Infographie : La TV connectée en France | Benchmarks OTT | Scoop.it

Cord-cutters have more than doubled in six years, primarily due to cost

Cord-cutters have more than doubled in six years, primarily due to cost | Benchmarks OTT | Scoop.it

There's a war for TV, and the metrics firm Nielsen has been tracking it. The firm today released a report that found that the number of cord-cutters — households that aren't receiving television broadcasts through traditional means — has more than doubled in the past six years. Over five million households are now what Nielsen calls "zero-tv" homes, but even if those are trending upward, they still account for less than five percent of all households.

Nielsen found that the majority of these nontraditionally connected homes are getting content on other devices, with computers currently eclipsing tablets and smartphones. Though these households are in part defined by a lack of subscription to traditional TV providers, 48 percent of zero-tv households watch TV content through subscription services. For nearly a third of these homes, cost is the primary factor in not subscribing to television services.

How Pay TV Lite services could become OTT giants

How Pay TV Lite services could become OTT giants | Benchmarks OTT | Scoop.it

‘Pay TV Lite’ OTT services from traditional platform operators like Viasat, with its standalone subscription for on-demand content using Viaplay, and BSkyB, with its NOW TV brand, take on new significance when viewed in the context of a possible migration from broadcast delivery to streaming. As we have reported previously, it might be economic to migrate smaller SD channels from broadcast spectrum to OTT-only in the next decade but only if they can achieve the same audience reach as an online entity.

These innovative offers give non-Pay TV customers the chance to buy premium content using online video delivered to various connected devices including the Xbox games console and are a good example of how Pay TV can be more ambitious with OTT. NOW TV is probably the best example of this new service category, giving otherwise free-to-air consumers the chance to rent movies or subscribe to linear movie channels, with sports and general entertainment channels to follow. NOW TV always looked like more than a counter-offensive against Netflix and Guy Bisson, Research Director for Television at IHS Screen Digest, thinks this is BSkyB’s future-facing platform for if the world does go OTT.

Roku Raises a $60 Million Round, Led by Fidelity, to Fight for the Living Room

Roku Raises a $60 Million Round, Led by Fidelity, to Fight for the Living Room | Benchmarks OTT | Scoop.it

Tim Cook said Apple TV is still a side project. But bringing digital entertainment to your TV is all Roku does, and they’re raising more money to do it.

Roku has raised a massive $60 million round, led by new investor Fidelity; publisher and TV station owner Hearst Corp. has also put money into the company.

Previous strategic investors, including BSkyB, News Corp. and Dish, are back as well (News Corp. also owns this website). Roku has now raised $130 million to date, said CEO Anthony Wood.

Wood said the new money will fund a new push for Roku — getting its new software installed as a de facto operating system for a new wave of smart TVs coming to the market. Wood figures that most TV manufacturers, with the exception of Samsung, aren’t going to have the desire or ability to create decent software for their boxes, and he’d like Roku to assume that role.

Netflix, Reed Hastings Survive Missteps to Join Silicon Valley's Elite

Netflix, Reed Hastings Survive Missteps to Join Silicon Valley's Elite | Benchmarks OTT | Scoop.it
How Netflix—which accounts for a third of all Web traffic on any given weeknight—cheated death, outmaneuvered Hollywood, and innovated its way into tech's top tier

On a normal weeknight, Netflix (NFLX)accounts for almost a third of all Internet traffic entering North American homes. That’s more than YouTube, Hulu, Amazon.com (AMZN), HBO Go, iTunes, and BitTorrent combined. Traffic to Netflix usually peaks at around 10 p.m. in each time zone, at which point a chart of Internet consumption looks like a python that swallowed a cow. By midnight Pacific time, streaming volume falls off dramatically.

Marché vidéo : bilan 2012 et perspectives 2013

Marché vidéo : bilan 2012 et perspectives 2013 | Benchmarks OTT | Scoop.it
