How Belk Wooed Birmingham | Business Alabama

How Belk Wooed Birmingham | Business Alabama | Belk, Inc. Modern. Southern. Style. | Scoop.it

Jan Clevenger, Chair Belk Western Division

Panorama Public Relations/Life & Style's insight:

In 1888, William Henry Belk opened his first store in Monroe, N.C., with $750 in savings, a $500 loan, and $3,000 worth of goods taken on consignment. His focus on customer service and offering good prices made his store an instant hit, and it eventually evolved into Belk Inc., the nation’s largest family-owned-and-operated department store company, with revenues of $3.78 billion in 2012, from 301 stores across 16 Southern states, including 22 stores in Alabama.

But Belk’s entrance into Alabama’s biggest city was a challenge. Although Belk had operated smaller stores in more rural areas of Alabama, it had no presence in the state’s major cities until it acquired Parisian in 2006. Founded in Birmingham in 1877, Parisian was beloved in Alabama and a sought-after tenant for upscale retail centers like The Summit in Birmingham and major malls in Huntsville, Montgomery and Tuscaloosa.

When Saks Inc., then-owner of Parisian stores, announced its plan to sell the stores to Belk, many in Alabama were unsure what to expect. Unable to get information about the type of store that would be taking over its anchor space at The Summit, property owner Bayer Properties filed a lawsuit in 2007.

“The covenants associated with the lease at The Summit required the tenant to maintain operations at a certain level, operating as a first-class, fashion department store,” says Jeffrey Bayer, founder and principal of Bayer Properties. “When the acquisition was announced, Belk did not operate what is known as a fashion department store in Alabama, and we couldn’t get anybody at Saks or Belk to answer our questions about their intentions. We felt like we had to protect our asset, so we filed the lawsuit to challenge whether they would adhere to the requirements of the lease.”

In response, Belk executives quickly arrived in Birmingham and met with Bayer. Tim Belk assured Bayer that his company intended to create a first-class fashion department store similar to its flagship store in Charlotte’s SouthPark Mall. “Once they really sat down with us and understood our concerns, they started making commitments about how they would inventory the store to attract the type of shoppers the Summit was meant to attract,” Bayer says.

Not only did Bayer drop the lawsuit, but “we patched up our relationship very early on,” he says. “And we have been more than pleased with Belk. The company is a very honorable, progressive retailer who is all about quality, and they have my highest respect.”

By late 2008, Belk had completed a $13 million renovation to its Summit store, including 50,000 additional square feet, new lighting and signs, and unique visual presentations that show off certain labels. Since then, Belk has made significant investments in its stores in other cities across the state. Currently, the company is developing a new, $20 million, 170,000-square-foot store in Huntsville’s Bridge Street Town Centre, slated to open in late 2014.

Belk offers a private label with upscale flair and regional distinction, says Jan Clevenger, who chairs Belk’s Western Division.
Belk set out to win over Alabama shoppers with remodeled stores and targeted inventory.

“We make moves and try to stay ahead of the trends,” says Jan Clevenger, who chairs Belk’s Western Division, headquartered in Birmingham. “We don’t wait until things go bad and then decide we need to cut expenses. We give everybody a voice, even employees at the lowest levels, and constantly look for ways to be better.”

Clevenger says Belk sets out to develop “fabulous” private brands. Rather than plain and simple, as is often the standard for private-label brands, Belk’s New Directions brand is colorful, profitable and “very Southern,” she says. “A great, growing private brand allows us to offer something special that is different from other stores.”

Belk also partners with leading designers and celebrities to offer exclusive lines. This year, the company’s 125 anniversary, Belk is introducing private labels from Cynthia Rowley and Cam Newton, as well as several new product lines from emerging Southern designers. Winners of Belk’s inaugural Southern Designer Showcase, including Cynthia Rowley, will appear at in-store events and their products will be sold in stores and online at belk.com.

Skillful merchandizing was essential to winning Alabama customers, but almost as important was Belk management’s understanding of the role community contribution plays in cultivating customer loyalty.

Philanthropy has always been a core value of the 125-year-old company, and upon entering Alabama, Belk cemented its place in the community by getting to know the local nonprofits and finding out how to serve them.

“We looked at the relationships that Parisian had in the community and tried to continue those relationships,” says Clevenger. “Not only did we honor those relationships, but we found ways to do even more.”

Belk donates in-kind gifts and lends employees to a variety of causes in Alabama such as the Breast Cancer Research Foundation of Alabama (BCRF), YWCA and Junior League of Birmingham, Huntsville and Mobile. Belk lends its visual team to the YWCA to decorate for its annual Winter Wonderland event, and a group of Belk employees deliver snacks every other week for the children in YWCA’s after-school program.

The BCRF, a nonprofit that raises funds for UAB’s Comprehensive Cancer Center, had long depended on support from Parisian. “When Belk took over, the company sent a team to Birmingham to meet with all the nonprofits that Parisian had supported,” says Dolly O’Neal, BCRF co-founder.

When McKay Belk, then the company’s president and chief merchandising officer, came to tour the Comprehensive Cancer Center, he handed O’Neal his own personal gift to the Foundation, a check for $25,000. “That just cemented what we already knew about the company, that they were strongly committed to doing good in our community,” O’Neal says.

Great Southern Merchandiser Celebrates 125 Years The Old Fashioned Way

This year, Belk is celebrating its 125th anniversary in its traditional manner, with a series of merchandise promotions and community support initiatives.

“It is a very special privilege for Belk to be a part of Southern communities for 125 years, and we don’t take that lightly,” says Johnny Belk, president and chief operating officer of Belk Inc. “We are humbled by that fact and owe our success to the associates who give so much to this company and to our customers. Belk is grounded in the values established by my grandfather, and they are still relevant to our customers today.”

More than 125 exclusive products are available for purchase this year in Belk stores and on belk.com from Belk partners and designers, such as Michael Kors, Ralph Lauren, Jessica Simpson and Sam Edelman. Customers also can register online to participate in 125 Days of Prizes, in which Belk will award a prize valued from $500 to $6,500 every day. The dedicated website for that promotion is belk125prizes.com.

Throughout this year, Belk also is sponsoring community support initiatives. Through a $2 million partnership with the Points of Light Institute, Belk will celebrate 125 Days of Service, and Belk associates will work in local schools to help with makeover projects. The school project, which kicked off in March, will serve 225 schools throughout the Belk footprint.

An investment of over $9 million has produced a 215,000-square-foot multi-level Belk that is designed to help enhance the customer experience.
Panorama Public Relations/Life & Style's insight:

BBJ:How did Belk pull off such a massive transformation without interfering with the customer experience?

Belk Riverchase GM Ken Crow: We call it our remodel phasing basically. What we try to do is balance the construction and also balance the customer service. We added greeters to the store to help give directions. We added extra signage. We tried to make it as customer-friendly as possible, but we also knew we had a nine-month window to get the entire project finished. We stayed on task and did overnights to try to keep the sounds at a minimum for the customers, and we tried to accommodate the construction as much as possible too to see if we could get it all done in nine months.

HOOVER, Alabama -- Belk plans an Oct. 15 grand opening ceremony to showcase its newly-remodeled store at the Riverchase Galleria.

The Charlotte, N.C.-based retailer will unveil the multimillion-dollar renovation project that has been underway for two years.

The 215,000-square-foot store will feature the latest retail design and decor, as well as additional premium brands, the company said today.

New features include redesigned fitting rooms, restrooms and seating areas, while the brands include Marc NY Performance, Christina Bijou bags, The Frye Company, Kate Spade watches and jewelry and Kenneth Cole.

"We are extremely excited to unveil the new Belk at the Galleria, where we will showcase the premium brands that appeal to our customers in a setting that makes them enjoy shopping," Jan Clevenger, chair of the Belk western division, which is based in Birmingham, said in a prepared statement

"We are committed to the Birmingham community and look forward to continuing to bring all the best of modern, southern, style."

In early 2013, Belk executive Johnny Belk talked about the Galleria renovation, saying it would bring the store up to the company's full standard of a flagship location.

The upgrade came amid a major redevelopment of the Galleria, a project that has included improvements to parking decks, restrooms, entrances, landscaping and furnishings.

New retailers also have moved in. For instance, Iowa-based department store Von Maur opened the doors to its new 185,000-square-foot store there last fall.

Belk's Galleria store  also has hired 25 full-time and part-time employees along with 30 seasonal workers.

In conjunction with the grand opening, Belk will donate $65,000 to local charities. The charities include the United Way, Birmingham Children's Theatre, Red Mountain Theatre, Hoover City Schools and the Breast Cancer Research Foundation of Alabama.

The retailer also will give away 400 gift cards at the event, set for 9:30 a.m. on Oct. 15.

Belk operates 300 stores in 16 states.

Elsewhere in Alabama, Belk is opening a new $20 million store in Huntsville, also on Oct. 15.

HOOVER, Alabama -- Belk on Wednesday will officially take the wraps off an extensive renovation of its Riverchase Galleria store.

Improvements included in the multi-million dollar project are an expanded women's shoe department, revamped areas for cosmetics, jewelry and accessories and new designer shops across the 215,000-square-foot store, a flagship location for the Charlotte-based retailer.

Also on Wednesday, Belk will mark the official grand opening of its new $20 million flagship store in Huntsville, at Bridge Street Town Centre.

David Luoma, chair of Belk's Western Division, said the projects reflect the company's commitment to those two markets.

"Obviously we're very optimistic about the business going forward in both of those locations," he said.

Fall is typically is all about rich, jewel and earthy colors, but this year, there’s a mini-trend of muted neutral colors are having a moment. These “dreamy” pale colors — grays, camel, blush, bone, beige, cocoa, pinks, even white — play well with the old fall standbys, says Arlene Goldstein, vice president of trend merchandise and fashion direction for Belk. “Mom always said your shoe should match the hem of your dress, but if you wear a cream shoe with a black dress, you automatically raise the cool quotient by breaking the rules.” USA TODAY’s Maria Puente checks out ways to tone it down for fall.

The makeover of Belk Inc.'s store at the Riverchase Galleria will be complete this fall, but shoppers already are noticing significant changes.

The majority of the work is on the store's first floor, where highlights include an expanded women's shoe department, as well as extensive renovations to the jewelry and cosmetics areas. New lighting and designer shops punctuate the space.

"It's like day and night from before; you will know you're in an entirely new store," said Jan Clevenger, chair of Belk's Western Division, which is based in Birmingham.

The multimillion dollar project, underway for two years, is in various stages of completion. Construction is expected to be complete in late September, and Charlotte, N.C.-based Belk plans an Oct. 15 grand opening ceremony to showcase the remodel.

Elsewhere in the store, there's new paint, carpet and tile on the second floor that gives the area a brighter look. Fitting rooms also were renovated.

The Galleria store already is one of Belk's flagship stores, and it is one of the company's top stores in sales, along with locations at The Summit shopping center in Birmingham and Parkway Place Mall in Huntsville.

But the store was overdue for a facelift, Clevenger said.

It also comes at an opportune time, as the Galleria has gone through a makeover of its own, with improvements throughout the property, the addition of a new Von Maur department store and the rebranding of The Wynfrey Hotel into a Hyatt Regency.

"The Summit has had a remodel and expansion. It's truly a showplace, and this store needed to be as well," Clevenger said of the Galleria locaton. "The mall has done some amazing upgrades, with the hotel and the addition of Von Maur, to deliver a great customer experience."

Elswhere in Alabama, Belk is opening a $20 million flagship store at Bridge Street Town Centre in Huntsville, also on Oct. 15.

The retailer also is doing a small project at its Eastdale Mall store in Montgomery, with improvements to the accessories, shoes and cosmetics departments. That work also will be done by Oct. 15.

Belk, which has about 300 stores in 16 Southern states, reported net sales of $4 billion in fiscal 2014, up 2 percent from the previous year. Same stores sales rose nearly 3 percent.

The company has planned investments of more than $700 million over a three-year period.

Beyond Alabama, projects include those in Texas, Louisiana, Tennessee, North Carolina and South Carolina. The work is a mix of new store openings and expansions and remodels of existing locations, Clevenger said.

"There are a lot of opportunities out there," she said. "We want to keep investing in our current stores, and we're looking for new markets."

Hoover's Riverchase Galleria will be celebrating a familiar face with a new look this fall.

Belk will hold a grand opening ceremony on October 15 on its new flagship store inside the Galleria.

Shoring up its footprint in Alabama's largest mall, Belk will unveil a 215,000 square-foot, multi-level location that has been two years in the making and cost millions to complete.

“We are extremely excited to unveil the new Belk at the Galleria, where we will showcase the premium brands that appeal to our customers in a setting that makes them enjoy shopping,” said Jan Clevenger, chair of Belk's western division.
