Tortola, British Virgin Islands
Photograph by Matt Propert, National Geographic

Boats and birds bob in peaceful Cane Garden Bay on Tortola in the British Virgin Islands. Tortola was named for its turtledoves, which still outnumber the island's inhabitants. Tortola is the largest island in the British Virgin Islands, and Cane Garden Bay is its standout beach, popular with windsurfers, water-skiers, and boaters.

10 things I bet you didn't know about Curaçao

10 things I bet you didn't know about Curaçao | Beach Maniac | Scoop.it
Today you can cross the Emma bridge as many times as you like on foot, but until 1934, anyone who was wearing shoes had to pay toll (2 cents). As a result, wealthy people took off their shoes to avoid having to pay, and poor people who couldn’t afford shoes borrowed a pair from the rich and paid the 2 cents to cross the bridge, to maintain a sense of pride.

American Classic: Coronado Island

American Classic: Coronado Island | Beach Maniac | Scoop.it
In 1888, two things I love were born: the National Geographic Society (obvious bias here) and the Hotel del Coronado. I realized the coincidence as I stood in the Del's wood-paneled lobby, where, on the surface, little appears to have changed in the past 126 years except for the attire of the crowds passing through. But this American classic isn’t frozen in time.

Beach Maniac's insight:

Jason Schneider's curator insight, February 3, 2015 3:17 PM

The Caribbean area is one of the most hottest areas to visit during the winter. That's because during the winter time, the earth is tilted where Canada and the northern United States is further away from the sun and the Caribbean Islands and South America is closer to the sun so it gets more heat. Also, because the sand in the Caribbean Islands and southern United States are so white is because they get more sun rays directed onto the sand and it causes them to reflect and sparkle.
