The company, founded on this date in 1888, gave the first 100 customers at each of its 301 stores gift cards today.
BIRMINGHAM, Alabama – Belk Inc., the Charlotte-based department store chain that has 22 stores in Alabama, celebrated its 125th anniversary today with dance routines, cupcakes, confetti and gift cards for early-bird customers.
The company, which entered the Birmingham market in 2005 and acquired the city’s much-loved Parisian chain a year later, was founded on May 29, 1888 by William Henry Belk, grandfather of current CEO Tim Belk and President John R. Belk. The chain remains family owned.
Susan Held, general manager of the Belk store at The Summit shopping center, paused while greeting customers this morning and said Belk management had worked hard to earn the loyalty of those who had been lifelong Parisian regulars. Sheila Fountain and Angela Sullivan, who arrived early to make sure they were first in line to enter the Summit store when it opened, said Belk had succeeded.Sheila Fountain, left, and Angela Sullivan wait for the Summit Belk store to open. “I love the merchandise,” Sullivan said. “And if I can get something free, that’s wonderful.”
The first 100 customers at each store were given gift cards with values ranging from $5 to $1,000.
The opening at the Summit store included a dance performance by a group of Spain Park High School students backed by two singers and horn players, streamers fired from confetti cannons and speeches from city leaders. Chuck Faush, chief of staff to Birmingham Mayor William Bell, praised the chain for its charitable endeavors. The company raises millions of dollars for nonprofits with its semi-annual charity sales.
“Belk should be an example for other corporations,” Faush said.
In addition to the gift cards given to customers this morning, customers also can register online to win prizes. The company will give away a prize valued at $500 to $6,500 daily for 125 days. Customers can register on Belk’s Facebook page or the event’s web page.Belk celebrates their 125th anniversaryTRUSSVILLE, Alabama -- Belk store chain celebrates their 125th anniversary with huge sales and gift card giveaways at all of their stores across the country.
