Typography:

One skill that a good graphic designer needs is typography, while many people overlook this skill, it can be the key thing that can get you a job at a advertising firm. This can be the difference between looking like an amateur and looking like a professional graphic designer. To understand typography, you need to have a firm understanding of font families, tracking, kerning and what is appropriate use of line-height. Because the advertising industry is mostly about communication and communicating to people a message, it needs good typography.

Photography

To be looked upon as being a well-rounded graphic designer, you’ll need to be able to take a good picture. If you happen to work somewhere where you can get your hands on a camera, use it. A camera that can provide enough light to illuminate the subject, such as using a flash on a camera.

Also, a camera you would want to use is one that takes good looking pictures, so you need one that provides good pixel resolution so your picture doesn’t come out blurry. A general rule of thumb for most designers and photographers is anything below 6 megapixels shouldn’t be used as it produces low quality pictures.
