Bird watching along the Mesoamerican Biological Corridor is becoming a fast growing trend, with countries like Belize benefiting from an increase in birders taking advantage of the wealth of avian species thriving in protected areas, according to...
“Belize is definitely birding heaven, with over 308 species recorded in the Chaa Creek nature reserve alone,” Mr Choco said. “Even people not generally interested in birding soon become fans just by walking along the miles of trails and spotting the toucans, parrots, falcons and other birds that make their homes here.

Protected rainforests, Maya ruins, Caribbean beaches and the longest barrier reef in the western hemisphere. Add English as the official language and the widely accepted U.S. dollar, and you can get a great vacation on easy mode in Belize.
The Great Blue Hole is a massive underwater sinkhole that gives divers an almost perfect circle to dive in. The deeper you go, the clearer the water becomes, revealing amazing stalactites and limestone.

The motto on Caye Caulker is “go slow.” This motto is reflected in all aspects of life — from the fact that there are no cars at all on the island (transport is either by golf cart, bike, or on foot) to the speed of service in restaurants. Things just move at a more relaxed pace here; there’s no rush, mostly because there’s really no place better to be. This translates to a very chilled-out vibe that is infectious from the minute you step off the ferry boat.

You know when you riding in a car or train, going along at a pretty good clip, and your eyes just can’t quite move and adjust fast enough to fully bring the world outside the window into focus? When the landscape just kind of flickers and blurs past and you feel like you don’t have enough time to concentrate on any one thing?
That’s kind of how I felt when visiting Flores.

I had a hard time choosing the top photo. Since I love sunsets I really wanted to go with Amanda’s Caye Caulker shot but the colonial style beach home in Placencia stole my heart. I have a house in Cayo, which is in Western Belize but I have yet to own property on the beach – that’s on my bucket list.

This English-speaking country offers a back to basics lifestyle.
As recently as a few years ago, the numbers of foreign retirees living in Belize’s Cayo District numbered only a few dozen. Today, small but ever-expanding communities of expats and retirees seeking a back to basics lifestyle have established themselves in this pristine land of rivers, waterfalls, and rain forest.
Here in the Cayo, colorful flowers and fruit-laden trees bloom year-round, and diverse species of birds are everywhere. In the Cayo you also find well-manicured productive Mennonite farmland. The region is reminiscent of the hills of Pennsylvania. If not for the palm trees, you might not know you were in Belize. The soil in the Cayo is fertile and rich, and the Mennonite farmers who work it produce most of Belize's food supply.

Roni Martinez is conservation officer at Blancaneaux Lodge, a gracious bit of tourism infrastructure in a particularly peculiar part of Belize. Take those pines, for example. Much of this country is clad in broad-leaf rainforest, damp and exotic, full of orchids and bromeliads, strangler figs, vines and creepers. Huge palms stretch upwards. Ferns shoot sail-like fronds up to the canopy. Below all the dripping vegetation lies soft limestone, riddled with caves and cenotes, once thought by the ancient Mayans to be the gateways to the underworld.

Belize and San Pedro have been highlighted in recent news due to John McAfee, the founder of McAfee, Inc. Although, this is the story that has brought Belize to attention of late, this is not what I focused on while I traveled there this past December.
Sometimes, one needs a vacation after going on vacation. Belize, in December, was a perfect blend of adventure and relaxation. I felt refreshed when I arrived back in Seattle, but I was a bit sad to have had to leave. It was a wonderful trip—a reunion with Katie, my sister's wedding, and a Christmas holiday. And, although the world did not end on December 21st, 2012, there was a buzz of excitement to be with the Maya people, sharing their legend with them. And at the end of our voyage, the consensus was that we all want to go back.

How one couple found a retirement spot that suits both of their preferences.
James and Sue were torn. As James prepared to conclude a successful career in the computer industry, the couple faced the big “Where to Retire?” question. James and Sue love the beach and the sea and thought the Caribbean could be their dream retirement location. On the other hand, the couple appreciates the quiet, simple life, and liked the idea of retiring “off-the-grid” in a rural setting. Realizing that the only way to make a decision between these two different lifestyles would be to try them on for size, James and Sue took off for scouting trips in Panama and Mexico, where they looked at both coastal and farm choices. But nothing felt right.
