Bullying causes significant emotional and physical consequences for children with autism

Bullying causes significant emotional and physical consequences for children with autism | BED 403 - Bullying | Scoop.it

Nearly 70 percent of children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) experience emotional trauma as a result of being bullied, according to findings published in the Journal of Developmental & Behavioral Pediatrics, while a significant portion were concerned for their own safety at school. The study also found that children with ASD who presented with pre-existing psychiatric diagnoses were at increased risk for involvement in bullying, with children diagnosed with ASD and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or depression at highest risk of being victimised over a one month period. This study was led by researchers from the Interactive Autism Network, a project of the Kennedy Krieger Institute that is the nation’s first online autism registry with participants from 47 states, making it the largest collection of autism data in the world.

The "Empathise Project" is an interesting way to assist children with violence and bullying. There are many different techniques and this one includes getting the children to have 27 sessions with Zoe to get the children to empathise, think and observe why Zoe does what she does.

9yro Boy Bullied For “Being White” Commits Suicide

9yro Boy Bullied For “Being White” Commits Suicide | BED 403 - Bullying | Scoop.it

A  9-year-old boy’s dead body was found by his parents after he committed suicide in February.

The young boy, Aaron Dugmore, was bullied by an Asian gang at school for a long period of time — the bullying got so bad, that the 9-year-old eventually took his own life.

Kelly-Marie Dugmore, Aaron’s mother, said that she complained to the school, England’s Erdington Hall Primary School, about the bullying several times (before her son committed suicide), but nothing was done to stop it.

Kelly-Marie said, “Aaron got on with all the children at his last school, and for him to have been bullied because of the color of his skin makes me feel sick to my stomach.”

The bullying got so severe that Aaron would hide, all alone, during recess, so that the aggressors would not find him.

Kelly-Marie alleges that one of the students in the gang told him that “all white people should die. Another took a plastic knife, threatened Aaron with it, and told him that it would be a real knife next time.

Bullying, Anti-bullying Legislation, and School Safety

Bullying, Anti-bullying Legislation, and School Safety | BED 403 - Bullying | Scoop.it

Firm, fair, and consistent enforcement of school discipline policies, meaningful school climate strategies which include anti-bullying initiatives, and balanced security measures can lead to school climates with less bullying and fewer safety threats to children.
Anti-bullying legislation, typically an unfunded mandate requiring schools to have anti-bullying policies but providing no financial resources to improve school climate and security, offer more political hype than substance for helping school administrators address the problem. Bullying is a social justice issue. It lowers the victim's self-esteem and impacts them physically, mentally, and emotionally. Bullying is most common when someone is of a different race or has a lower class. We have to help and take a stand.
