Young people are warned they may lose control over their images and videos once they are uploaded online - Internet Watch Foundation | Be e-Safe | Scoop.it

Anonymous extracts from young people asking to do something about their online images and videos:
“One explicit image I took when I was young but I cannot be specific to if I was 15 or 16 because it was long ago, and I never posted it to the internet…It is coming up on the first page of [search engine] also if my name is searched and on [search engine] images for my name which could jeopardize any future career I have or if any family/friends come across it.”

“ I  came to regret posting photographs of myself naively on the internet and tried to forget about it, but strangers recognized me from the photographs and made lewd remarks at school. I endured so much bullying because of this photograph and the others...I was eventually admitted for severe depression and was treated for a suicide attempt.”

Beware of Ask.fm

Beware of Ask.fm | Be e-Safe | Scoop.it
I wanted to write this post to let parents know that there is a potentially dangerous website that is becoming very popular with teenagers at the moment.

From looking at this website, I’m shocked at the very public conversations that are happening in this forum. I’ve seen conversations where ‘people’ are anonymously telling a 13 year old girl to die as she’s not pretty enough or telling a 14 year old boy to kill himself as he’s gay.

I think as parents we need to be vigilant about cyberbullying and make sure that our kids aren’t using this website.

Anti-Bullying Programs Miss the Target

Anti-Bullying Programs Miss the Target | Be e-Safe | Scoop.it

TEDx speaker Mike Langdon tells us in just under 19 minutes why anti-bullying programs miss the target.

1) Definition. As a society, we don’t agree on one definition of bullying. When Langdon asked 300 sixth graders to define bullying, they came up with 89 different definitions. And this isn’t just children, adults, even school districts, are guilty of wavering between different definitions of bullying.

2) The term bullying is negative. By encouraging students to talk about this negative issue, we are help children understand what’s wrong, but not what’s right.  What is the opposite of bullying? Do our children know how to act this way? We cannot expect students to be kind, loving and act with empathy if we don’t teach them to understand and practice these skills.

3) The word bully is a label that stigmatizes children. When adults and children call others bully, this creates a stigma for that child that travels with her/him wherever they go. Bullying behaviors usually occur when children are discovering how to act in social situations. If these students are identified as bully, s/he are not being given the opportunity to learn pro-social skills. We must give children a chance to learn teamwork, empathy and kindness.

Protect your Personal Information When Gaming

Protect your Personal Information When Gaming | Be e-Safe | Scoop.it

Offenders look for kids where they hang out.  Since gaming consoles (like X-Box) are about as common for kids as Facebook, offenders spend a lot of time there.  Because they play a lot of games, they also become very good players.

None of this may seem like a big deal if your son doesn’t do anything other than play a game.  The problem is that it’s easy for someone to establish a “friendship” based solely on a game.  When you have a common bond (gaming), the usual barriers for a predator are easily avoided.  The longer a kid plays, and the more he talks with others, the greater the chance for him to share personal things about himself.

These gaming conversations, which may seem like no big deal to a teen, could be just the connection the offender is looking for.  While playing the game, the first question could be “where are you?”  Because you don’t know this guy and you’re careful about personal details, the answer is usually very general—I live in whatever city.  But as they play over a long period of time, it becomes much easier to add things like the school you attend.  As that information begins to flow, real names get added.  For teens, time seems to equal friendship, so what’s the big deal in telling your new “buddy” your real name.

We plan to make it available as a printed resource and a comic book style summary of key advice for young people; but first we are launching it as a downloadable online resource.

The resource covers topics such as -

What is sexting?

Can it happen accidentally?

Trust and friendship - considering what is appropriate to share and with whom

How images or videos can be shared online and what websites they might end up on

What are the first things to do

Will you get into trouble

How to ask your parents for help

Will this affect your online reputation and your future

What can Creative Commons do for me?

What can Creative Commons do for me? | Be e-Safe | Scoop.it
What is Creative Commons?

Creative Commons helps you share your knowledge and creativity with the world.

Creative Commons develops, supports, and stewards legal and technical
infrastructure that maximizes digital creativity, sharing, and
innovation.

What can Creative Commons do for me?

If you want to give people the right to share, use, and even build upon a work you’ve created, you should consider publishing it under a Creative Commons license. CC gives you flexibility (for example, you can choose to allow only non-commercial uses) and protects the people who use your work, so they don’t have to worry about copyright infringement, as long as they abide by the conditions you have specified.

If you’re looking for content that you can freely and legally use, there is a giant pool of CC-licensed creativity available to you. There are hundreds of millions of works — from songs and videos to scientific and academic material — available to the public for free and legal use under the terms of our copyright licenses, with more being contributed every day.

If you would like to see what kinds of companies and organizations are using Creative Commons licenses, visit our Who Uses CC? page.

"Education is the way to reduce cyber risks"

"Education is the way to reduce cyber risks" | Be e-Safe | Scoop.it

October is the European Cyber Security Month. The goal is to raise awareness about cyber risks.

What are the main cyber risks for children?

The main cyber risks for children are probably cyber bullying and sexual solicitation. T

Are these risks different from real-life dangers?

I think it’s hard to tell. I think the only that does seem to be different measurably is cyber bullying because it can be much more intrusive and you just can’t get away from it.

Is technical control effective to avoid those risks?

No, I don’t think it is. I think that education is the way you reduce risks. If you just control things for people, then they don’t come to evaluate the risks themselves.

 . ..........  ....

How can you educate children to avoid cyber risks?

The best way is to give them strategies to deal with problems that arise. I remember the case of a primary school, with children from 7 to 10 years old, and the school didn’t particularly have filters on but they just sat with the kids and encouraged them to report when there was a problem and to tell them what to do about it. So the best way is to treat them as intelligent creatures and let them maketheir own choices, also to encourage them to seek support from their peers. We have to encourage them to be self-sufficient.

Do you think about a specific methodology?

It should be a continuous effort. It’s about how you deal with life generally, how you deal with strangers, how you deal with the danger when you walk down the street, the general politenesses of life. We try and encourage them to grow up and make their own decisions and to be responsible citizens. We should transfer that learning to their dealings with the internet.
