12 Mistakes Nearly Everyone Who Writes About Grammar Mistakes Makes

12 Mistakes Nearly Everyone Who Writes About Grammar Mistakes Makes | Writing Online | Scoop.it

"There are a lot of bad grammar posts in the world. These days, anyone with a blog and a bunch of pet peeves can crank out a click-bait listicle of supposed grammar errors. ... Inspired by a recent post titled “Grammar Police: Twelve Mistakes Nearly Everyone Makes”, I decided to make a list of my own."

Deanya Lattimore Schempp's insight:

I have a new favorite website: Arrant Pedantry.  This list of "12 Mistakes" that writing teachers make when talking to students should be posted on writing teacher's foreheads, so that students can see them, like you do when you play that kind of card game where everyone can see your cards except you.

The Maker Movement and the Rebirth of Constructionism - Hybrid Pedagogy

The Maker Movement and the Rebirth of Constructionism - Hybrid Pedagogy | Writing Online | Scoop.it
The culmination of my quest for more powerful learning grounded in theory and research came when recently I conducted an experiment in pushing constructionism into the digital age.

Constructionism is based on two types of construction. First, it asserts that learning is an active process, in which people actively construct knowledge from their experience in the world. People don’t get ideas; they make them. This aspect of construction comes from the constructivist theory of knowledge development by Jean Piaget. To Piaget’s concept, Papert added another type of construction, arguing that people construct new knowledge with particular effectiveness when they are engaged in constructing personally meaningful products.

Imagine my surprise and joy when I realized that I had arrived at constructionism prior to knowing that such a theory even existed. I believe that thousands of other educators are unknowingly working within the constructionist paradigm as well. Although many within the Maker movement are aware that it has it’s roots in constructionism, the movement is gaining impressive momentum without the majority of Makers realizing that there is a strong theoretical foundation behind their work.

After I came to understand this connection between my practices and the supporting theoretical framework I was better able to focus and refine my practice. Even more importantly, I felt more confident and powerful in forging ahead with further experiments in the learning situations I design for my learners.

[1309.2402] Anger is More Influential Than Joy: Sentiment Correlation in Weibo

[1309.2402] Anger is More Influential Than Joy: Sentiment Correlation in Weibo | Writing Online | Scoop.it

from Cornell University Library's Open Access Journals.

Deanya Lattimore Schempp's insight:

Knock off the folder names to get to the root directory of Cornell's "e-prints" directory by subject.

Researchers Rui Fan, Jichang Zhao, Yan Chen, and Ke Xu  say that

Recent years have witnessed the tremendous growth of the online social media. In China, Weibo, a Twitter-like service, has attracted more than 500 million users in less than four years. Connected by online social ties, different users influence each other emotionally. We find the correlation of anger among users is significantly higher than that of joy, which indicates that angry emotion could spread more quickly and broadly in the network. While the correlation of sadness is surprisingly low and highly fluctuated. Moreover, there is a stronger sentiment correlation between a pair of users if they share more interactions. And users with larger number of friends posses more significant sentiment influence to their neighborhoods. Our findings could provide insights for modeling sentiment influence and propagation in online social networks.

Rhetoric and Composition’s Dead

Rhetoric and Composition’s Dead | Writing Online | Scoop.it

From Ann Larson's blog, Education, Class, Politics.

"There is a growing online literature, by those with no access to the traditional academic forums, that tells the stories of former academics and graduate students being forced out of their jobs. Some decide they no longer want academic careers, but most report being unable to support themselves in the low-wage hellscape that some still call “higher education.” The last few years have also seen rising anger and frustration from students and families who are paying an ever higher price for college at the same time that, for most students, a four-year degree is more likely to lead to a lifetime of debt than to a higher wage job."
Deanya Lattimore Schempp's insight:

Reading it now, so can't yet comment.  Is there a "call to action" section?  That seems to be the most compelling comment.
