How Belk Wooed Birmingham | Business Alabama

How Belk Wooed Birmingham | Business Alabama | Belk, Inc. Modern. Southern. Style. | Scoop.it

Jan Clevenger, Chair Belk Western Division

Michele Dickey Portfolio's insight:

In 1888, William Henry Belk opened his first store in Monroe, N.C., with $750 in savings, a $500 loan, and $3,000 worth of goods taken on consignment. His focus on customer service and offering good prices made his store an instant hit, and it eventually evolved into Belk Inc., the nation’s largest family-owned-and-operated department store company, with revenues of $3.78 billion in 2012, from 301 stores across 16 Southern states, including 22 stores in Alabama.

But Belk’s entrance into Alabama’s biggest city was a challenge. Although Belk had operated smaller stores in more rural areas of Alabama, it had no presence in the state’s major cities until it acquired Parisian in 2006. Founded in Birmingham in 1877, Parisian was beloved in Alabama and a sought-after tenant for upscale retail centers like The Summit in Birmingham and major malls in Huntsville, Montgomery and Tuscaloosa.

When Saks Inc., then-owner of Parisian stores, announced its plan to sell the stores to Belk, many in Alabama were unsure what to expect. Unable to get information about the type of store that would be taking over its anchor space at The Summit, property owner Bayer Properties filed a lawsuit in 2007.

“The covenants associated with the lease at The Summit required the tenant to maintain operations at a certain level, operating as a first-class, fashion department store,” says Jeffrey Bayer, founder and principal of Bayer Properties. “When the acquisition was announced, Belk did not operate what is known as a fashion department store in Alabama, and we couldn’t get anybody at Saks or Belk to answer our questions about their intentions. We felt like we had to protect our asset, so we filed the lawsuit to challenge whether they would adhere to the requirements of the lease.”

In response, Belk executives quickly arrived in Birmingham and met with Bayer. Tim Belk assured Bayer that his company intended to create a first-class fashion department store similar to its flagship store in Charlotte’s SouthPark Mall. “Once they really sat down with us and understood our concerns, they started making commitments about how they would inventory the store to attract the type of shoppers the Summit was meant to attract,” Bayer says.

Not only did Bayer drop the lawsuit, but “we patched up our relationship very early on,” he says. “And we have been more than pleased with Belk. The company is a very honorable, progressive retailer who is all about quality, and they have my highest respect.”

By late 2008, Belk had completed a $13 million renovation to its Summit store, including 50,000 additional square feet, new lighting and signs, and unique visual presentations that show off certain labels. Since then, Belk has made significant investments in its stores in other cities across the state. Currently, the company is developing a new, $20 million, 170,000-square-foot store in Huntsville’s Bridge Street Town Centre, slated to open in late 2014.

Belk offers a private label with upscale flair and regional distinction, says Jan Clevenger, who chairs Belk’s Western Division.
Belk set out to win over Alabama shoppers with remodeled stores and targeted inventory.

“We make moves and try to stay ahead of the trends,” says Jan Clevenger, who chairs Belk’s Western Division, headquartered in Birmingham. “We don’t wait until things go bad and then decide we need to cut expenses. We give everybody a voice, even employees at the lowest levels, and constantly look for ways to be better.”

Clevenger says Belk sets out to develop “fabulous” private brands. Rather than plain and simple, as is often the standard for private-label brands, Belk’s New Directions brand is colorful, profitable and “very Southern,” she says. “A great, growing private brand allows us to offer something special that is different from other stores.”

Belk also partners with leading designers and celebrities to offer exclusive lines. This year, the company’s 125 anniversary, Belk is introducing private labels from Cynthia Rowley and Cam Newton, as well as several new product lines from emerging Southern designers. Winners of Belk’s inaugural Southern Designer Showcase, including Cynthia Rowley, will appear at in-store events and their products will be sold in stores and online at belk.com.

Skillful merchandizing was essential to winning Alabama customers, but almost as important was Belk management’s understanding of the role community contribution plays in cultivating customer loyalty.

Philanthropy has always been a core value of the 125-year-old company, and upon entering Alabama, Belk cemented its place in the community by getting to know the local nonprofits and finding out how to serve them.

“We looked at the relationships that Parisian had in the community and tried to continue those relationships,” says Clevenger. “Not only did we honor those relationships, but we found ways to do even more.”

Belk donates in-kind gifts and lends employees to a variety of causes in Alabama such as the Breast Cancer Research Foundation of Alabama (BCRF), YWCA and Junior League of Birmingham, Huntsville and Mobile. Belk lends its visual team to the YWCA to decorate for its annual Winter Wonderland event, and a group of Belk employees deliver snacks every other week for the children in YWCA’s after-school program.

The BCRF, a nonprofit that raises funds for UAB’s Comprehensive Cancer Center, had long depended on support from Parisian. “When Belk took over, the company sent a team to Birmingham to meet with all the nonprofits that Parisian had supported,” says Dolly O’Neal, BCRF co-founder.

When McKay Belk, then the company’s president and chief merchandising officer, came to tour the Comprehensive Cancer Center, he handed O’Neal his own personal gift to the Foundation, a check for $25,000. “That just cemented what we already knew about the company, that they were strongly committed to doing good in our community,” O’Neal says.

Great Southern Merchandiser Celebrates 125 Years The Old Fashioned Way

This year, Belk is celebrating its 125th anniversary in its traditional manner, with a series of merchandise promotions and community support initiatives.

“It is a very special privilege for Belk to be a part of Southern communities for 125 years, and we don’t take that lightly,” says Johnny Belk, president and chief operating officer of Belk Inc. “We are humbled by that fact and owe our success to the associates who give so much to this company and to our customers. Belk is grounded in the values established by my grandfather, and they are still relevant to our customers today.”

More than 125 exclusive products are available for purchase this year in Belk stores and on belk.com from Belk partners and designers, such as Michael Kors, Ralph Lauren, Jessica Simpson and Sam Edelman. Customers also can register online to participate in 125 Days of Prizes, in which Belk will award a prize valued from $500 to $6,500 every day. The dedicated website for that promotion is belk125prizes.com.

Throughout this year, Belk also is sponsoring community support initiatives. Through a $2 million partnership with the Points of Light Institute, Belk will celebrate 125 Days of Service, and Belk associates will work in local schools to help with makeover projects. The school project, which kicked off in March, will serve 225 schools throughout the Belk footprint.

Phyllis Hudson drove about 30 miles to Belk at Parkway Place Mall on Wednesday morning, unaware that the retailer was celebrating its 125th year in business with a public anniversary party that drew up to 200 people.

Hudson, who said she has shopped at Belk for 10 years, travels from her hometown outside Fayetteville, Tenn., at least three times a month to the Huntsville flagship store. Hudson perused the clothing racks Wednesday morning as Belk associates, community members and city officials recognized the department store's birthday.

In September, Belk in Huntsville announced it will build a two-story flagship store at Bridge Street with upgraded clothing lines. The store will leave Madison Square Mall, which also held an anniversary party Wednesday, after the new facility opens in fall 2014.

"I hate that, because I live closer to Madison Square Mall, but it's not going to keep me from shopping here," Hudson said. "Belk has a wonderful selection. The name speaks for itself."

Belk, which opened on May 29, 1888 as a small bargain store by 25-year-old William Henry Belk, launched in the farming community of Monroe, N.C. Under the name of New York Racket, the store originally sold sewing supplies, work clothes, hats, shoes, kitchen items and household equipment. Within three years, Belk and his brother, Dr. John M. Belk, began expanding the company by training others to open new stores.

By 1893, the brothers opened a second store in Chester, S.C., and a third in Union, S.C., the following year. With the help of Belk's children and grandchildren, the store grew to become a multi-billion dollar company that now serves 16 states.

Belk, which operates 300 fashion department stores, recently reported sales of $3.5 billion during the last fiscal year. Belk in Decatur completed a six-month, $5.5 million expansion last year, adding an additional 13,000 square feet of space at its store in Decatur Mall. A separate 13,000-square-foot Belk Home store also opened last year in Decatur.

"I hate that, because I live closer to Madison Square Mall, but it's not going to keep me from shopping here," Hudson said. "Belk has a wonderful selection. The name speaks for itself."

Belk regional store manager Janet Brown said construction at the new $20 million Belk store at Bridge Street is underway, as crews continue to drain and fill the lake to begin construction, which is expected to start later this year. The store is scheduled to open in October 2014.

"We're really looking forward to the potential impact the new store will bring to the Huntsville community in being able to offer two flagship stores within the same city," Brown said.

All 301 Belk stores held anniversary parties and gave away free gift cards Wednesday, but Parkway Place was among larger stores that hosted enhanced celebrations. Gift cards ranging from $5 to $1,000 in value were distributed to the first 100 customers at each store.

Through July 10, customers can go online to take part in 125 Days of Prizes. Belk will award prizes valued from $500 to $6,500 each day until the contest is over. To register, visit Belk's Facebook page or their website.

Belk is also holding a $2 million company-wide service program with volunteer organization Points of Light to celebrate the department store's 125th year in business. Belk employees will complete makeovers at 225 Title I schools in 16 states March 10 through July 10.

Last week, Belk completed a makeover at Austinville Elementary in Decatur. Brown said the company will send workers to Lakewood Elementary in Huntsville on June 11.

"On this day we're celebrating our rich heritage over the last 125 years, but we also want to celebrate our bright future," said Belk Chairman and CEO Tim Belk, grandson of founder William Henry Belk. "Today is about thanking our customers, associates and vendors for their support in the past and their partnership going forward."

The company, founded on this date in 1888, gave the first 100 customers at each of its 301 stores gift cards today.
Michele Dickey Portfolio's insight:

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama – Belk Inc., the Charlotte-based department store chain that has 22 stores in Alabama, celebrated its 125th anniversary today with dance routines, cupcakes, confetti and gift cards for early-bird customers.

The company, which entered the Birmingham market in 2005 and acquired the city’s much-loved Parisian chain a year later, was founded on May 29, 1888 by William Henry Belk, grandfather of current CEO Tim Belk and President John R. Belk. The chain remains family owned.

Susan Held, general manager of the Belk store at The Summit shopping center, paused while greeting customers this morning and said Belk management had worked hard to earn the loyalty of those who had been lifelong Parisian regulars. Sheila Fountain and Angela Sullivan, who arrived early to make sure they were first in line to enter the Summit store when it opened, said Belk had succeeded.

“I love the merchandise,” Sullivan said. “And if I can get something free, that’s wonderful.”

The first 100 customers at each store were given gift cards with values ranging from $5 to $1,000.

The opening at the Summit store included a dance performance by a group of Spain Park High School students backed by two singers and horn players, streamers fired from confetti cannons and speeches from city leaders. Chuck Faush, chief of staff to Birmingham Mayor William Bell, praised the chain for its charitable endeavors. The company raises millions of dollars for nonprofits with its semi-annual charity sales.

“Belk should be an example for other corporations,” Faush said.

In addition to the gift cards given to customers this morning, customers also can register online to win prizes. The company will give away a prize valued at $500 to $6,500 daily for 125 days. Customers can register on Belk’s Facebook page or the event’s web page.

Employees from one local company volunteered at Ketron Elementary on Thursday to give back to the community.

Belk employees volunteered their time to help build a picnic table, two bookshelves, magic carpet squares for the children to sit and read and a mural for the elementary school.

“It’s basically Belk of Kingsport’s way of getting involved with the community and giving back to the community,” said store manager for Belk in Kingsport, Farrah Henry. “We have many associates that are affected with this school specifically. We have associates who have children who go to this school.”

The volunteering at Ketron is a part of the 125th anniversary celebration of Belk. Belk is having a series of events throughout southern states to say thank you to all the customers who have helped them over the last 125 years. The make-overs for schools started on March 10 and will run to July 12.

Wendall Smith, principal of Ketron elementary, was pleased to see the volunteers.

“It’s a great thing for us,” Smith said. “This year will be our second year, so we’re kind of a blank canvas when it comes to creating presentations for the school and making it look aesthetically better.”

Belk teamed up with Hands On Nashville for the Kingsport project. Hands On is a national organization that helps recruit, educate and coordinates a network of volunteers. This is the first time Hands On has worked in the Northeast Tennessee area.

“We contract and work with corporations that want to coordinate corporate service projects,” said Special project coordinator with Hands On Nashville, Alix Brody-Waite. “We are working with Belk to coordinate projects in Mississippi, Arkansas, Tennessee and Kentucky.”

Along with volunteering at the school, Belk employees also did a book drive in which they collected around 740 books. Brody-Waite said the book donation in Kingsport was the most substantial donation she had seen so far.

The Belk store in Kingsport likes to be involved in the community with food drives or disaster relief, Henry said.

Overall, the employees were happy to volunteer their time to help the school and that Belk was supportive from the beginning.

“We think it’s pretty awesome,” Henry said. “Usually it’s us pulling something together and the fact that Belk has taken on the initiative and given us the resources and time to do that and allowing our associates and asking all of our associates to be a part of the bigger picture, really says a lot for Belk and their involvement in the community... This is the start, I hope, of many more involvements in the community here.”
