes in on its cometary prey. Rosetta will go into orbit near the nucleus of comet 67p/Churyumov-Gerasimenko. The probe is carrying a small lander designed to settle on the comet nucleus, take samples and conduct experiments.

Rosetta is the first mission designed to both orbit a comet and deposit a lander on its surface. Part of Rosetta’s mission is to catalog the elements and molecules that exist in the comet’s dust. A previous sample-return mission to a different comet found particles of organic matter that are the building blocks of life.

The lander was named after Philae Island in the Nile River.  A comet nucleus has very low gravity, so the lander relies on harpoons and ice screws to secure itself to the surface.a comet and deposita lander on its surface. Part of Rosetta’s mission is to catalog the elements and molecules that exist in the comet’s dust. A previous sample-return mission to a different comet found particles of organic matter that are the building blocks of life.

Rosetta took a winding path through the solar system, performing slingshot maneuvers past the Earth and Mars to use those planets’ gravity for a speed boost. The probe examined two asteroids – Steins and Lutetia – before closing in on its primary prey, the comet known as 67p/Churyumov-Gerasimenko.
