BMW Vs. Tesla: A Real Live Innovator’s Dilemma | TechCrunch

BMW Vs. Tesla: A Real Live Innovator’s Dilemma | TechCrunch | Being Smart | Scoop.it
Elon Musk has defined the standard for a future mass-produced electric car – it must cost around $40,000, have a range of 200 miles, and be comparable to a..
Peter Feltham's insight:

This article makes some interesting points in places, but is slightly an "apples and oranges" comparison.

In today's world,  BMW's i3 is a very interesting vehicle. For those with low daily miles for commuting or local running, it's a beautifully designed and clever solution, and the basic i3 model serves well. I know several people looking at it just for that purpose.

The i3 could even serve as the sole car for those wishing to run it in its REX version, because this eliminates any "range anxiety" issues via the small petrol engine.

It's expensive - but that's yet another benefit of the brand.

I' recently test drove the Tesla Model S85+ Sport. It's a phenomenal vehicle in many subtle ways with excellent steering and brake feel. Very clever, and world class. The Tesla people I've interacted with are also top quality - a factor not to be underestimated in the high end automotive market sector. Bravo!

What Apple Has Planned For Your Car

What Apple Has Planned For Your Car | Being Smart | Scoop.it
By Aaron Crowe
Apple has taken over your home and portable devices - half of all American households own an Apple product - and now the company is aiming at your car.
Peter Feltham's insight:

Many manufacturers will have more or less integration with iOS devices before long, - and Android too. It's an inevitable consequence of the penetration of SmartPhones to become ubiquitous cultural objects.
The real benefits will accrue when specific Apps to perform useful tasks for the consumer are added to this infrastructure.
We're working on it.. ;)

Smart cities are here today -- and getting smarter | ComputerWorld.com

Smart cities are here today -- and getting smarter | ComputerWorld.com | Being Smart | Scoop.it

Smart cities aren't a science fiction, far-off-in-the-future concept. They're here today, with municipal governments already using technologies that include wireless networks, big data/analytics, mobile applications, Web portals, social media, sensors/tracking products and other tools.

These smart city efforts have lofty goals: Enhancing the quality of life for citizens, improving government processes and reducing energy consumption, among others. Indeed, cities are already seeing some tangible benefits.

But creating a smart city comes with daunting challenges, including the need to provide effective data security and privacy, and to ensure that myriad departments work in harmony.

What makes a city smart? As with any buzz term, the definition varies. But in general, it refers to using information and communications technologies to deliver sustainable economic development and a higher quality of life, while engaging citizens and effectively managing natural resources.

Making cities smarter will become increasingly important. For the first time ever, the majority of the world's population resides in a city, and this proportion continues to grow, according to the World Health Organization, the coordinating authority for health within the United Nations.

A hundred years ago, two out of every 10 people lived in an urban area, the organization says. As recently as 1990, less than 40% of the global population lived in a city -- but by 2010 more than half of all people lived in an urban area. By 2050, the proportion of city dwellers is expected to rise to 70%.

As many city populations continue to grow, here's what five U.S. cities are doing to help manage it all:

Toyota Doing Connected Car Different with a Dockable Nexus 7

Toyota Doing Connected Car Different with a Dockable Nexus 7 | Being Smart | Scoop.it
Everyone wants a connected car, but the truth is that the technology in your in vehicle infotainment system will be outdated well before you're ready to trade your car in for a new model.
Peter Feltham's insight:

Good point. The user is more likely to be up to ate with the latest SmartPhone technology than the car, unless the car's systems can be upgraded during their life time.
I recently test drove a Tesla Model S85+. It's built-in hotspot ran at 3G, but my own devices run off 4G. Tesla told me that the car can be set up to use my own devices 4G by setting them up as a local hotspot, which is a good way around the issue methinks.

Peter Feltham's insight:

This is both a massive trend, and something that will impact on ordinary consumers sooner rather than later.

Cisco's network expertise is a key asset here: they understand the concepts and technologies that enable the "mesh networks" required. And it is those that enable communications vehicle-to-vehicle [eg there's an accident around the blind bend - prepare to top!" and vehicle-to-environment.
