"Our journey here began when my husband and I had decided to get off the “earn-and-spend” treadmill. Belize offers that—and the chance to teach our four children the value of a simpler life, away from materialism and consumerism." Delete the scoop?

While the decision to relocate to a lush, tropical country may have been an easy choice to make, the process of actually picking the country may be an entirely different story.
Alexia Malo 's insight:

9. Caracol, Cayo District, Belize Once you turn off the main road, it will take you over 2 hours by 4-wheel drive to arrive at Caracol, but VirtualTourist members promise it is worth the trip! Despite being located along the Guatemalan border and about 80 km from the nearest town of San Ignacio, there are 11 causeways into Caracol, signifying the importance of transportation routes throughout the site. Additionally, the excavation data collected in Caracol suggests that the social organization of the settlement included not only elites and specialists living in the urban centres with peasants living on the peripheral, but also a sizable "middle class." There is also evidence of artesian specialization, similar to the guilds found in the European Middle Ages, making this site a very unique find and of great anthropological significance.

Caye Caulker, Belize
The diving: dwarfed only by Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, the Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System lies less than a mile from Caye Caulker. Its countless dive sites house everything from delicate sea fans to majestic coral gardens, but its iconic Great Blue Hole is best left to advanced divers. Why learn here: course fees at this idyllic, low-key Caribbean island are among the highest in Central America, but the diving here is by far the best. Enquire at Frenchies (www.frenchiesdivingbelize.com) and Belize Dive Services (belizedivingservices.net). When to go: diving is year-round, with conditions near perfect around May. During the rainy season from December to April, seas can be choppy. Delete the scoop?

Cayo got a great write up in International Living. Yes, Everyone should visit Cayo, even though the only things we have here are Mayan archaeological sites, rivers, waterfalls, caves, hiking trails, butterfly farms, medicinal trails, ziplines, cenotes, canoe adventures, botanical gardens, granite pools, Lake Benque, ATM, award winning hotels... Photo is from the Black Hole Drop adventure at Caves Branch Lodge.
"If you love lazy rivers, vast rolling hills, and fertile farmland and rainforests where you can test your gardening skills, Cayo is for you. The heart of this area are the twin towns of San Ignacio and Santa Elena, which both enjoy an Old West feel…but in a tropical frontiersman kind of way that you’ll find only in Belize. Bargains can be found here, too—not only on real estate but on the huge amount of produce and fresh cheeses grown and produced here by local Mennonites."

This is a great fan video about the Belize Zoo.
"The Best Little Zoo in the World,The Belize zoo is a great adventure. If you can only do one thing while you are in Belize then go to the Belize zoo. The animals in the Belize zoo are rescued or hurt not captured for display. The Belize zoo needs our help to continue its work saving and rehabilitating animals and birds. Please look them up on their Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/BzeZoo?fref=ts or at their website http://www.belizezoo.org/
Make sure you check out this cool little place, if you have kids and you want an adventure for them then bring them here and let the jaguar lick their forehead.. it is really cool. When we go back to Belize next year we will return the the Belize zoo again it's so worth while."

“The magnificent, historical and ancient discovery in Paynes Creek National Park was made by a team of archaeologists led by Doctor Heather McKillop. For those at the location it was surely a Joyful, a touching and historical experience as the remains of the Maya wooden canoe was carefully floated for a short while to the surface of the sea level.
It can be recalled that in the same Paynes Creek National Park in 1994 Doctor Heather McKillop and her archaeological team made the historical discovery of the ancient Maya wooden canoe paddle which was exported under temporary license from Belize for conservation and will be returned and officially handed over to the relevant authority in Belize this year. A life-size replica of that paddle in now on permanent display at the Tourist Information Center in Punta Gorda where Belizeans and visitors can view it free of cost.
A historical and ancient Mayan Canoe was discovered in the Toledo District.

Cayo's Crystal Cave, also known as Mountain Cow Cave, had a great article written about it lately. Great way to put it: Actun Tunichil Muknal is for tourists, Mountain Cow is for adventurers. Both are great ways to spend the day.
"I said it before, but I'll say it again: ATM is for tourists, Crystal is for adventurers. Crystal is different. It was a challenge the memory of which still gets my blood pumping. It is impossible to overstate how incredibly breathtaking it is. It was one of the most exciting and intimate ways I have ever experienced the earth. I will never forget it."
