How to Teach Digital Citizenship in Kindergarten

How to Teach Digital Citizenship in Kindergarten | Be e-Safe | Scoop.it

As soon as children begin to visit the online world, they need the knowledge to do that safely, securely, responsibly.

There are several great programs available to guide students through this process (Common Sense’s Digital Passport, Carnegie CyberAcademy, Netsmart Kids). I’ve collected them as resources and developed a path to follow that includes the best of everything.

Here’s Kindergarten:

Overview/Big Ideas

Students learn how to live in the digital world of internet websites, copy-righted images, and virtual friends who may be something different.

Essential Questions What is a ‘digital citizen’? How is being a citizen of the internet the same/different than my home town? What are the implications of digital citizenship in today’s world?

Objectives and Steps

The objectives of this lesson are:

Understand that computers can be used to visit far-away places and learn new things. Understand that staying safe online is similar to staying safe in the real world. Describe how to travel safely on the internet.

Positive and Safe Internet Sites

Positive and Safe Internet Sites | Be e-Safe | Scoop.it

The internet is a wonderful learning resource packed with fascinating and informative information, games and websites.

.Here, Webwise lists some of our favourite picks as approved and reviewed by Irish teachers.

National Geographic Kids

This inspiring website’s mission is to get children to care about the planet - and the people, places and animals in it.

It is a website jam-packed with games, videos and photos from all over the world (and across the galaxy!).

Maths is Fun

The idea behind the site is to offer mathematics as well as some fun bits, and to combine the two wherever possible.

The main content of the site is aimed at infants up to Junior Cert.

It is full of puzzles and quizzes to stretch even the most mathematical of minds.

San Francisco Symphony - Kids' Site

This highly interactive site teaches the instruments of the orchestra, the basics of reading music, and has an online radio to listen to some classical music's greatest hits.

It allows children to experiment with music and become a composer.

It’s suitable for primary school and early secondary school classes.

The Literacy Centre

The Literacy Centre Education Network is a non-profit organisation that delivers free, professionally-designed education material to preschool-age children.

Basically, it provides online literacy and numeracy lessons for young children.

20 Coolest Augmented Reality Experiments in Education So Far

20 Coolest Augmented Reality Experiments in Education So Far | Be e-Safe | Scoop.it
More and more teachers, researchers, and developers contribute their ideas and inventions toward the cause of more interactive learning environments.

Augmented reality is exactly what the name implies — a medium through which the known world fuses with current technology to create a uniquely blended interactive experience.

While still more or less a nascent entity in the frequently Luddite education industry, more and more teachers, researchers, and developers contribute their ideas and inventions towards the cause of more interactive learning environments. Many of these result in some of the most creative, engaging experiences imaginable, and as adherence grows, so too will students of all ages

what happens to your personal data when you enter it online to book a flight?

what happens to your personal data when you enter it online to book a flight? | Be e-Safe | Scoop.it

Or what happens to your pictures after you delete them from a social networking site? Do you know who you can turn to if your data has been stolen or misused?

Across Europe citizens are increasingly concerned about what happens to their personal data.

In Ireland 65% of social network users and 76% of online shoppers say they do not feel in complete control of their data.

With social networking sites, cloud computing, location-based services, and smart cards, we leave digital traces, details of our life, with every move we make. In this brave new digital world we need a robust set of rules.

Ireland has had legislation protecting citizens’ personal data in place since 1988 which was further updated in 2003 resulting from common European rules introduced in 1995.

But these were pre-internet times: In 1995 only 1% of Europe’s population was using the internet.

To protect personal data more effectively, in January the European Commission proposed an overhaul of the EU data protection rules.

So, as a parent or teacher, you would like to know the best, and safest, sites to recommend to your children or students.

BYOD/BYOT: Bring Your Own Device/Technology. .. example from Dublin | Be e-Safe | Scoop.it

I taught my first class in Portmarnock Community School today using BYOD, asking a first-year class of students (aged about 13) to bring a phone, camera, iTouch or similar device to school.

Out of thirty, about fifteen brought in a device.

The subject in question was Information and Communications Technology and the class was one hour and ten minutes in length, a "double" in the parlance of Irish secondary schools.

The class took place in a computer room with thirty functioning PCs. ...

Seven Tips to Keep You Safe Online

Seven Tips to Keep You Safe Online | Be e-Safe | Scoop.it

1. Password safety!: Create a complex and unique password for your social network. Don’t share it with anyone.

2. Private matters: Take the steps to look at your social network account’s privacy settings. Start out by selecting the greatest control, and limit access to your profile, photos, videos, and postings to Friends only.

3. Choose Applications carefully: Each application (games, surveys, quizzes and contests) is made differently but all get some level of access to your private information. Read the agreement before clicking “Accept”.

4. Beware Unknown Links: There has been a big increase in dangerous phishing efforts through social networks using malicious techniques like click-jacking.

5. Select Your Friends Carefully: On a social network, your friends’ list is your most valuable asset.

6. Post for Permanency: What you post to your social network may stick around for a while, even if you change your mind and remove it later. Photos and videos can be saved, comments can be forwarded.

7. Be Kind Online: Let your online activities be an example to others and try to avoid using the sort of negative comments, hurtful language or embarrassing posts that can be painful to the target.

Το Facebook σε ρόλο Big Brother

Το Facebook σε ρόλο Big Brother | Be e-Safe | Scoop.it

 Are  you a  Teacher?

 Try this…

Stand in front of a roomful of 12 and 13-year olds and deliver the following announcement:

“Class, a team of researchers will be coming to your school tomorrow to monitor your every move. These observers will record where you go (including the restroom, lunch area, playground, etc.), how long you spend there, whom you talk to, and what you do. The results of this research will help your principal customize the school to better meet your needs.”

As you deliver this news, watch their expressions morph from uninterested to curious to disbelieving and, finally, to outrage!

Okay, by now you see where this is going....

Creative Commons licenses provide a flexible range of protections and freedoms for authors, artists, and educators

.Every day, millions of people rely on CC licenses for all manner of sharing, from merely redistributing recordings or using images found on Flickr in presentations, to leveraging massive collaborative works developed on wikis in educational settings. All of this normally happens very quietly and without fuss or exception, so long as simple license conditions are respected and those involved have no other reason for complaint. But the exceptional (rare, that is) conflict proves the simple rule that CC licenses operate as designed and as advertised: disregard the license conditions and copyright is at issue; follow the conditions and copyright is not
