Cam Newton clothing line part of Belk's 125th anniversary offerings unveiled this spring | Huntsville Times | Belk, Inc. Modern. Southern. Style. | Scoop.it
At a media celebration event Tuesday morning at Parkway Place, Belk officials announced the new MADE Cam Newton line is part of 125 exclusive products starting to show up on store shelves this spring.
Michele Dickey Portfolio's insight:

http://blog.al.com/breaking/2013/03/cam_newton_clothing_line_part.html

The nearly billboard sized photo of Cam Newton smiling at shoppers on the Belk escalator gave away part of the store's announcement on how it will celebrate its 125th anniversary this year.

Though the anniversary of the first store's opening comes in May, the department store chain has already begun the party by unveiling new, exclusive anniversary lines as well as daily prizes ranging from $500 to $6,500.

At a media celebration event Tuesday morning at Parkway Place, Belk officials announced the new MADE Cam Newton line is part of 125 exclusive products starting to show up on store shelves this spring.

Gary Siler, Belk western division vice president and director of stores, said one way Belk plans to incorporate the celebration in a way that builds business is to introduce new product lines from a mixture of known brands such as Ralph Lauren and Sam Edelman and newcomers such as Newton and Birmingham children's clothes designer Andrea Brown.

Brown was one of 15 designer who beat out more than 100 applicants in Belk's inaugural Southern Designer Showcase. Brown's line, Nain & Joe, named for her two children, is on display at one of the Parkway Place store's first floor entrances.

The Newton line was announced last fall at the company's headquarters in Charlotte, N.C., where the Heisman-trophy winner for Auburn now quarterbacks the NFL Carolina Panthers. It first appeared on store shelves about two weeks ago. Belk officials said they are trending toward more private brands with designers and celebrities to differentiate their merchandise in ways competitors can't match.

"One of the ways we'll secure growth is through private brands," Belk President Kathryn Bufano told the Charlotte Observer last fall. She said Belk anticipates exclusive private lines will soon make up more than 30 percent of the company's sales.

The MADE Cam Newton line is not featured yet on Belk's online store. A suit separate coat sells for $82 and chino pants for $42.

Siler also said the anniversary comes at an opportune time when the company has lofty growth plans. Only 10 percent of companies ever reach this age, and more people will be looking to see what make Belk special, he said.

"While our industry is becoming smaller and smaller, we've been able to grow larger and larger," Siler said.

The anniversary events are the products of three years of planning, said Jan Clevenger, chairwoman of Belk's 100-store western division.

In addition to the new product line and sales, Belk is giving away prizes every day for 125 days, which started March 10. On Monday, four $1,000 gift cards were given away at four stores.

Belk, which gave more than $6 million to non-profits last year, will celebrate 125 Days of Service, partnering Belk associates with local schools to bring "Modern. Southern. Style." makeover projects. It will provide $2 million to various Point of Light Foundation projects, but local plans are not finalized for which schools it will include.

Last fall, Belk announced plans for a $20 million "flagship store" to go up at Bridge Street Town Centre. It will be Belk's third flagship store outside its home state of North Carolina. Two more flagship stores are planned for Texas.

Clevenger said she's looking forward to the new store opening in the fall of 2014, and it should greatly expand its market share in the Huntsville area.

The man-made lake at Bridge Street has been drained, and site work has begun. Construction of the 170,000-square-foot building should begin in October, she said.

Belk was first opened May 29, 1888 in Monroe, N.C., by William Henry Belk, grandfather to current chairman Tim Belk and president John R. Belk.

The company has grown into the largest independently owned department store in the United States. It operates 302 stores in 16 states, most of them in the Southeast. It reported $3.78 billion in sales in 2012 and it has set a goal to increase that to $6 billion by 2016.

The company reported a $27.4 million profit in third quarter last year, up nearly 10 percent from the same period last year. The store put more focus to online sales in 2012 and added 150 management-level jobs in IT and e-commerce jobs in December. Online sales increased almost 71 percent in 2012.

Bigger, better Belk planned for Galleria Dallas - Dallas Business Journal

Bigger, better Belk planned for Galleria Dallas - Dallas Business Journal | Belk, Inc. Modern. Southern. Style. | Scoop.it
Just because you may have shopped at a Belk store in McKinney, Rockwall, Weatherford...
Michele Dickey Portfolio's insight:

http://www.bizjournals.com/dallas/blog/2013/03/a-bigger-better-belk-planned-for.html

Just because you may have shopped at a Belk store in McKinney, Rockwall, Weatherford or even Fort Worth doesn't mean you know what Belk is all about, said Jan Clevenger, chairman of Belk's western division.

The flagship location the Charlotte, N.C.-based company plans in the Galleria Dallas will offer more choices, a more upscale merchandise mix and an overall different shopping experience, Clevenger told me in a phone interview Friday from Birmingham, Ala.

"We have smaller stores in the suburbs," she said. "We have been looking for that flagship opportunity in Dallas, and the Galleria is absolutely perfect for us."
The flagship will mean more designer goods, specialty cosmetics and fancier shoes, she said. Belk has 13 smaller stores in Texas but this will be the first flagship store of the region.

Clevenger is clearly excited about expanding in Big D. Having other stores in North Texas has given Belk a taste of what to expect in Dallas, she said.
"Even in McKinney, we kind of get that Dallas customer," Clevenger said.

"She's very contemporary. She's very, very fast when it comes to fashion. She's not very traditional.

"You can take the McKinney store and just explode it at the Galleria. You can just add so much to it."

Belk will take over the 170,000-square-foot space that formerly housed Saks Fifth Avenue at the mall. The store is scheduled to open in the spring of 2014.
Construction on the Belk store will begin in July 2013. The department store, in conjunction with the mall, plans to invest $20 million into improvements to the space.

Belk V.P. Dishes On Dallas Flagship, Cynthia Rowley Collab & More | DFW Style Daily

Belk V.P. Dishes On Dallas Flagship, Cynthia Rowley Collab & More | DFW Style Daily | Belk, Inc. Modern. Southern. Style. | Scoop.it

We chat with Arlene Goldstein, Belk’s Vice President of Trend Merchandising, as the chain's Dallas flagship debut approaches. By Abby Gregory

Michele Dickey Portfolio's insight:

Celebrating 125 years in business in 2013, Belk is enhancing its stylish scope. Not only will the family-owned department store chain launch fresh collection collaborations, but a new flagship is coming to Big D. The venue won’t officially open until Spring 2014, but the company’s plans for the former Saks space at Galleria Dallas are already generating a loud buzz.

Click here to read Galleria Dallas To Lose Saks Fifth Avenue, Gain Belk Flagship

We tapped Arlene Goldstein, Belk’s Vice President of Trend Merchandising, to get the inside scoop on the splashy expansion. With global style credentials that include executive roles for Saks, Inc., and Parisian, Alabama native Goldstein returned to her Southern roots in joining the North Carolina-based team. Today, she’s sharing her perspective on upcoming designer debuts and projects the company has in store for DFW.

DFW Style Daily: Dallas is delighted to welcome Belk’s first Texas-based flagship. Care to dish the details on plans for next spring’s launch?
Arlene Goldstein (pictured above): “We are just now beginning to evaluate the fabulous opportunities in Dallas, and I can tell you that we’ll definitely be focusing on philanthropic collaborations. With our flagship stores, Belk hosts numerous initiatives per season with non-profit organizations. Events like the recent fashion show we did with the Junior League of Raleigh represent a format that works well for us and supports the communities Belk values!”

How did Belk select Galleria Dallas as a marquee location, and how will the company tweak its approach for the local market?
“We always knew we wanted to have a big presence in Dallas, and when the right location came up, we were eager to grab such a perfect opportunity! And though we’re still in the process of merchandising for the store, we’re definitely considering a fantastic, expanded selection of pieces that put the ‘special’ in our special occasion collections.”

As the company celebrates a major milestone this year, what strategic changes are underway for Belk?
“The developments I’m most excited about are the recent launch of CYNTHIA by Cynthia Rowley, and the debut of the 2012 Southern Designer Showcase collections, which were just made available online. Belk will also be a big part of Charleston Fashion Week. I’m honored to serve as a judge, and we’re thrilled that Cynthia will be there as well.
“In addition to events and collaborations, Belk is taking a more aggressive approach to building our social media and online presence as we continue to help fans and followers connect with Belk in a new, more modern way.”

What behind-the-scenes scoop can you share with fans eagerly awaiting the results of the 2013 Southern Designer Showcase in June?
“We’re so excited to begin reviewing the 300-plus amazing applications we’ve received this year. By far, the best part of the entire process is learning what connects the participants to Belk’s Southern footprint. From the special occasion designer who remembered buying his first Boy Scout uniform at Belk, to the girls who recall picking out their prom dresses at our stores, each story is so organic, real, and inspirational.
“My favorite memory thus far was shared by a woman from a tiny town in South Carolina. She and her mother, who recently passed away, had a lifelong tradition of traveling to Belk to choose fabrics for the clothing they made together. When she told us she’d ‘never even dreamed of having the opportunity’ to sell her creations here, there wasn’t a dry eye in the room. Stories like hers are what make the showcase so important, rewarding, and fun!”

Vince Camuto jacket & pant; Anne Klein top & skirt

What unique experiences have had an impact on your career in fashion, and what sentimental, stylish pieces stand out among your wardrobe?
“It’s said that in fashion, we have to look back to look forward. I love things that have a past and a story to tell, like those that belonged to my grandmother. The pieces I have from her – an old brooch, button earrings, a fur-trimmed cardigan – are some of my most prized possessions. Seeing my daughter in her brocade sheath, which fits as if it was made for her, delights me and would’ve brought a mile-wide smile to her face.
“However, my most famous vintage find was discovered at a flea market in Charlotte. I was far beyond the well-appointed booths and well into the ‘third tier’ sheds, when a particular proprietor approached me and said, ‘I think there’s something here for you.’ I was caught off guard, but intrigued, and he dug through a pile of scrap beads and jewels to produce a delicate, silver bracelet with a small heart attached. It was engraved with the words, ‘You hold the key.’ And on the back of the charm, my husband’s initials, M.G. For $5, I found something I’ll always treasure.”

When it comes to your personal aesthetic, what’s your go-to style, and what are you buying this season?
“Because of my hectic travel and work schedules, I rely on staples like LBD’s and great black pencil skirts and slim pants, to which I can easily add fashion elements. Today, for example, I’m wearing a basic LBD and knee-high boots, topped with a military jacket. I often say that the ‘look is in the mix,’ and I encourage adventurous, unpredictable style choices, but done in your own, original way. For spring, pieces like Vince Camuto’s jacquard blazer and pants, and Anne Klein’s peplum shell and skirt in cherry are ideal options for mixing it up.” http://dfwstyledaily.com/2013/03/13/belk-v-p-dishes-on-dallas-flagship-cynthia-rowley-collab-more/

Auburn's Cary Woods Elementary recipient of Belk anniversary service project

Auburn's Cary Woods Elementary recipient of Belk anniversary service project | Belk, Inc. Modern. Southern. Style. | Scoop.it

Cary Woods Elementary School in Auburn was the recipient of a new picnic table, bookcases, books and more from Belk at the Village Mall in Auburn. Belk is celebrating its 125th anniversary with 125 days of service by volunteering at local schools.

Cary Woods Elementary is the first school outside of Belk’s headquarters in Charlotte, N.C., to receive the makeover.

Michele Dickey Portfolio's insight:

Kristen Oliver | Opelika-Auburn News

Cary Woods Elementary School in Auburn was the recipient of a new picnic table, bookcases, books and more from Belk at the Village Mall in Auburn. Belk is celebrating its 125th anniversary with 125 days of service by volunteering at local schools.

Cary Woods Elementary is the first school outside of Belk’s headquarters in Charlotte, N.C., to receive the makeover.

“They’re doing it all over the country, and we’re doing it in Montgomery, Auburn and Prattville,” said Nell Weisenfeld of the HandsOn River Region, an affiliate of the HandsOn Network, a national organization with community chapters that facilitate community service and improvement. Weisenfeld said Belk is organizing similar service projects at about 280 schools in 16 states.

The Auburn event was organized with the help of the HandsOn River Region. Representatives from Belk’s regional offices and the HandsOn Atlanta offices were present to help make the service project work efficiently.

“With this event, the local sales people have their jobs,” Weisenfeld said. “They don’t have much time. It’s taken probably four trips up and back and the supplies were all delivered from Home Depot. Two hours is not much time, but when it’s been all planned by the nonprofit, they don’t leave saying, ‘Oh, I left that half-done.”

Auburn Belk general manager Mark Jenkins brought about 18 employee volunteers for two hours of work at the school. They constructed the picnic table and bookcases and worked on a mural for the school.

“We wanted to do a mural with encouraging words on them,” Jenkins said. “So we came up with the words ‘courage,’ ‘wonderful,’ ‘excellence’ and ‘super,’ which is ‘CWES,’ for Cary Woods Elementary School.

Jenkins said the Auburn Belk also donated nearly 80 brand-new books to the school, and the store employees who couldn’t attend the project made “magic reading carpets” for students.

Jenkins and those present from the HandsOn Network also surprised Cary Woods Elementary School principal Debbie Brooks with a certificate and check for $300 to be used for a school makeover.

Brooks said a music class prepared a performance to thank the volunteers for their service, and students in another class made homemade cards to say thank you.

Jenkins said it was an honor for the Auburn store to be the first store outside of Charlotte to participate in Belk’s service project.

“Being involved in our local communities has been one of this company’s core values since the beginning and an important part of our success throughout our 125 years,” said John R. Belk, the company’s president and CEO, to 700 store managers, district managers and corporation staff at a kickoff event last month. “We are excited to step up that commitment this year and invest our time, talent and resources in local school
