Why your social media plan needs gurus and storytellers

Why your social media plan needs gurus and storytellers | Expertise | thought leadership | content marketing | written content dominates | article marketing | Scoop.it

"I’m a storyteller, not a strategist

Anytime I get on the phone with a business who wants to hire me to do some social media work and they ask me about, analysis, measurement tools and anything that has to do with numbers I tell them “I’m an Indian person who is lousy at math. Contrary to popular belief we’re not all good with numbers.” My strength is the ability to tell great stories, and create content. Does that mean I’m useless? Absolutely not … and it’s because there is a digital divide emerging."

I love the core message of this post -- for business success hire both a strategiest AND a storyteller!

Why? Because you will receive the best of both worlds. Not only will you identify and execute (hopefully) an winning social media strategy, you will also learn how to tell your business stories effectively in different social media channels. Yeah!

Go read the article for more info on why this marriage makes so much sense.

Therapeutisch schrijven werkt

Therapeutisch schrijven werkt | Expertise | thought leadership | content marketing | written content dominates | article marketing | Scoop.it

Just Story It - Scoops

Just Story It - Scoops | Expertise | thought leadership | content marketing | written content dominates | article marketing | Scoop.it

Here are the best articles from across the web that I can find on using stories and storytelling in business.

I've chosen them because they actually make a contribution to our knowledge and wisdom about stories, show us how to apply stories to growing our businesses, or give valuable how-to tips.

I weed out all the junk. And besides, who needs another post in why storytelling is important?? Where's the beef?? We want the meat!

I've written reviews of each article to share what I like best, what you can get from reading the article, or what may be missing in the article.

How To Find A Topic: Click on the Filter tab above, and type in a keyword. All the articles with that keyword will appear.

I may occassionally review an article that I think is problematic as a way to educate us all, although most I will simply pass over.  If you wonder if I've seen an article that is not included here, send me a message and I'll respond.

After doing biz story work for over a decade (and with a PhD in Folklore) I hope you find many great insights and tips here. Many thanks for visiting and enjoy the articles!

And I hope you will also visit my website for more tips and tools, & take the free Story IQ assessment so you can see how well developed your storytelling skills and knowledge is: http://www.juststoryit.com/storyiq  ;

Hello Karen. "Here are the best articles from across the web that I can find on using stories and storytelling in business." Please scoop a new link to these articles. The link you put in the comments only points at your scoop page. Or was the message that your scoop page IS the collection of the great articles? A bit unclear. (PS: I suggested a scoop for you today)
Karen Dietz's comment, September 11, 2013 8:52 PM
Hi Thorsten -- the link needs fixing and I'm trying to do get that done. Thanks for your patience. The link should actually be to the entire curation. This post is a permanent post that acts as a kind of editorial page. The idea is when people want to direct others to the entire collection, they can scoop/re-scoop this page which should lead people to the site. Thanks for the comment and I'll work on clearing up any confusion! And many thanks for the suggestion, which I thought was fabulous.

If part of your branding is connected to your local place, then are there additional kinds of stories you should be adding to your biz story mix?

Absoslutely! And here's the list based on an National Public Radio Facebook experiment.

Now this may not be the most sophisticated research ever conducted, but frankly, we need all the help we can get generating ideas for stories for blogs, articles, presentations, and the like. So I'll take ideas where I can get them!

And before we go much further, let's ask this question: who wouldn't benefit from stories about your local geographic area into the mix???

My answer? no one. That means everyone could benefit from this post!

So can you add stories that explain more about your 'place'? How about 'curiosity stimulators' regarding your location? Or 'topical buzzers'?

There are 9 types of stories explained here in this article and I know you will get ideas from reading it.

Karl Heiselman, the head of Wolff Olins, a brand consulting firm, says job candidates’ sincerity about their goals can be more important than whether they are an exact fit for the position.

Via Elsemiek Meijs

Elsemiek Meijs's curator insight, December 17, 2012 5:31 AM

This interview is about how to use storytelling for job interviewing! Just have the candidate answer this one big question: What's your story? They can answer that a million ways, and where somebody goes with the answer is a pretty good indication of who they are.

Karl states that if the skills are there, the most important thing is whether he wants to hang out and talk with the person.

"It’s not a likability contest as much as it’s about chemistry. The first thing I always ask is, “What’s your story?” The way somebody answers that is a pretty good indication of what they’re all about. If they’re just talking about the job, I find that really unattractive. If I feel like they’re being sincere and honest about what it is that they want to do with their life, even if it doesn’t line up exactly with what we want in our position, I find that far more attractive."
