Belk plans 'makeover' for W.A. WrightBy Managing Editor Laurie EverettApr 10, 2013 12:00 amShare on emailShare on facebookShare on twitter More Sharing Services

W.A. Wright Elementary will be the focus of a nationwide initiative by Belk department store in a couple weeks as the recipient of a "makeover" from the nationwide chain.

Over the next 125 days, Belk employees in more than 250 communities across the south will paint classrooms, build bookcases, beautify school grounds, plant school gardens, update playgrounds, create picnic benches and more.

It's part of Belk's 125th anniversary with 125 days of service dedicated to improving conditions at Title 1 schools, which W.A. Wright is categorized.

Jeff Perry manages the Mt. Juliet Belk store at Providence. He said his associates are excited to "makeover" W.A. Wright.

"We are going to build picnic tables, bookcases and draw some murals," he said. "We hope to get 100 percent participation from our store."

Perry said as soon as he put up the sign up sheet, "it quickly filled up."

"Being involved in our local communities has been one of this company's core values since the beginning and an important part of our success throughout our 125 years," said John R. Belk, the company's president and CEO. "We are excited to step up that commitment this year and invest our time, talent and resources to local schools."

Administration at W.A. Wright said they were ecstatic about the project.

"We are so thrilled," said Principal Jill Giles.

Perry said as part of the program, associates at his store are having a book drive for the next two weeks.

"We want to get a minimum of 125 books donated to the school," he said.

If people have books they can drop them off at Belk in Mt. Juliet.

"We are also making magic carpets for the students to sit on while they read," said Perry.

The carpets will be fleece blankets the associates are making now in order to deliver them when they visit the school for the makeover.

Belk's partner in the initiative is Points of Life.

"I think this is so cool," said Perry. "We are so glad to give back to the community."

Belk Charity Sale benefits consumers, nonprofits | Chattanooga Times Free Press

When Chattanooga Belk stores host their semiannual Belk Charity Sale at the end of April, shoppers won’t be the only winners.

Local schools and nonprofits will also reap the discount sale’s rewards.

Michele Dickey Portfolio's insight:

When Chattanooga Belk stores host their semiannual Belk Charity Sale at the end of April, shoppers won’t be the only winners.

Local schools and nonprofits will also reap the discount sale’s rewards.

For Northgate Belk store manager Martin Nobles, the fundraiser is just a part of the store’s mission.

“It’s part of our foundation of our company and we are proud to be able to give back to our communities,” he said of the before-hours in-store sale event. “It’s an ongoing tradition for our store.”

Tickets to the sale are sold by participating nonprofits in advance for $5 a piece. The ticket allows shoppers to enter the store and shop special sale prices from 6-10 a.m. Saturday, April 27.

All ticket proceeds will go to the local charity that sold the tickets.

Money raised by tickets purchased at Belk beginning Friday, April 19 will be divided equally among the participating charities.

“We have a lot of school groups and nonprofits who really rely on this for fundraising,” Nobles said. “Like for school bands, they have to travel for competition and that gets expensive. This is a way to help. This is a big way to raise money.”

By keeping the groups local, Belk also has a way to give back to its associates, many of whom are directly involved with these groups through schools or churches.

In addition to special discounts, the first 100 customers have a chance to receive a Belk gift card, and there will be a $1,000 gift card raffle. Nonprofits and schools will also be given a chance to receive one of three $1,000 Belk donations.

“We’re celebrating our 125th anniversary as a company, an independent retailer,” Nobles added. “What better way than to be able to give back to the communities?”

Last year, Belk stores across the country raised more than $10 million nationally through its charity sale.  http://community.timesfreepress.com/news/2013/apr/10/belk-charity-sale-benefits-consumers-nonprofits/

Belk Celebrates 125 Years of Retail and Service | Jackson

I had the opportunity to speak to Jan Clevenger, Belk's Chairman of the Western division recently as a part of the kickoff of the retailer's 125th anniversary activities. Clevenger is an Alabama Retail Association Silver Retailer award recipient. The kickoff started with a media breakfast on March 27th at Belk's Ridgeland Northpark Mall location where the company's charitable projects were rolled out.

Heisman Trophy winner Cam Newton talks about his new @Belk clothing line (photos) | Belk, Inc. Modern. Southern. Style. | Scoop.it
Cam Newton's clothing line includes men’s sportswear and suits. According to Belk, complete suits are $500, while separates range from $80-$240 (ties are $50). T-shirts are $28-$32, with polos between $40-$45 and long-sleeve shirts from $60-$65.
Michele Dickey Portfolio's insight:

http://www.al.com/entertainment/index.ssf/2013/04/heisman_trophy_winner_cam_newt.html ;

Cam Newton certainly has a flair on the football field.

The quarterback won the Heisman Trophy in 2010 while leading the Auburn Tigers to a national championship, and he now plays for the NFL’s Carolina Panthers.

These days, though, the athlete is showing flair of a different kind. He’s the man behind MADE Cam Newton, a new clothing line at Belk.

“I think from a young age, I’ve always had an interest in fashion,” says Newton, 23. “This won’t be a surprise to my family and friends. The surprise will be pictures of me up in Belk without carrying a football. That will be weird.”

The clothing line includes men’s sportswear and suits. According to Belk, complete suits are $500, while separates range from $80-$240 (ties are $50). T-shirts are $28-$32, with polos between $40-$45 and long-sleeve shirts from $60-$65. Shorts start at $50, pants at $60 and jackets at $120.

For Newton, the variety of clothing in the collection was key.

“I like the mix and match mentality,” he says. “And the ability not just to buy a brand-new this or that. This gives the consumer options that if I have a pair of pants already that I really like, I can buy a polo shirt to go with them. If I’m going to a gathering or a dinner, I can go get a sports jacket.”

Newton didn’t just lend his name to the collection. He watched his ideas come to life.

“It was exciting for me to sit down and see the designs that I mentioned coming to fruition,” he says.

Newton wanted bigger men to feel comfortable in his clothes.

“Oftentimes, for a clothing line, it’s hard for a man with a big stature to look comfortable without spending a lot of money,” he says. “When you get pants or a jacket from MADE, it’s going to feel comfortable.”

Newton thinks his fashion sense was formed at a very young age.

“I think it came from me being young, growing up in Atlanta,” he says. “Every Sunday, we had to dress our best, not just wear gym shorts and sandals to church. I think it started then, and as I got older, I went to banquets and different functions in dress clothes. I felt comfortable in them.”

On this particular day, Newton is wearing sweats as he attends classes at Auburn, finishing one more semester to get his degree in sociology.

But he’ll definitely be wearing MADE clothes when he can.

“Absolutely,” Newton says. “I think I’d be a fool not to. It’s not a requirement for me to wear my own clothes, but I want to wear them. They’re very comfortable. Just try it. That’s my challenge to people.”

Belk department stores are celebrating 125 years of shopping by giving back to their communities.

Wednesday morning, Belk kicked off its campaign in Tennessee of 125 Days of Giving. Each Belk store has partnered with a local elementary school.

The Belk at West Town Mall will collect books and has plans to build bookshelves and help out where needed at West Haven Elementary School.

Belk says a big part of the family-owned company is philanthropy, and they hope shoppers see how much they want to give back to the communities who support them.

"To me it sounds like loyalty. I can stand behind that company, they will deliver on products and service and I can count on them. So, I think it's sort of a reputation, but it brings loyalty I think," said Regional Vice President Dixie Minatra.

Michele Dickey Portfolio's insight:

There are many ways I could lead into this, but why make you wait? SCDD already told you Cam Newton was launching a menswear line with Belk, and very recently I had a quick chat with him about the collection.

The Carolina Panthers quarterback, number one draft pick, former Auburn standout, Heisman winner, GQ cover model and philanthropist has added yet another title to his resume: fashion designer. Newton presents MADE Cam Newton to suit the modern, Southern style for which our region is known – although in his words, the man who wears MADE can be found anywhere. The line features sophisticated but affordable and versatile pieces which can be mixed, matched and easily incorporated into a one’s professional and casual wardrobe. Newton was gracious enough to take time away from his many endeavors (including his studies at Auburn University) to share his views on style and what sets his collection apart.

“I understand the customer because I am a Belk customer – I think that authenticity is going to be paramount to this collection’s success,” says Newton. Confidence and comfort are two hallmarks Newton considers when getting dressed, and those qualities carry over into the collection’s pieces. “If a person is confident there’s no telling what that person is able to do,” he notes.

How did you balance your day job and other commitments with designing MADE? Anything done right will take a person’s time. Belk’s staff did a great job taking my thoughts and vision and bringing it to life. A lot of credit goes to those guys. My job was easy.

Who is the MADE “man” and what sets your collection apart? I think the ‘MADE man’ is a man that is smart. One thing I really wanted to make an impact with was having the ability to mix and match. If you have a shirt and sportcoat you really like, you can buy MADE jeans without having to pay for something top to bottom. It gives the consumer that resource. That’s the fun thing about it.

You’re 6’5. What considerations were made for men who are tall (or who have an athletic build) during the design process? It was something that was part of the focus. I stressed the importance of making clothing a person of that stature will be comfortable wearing. In this day and time, many don’t have the money to buy expensive clothes that would be tailored. I also had in mind it being comfortable for the bigger guy. I think this brand allows those guys to have an outlet to look good as well. [MADE Big & Tall will be sold on belk.com in the near future.]

What should every well-dressed man have in his closet? Different colors. You have different seasons, you have different events; having options is what this brand is about.

How would you define your style? When the opportunity is right I look up to par. From a young age my parents stressed that the first impression is the last impression. In a post-game interview, at a dinner or corporate event I always want to look the part. Not to be the flashiest or flamboyant. I want people to be able to say ‘He looked clean or well put-together.’

How does being a high profile person affect what you wear? Or does it? Nowadays social media gives everybody a voice. That voice is going to be heard. You can be at the gas station or a lounge and a picture can be taken and no matter what you have on, first impressions are the last impression.

We know you design menswear, but what’s the most stylish thing a woman can wear? That would get my attention? I’m into shoes, and I always compliment my mom about the shoes she wears. Any outfit for a female can make one dramatic change or turn heads with her [choice of] shoes.

MADE is available now in Belk department stores and online. I did notice a lot of orange and blue tones, which I’m sure will please Auburn and Carolina fans. Prices range from $28-$65 for casual sportswear and $80-$240 for suiting separates; complete suits are $500. Be on the look-out for the development of an accessories line from the brand in the future, as well as childrenswear. http://samechicdifferentday.com/2013/04/11/cam-newton-talks-made-collection-personal-style/
