The frantic voice on phone belonged to my dear friend Carrie. “Emmy’s gone and we can’t find her anywhere!” Oh no! Emmy was a tiny, beautiful and beloved Shih-Tzu. She had just participated in Carrie’s wedding the day before, walking down the aisle with the flower girls. (Emmy was not going on the honeymoon but was going to be looked after by her brother who lives with Carrie.) “What happened?”

Donors to Boggs Mountain Humane Shelter’s “Lucky Dog” program were shocked to learn that the dogs they sponsored in order to be adopted were in fact, euthanized. The northern Georgia shelter took in strays and owner surrenders and claimed to be no kill. The “Lucky Dog” program was a brilliantly simple scam. Good-hearted animal lovers gave the shelter $100 to sponsor a dog’s vaccinations, worming, spay/neuter and vet exam. Donors received a photo of their Lucky Dog, and a cheerful email when he was adopted.

Dating is all about compromise. But one thing no one should have to sacrifice while they're dating is the love they have for their pets. Whether the person you’re looking for has a pet or they don’t, if someone you’re dating (or even just thinking of dating) doesn’t like your pet, that could very well be a deal-breaker.

When you’re a single “parent” to a dog or cat and you get sick, you worry — just as single parents of human babies worry — who will take care of the kids. That’s why the Orlando nonprofit Paws Care exists. Founded in April 2010, the organization helps people affected by HIV/AIDS, cancer and other serious illnesses with their pet care needs, allowing them to keep their furry family members at a time when that companionship may be needed most.

I have friends on both sides of the parenting spectrum. Some won't let me in the door without slathering my hands in antibacterial gel, while others are okay with their kids teething on my dogs' Kongs.

Experts say many children who enter the first grade can play video games but few have a pet to play with. And teachers say that's a shame, considering how animals - real ones - can enrich a child's upbringing.

My dog's first taste of beer came at an early age. Ever the curious puppy, she knocked over a can of Pabst Blue Ribbon at a kickball game and took a few cautious licks of the golden stuff that beaded up on some blades of grass. We snatched her away from the growing puddle, but those few drops of Wisconsin goodness stayed with her. To this day, whenever someone pops a can of PBR, her puppy sense begins to tingle and she wanders over for a sniff.

“It’s better to hop on three legs than to limp on four.” Jim and Rene’ Agredano faced that choice when their dog Jerry was diagnosed with cancer and would require one of his legs be amputated. They found lots of information about the cancer, etc. But, what they didn’t find was any type of support community for the pet parents who are going thru this with their dogs.
