School Libraries | State of America's Libraries Report 2014

School Libraries | State of America's Libraries Report 2014 | Advocate for Your School Library | Scoop.it
The School Libraries section of the 2014 State of America's Libraries Report provides an overview of the top school library trends of the past year.
School libraries are at a critical point: Budget and testing pressures have led to decisions to eliminate or deprofessionalize school libraries, but the increased emphasis on college and career readiness and the integration of technology makes them more critical than ever. School librarians’ collaboration with other educators is key to literacy and imlementation of Common Core State Standards. The American Library Association (ALA) is undertaking an advocacy campaign for school libraries that sets goals in five critical areas.

The Strengthening America's Schools Act was introduced and has language about strong library programs. This is the good news. It is now up to dedicated school librarians to get their school communities (students, parents, colleagues, admins) to help them get the word to senators and representatives that this language needs to stay in tact and the Act should pass.

Innovation Excellence | 25 Things Successful Educators Do Differently

Innovation Excellence | 25 Things Successful Educators Do Differently | Advocate for Your School Library | Scoop.it

"If you ask a student what makes him or her successful in school, you probably won’t hear about some fantastic new book or video lecture series. Most likely you will hear something like, “It was all Mr. Jones. He just never gave up on me.”

What students take away from a successful education usually centers on a personal connection with a teacher who instilled passion and inspiration for their subject. It’s difficult to measure success, and in the world of academia, educators are continually re-evaluating how to quantify learning. But the first and most important question to ask is: Are teachers reaching their students?"

The importance of instilling a need to read

The importance of instilling a need to read | Advocate for Your School Library | Scoop.it

Reading for pleasure at the age of 15 is a strong factor in determining future social mobility. Indeed, it has been revealed as the most important indicator of the future success of the child.

That was the startling finding of research carried out by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development on education and reading, and their role in promoting social mobility. It highlights why getting teenagers to read for pleasure is more than a sepia-tinted ambition for frustrated parents. It is a fundamental social issue.

Teacher librarians are too important to cut - Standard-Examiner

There have been good things happening in the Ogden School District. There is passion to see that students’ test scores improve and students graduate with the skills they will need for the work they do and the lives they will lead.

The primary purpose of the library media program is to empower students to be critical thinkers, make informed choices and be problem solvers. Dr. William A Sederburg, recently retired Utah Commissioner of Higher Education, said “Preserving and expanding school libraries are essential to our success in this information-intensive age. The school library isn’t your mother’s library anymore.”

"The mission of librarians, according to Lankes, is to “improve society through facilitating knowledge creation in their communities.” I’d unpack that as saying librarians enable learning, which as any librarian will tell you is common practice. It’s so common, in fact, that we never seemed to notice. Now it’s the story we need to tell."

Yes teacher librarians are in the business of learning and learning to learn!

Pippa Davies @PippaDavies 's curator insight, May 8, 2013 8:13 AM

Librarians have a multi-dimensional role to play in any organisation.  Literacy and technology are just part of a day's work,  it is all about integrating knowledge and helping patrons learn what works best for them.

Pennsylvania Study Concludes School Librarians Boost Student Achievement | Advocate for Your School Library | Scoop.it

The Pennsylvania School Librarians Association (PSLA), Education Law Center (ELC) and Health Sciences Library Consortium were awarded a National Leadership research grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) for this study. By analyzing the Pennsylvania System of School Assessment (PSSA), which measures reading, writing, math, and science achievement for schoolchildren, this study determined that “reading and writing scores are better for students who have a full-time certified librarian than those who don’t.”

Advocate outside the education sector to get some attention.

It is this statement that alerts me to the need to do this ... "When the study initially began, researchers discovered that many lawmakers were ignorant to the struggles facing school libraries in that many did not know that schools were not required to have libraries, while others were unaware of how quickly school library programs were being cut."

Dennis T OConnor's comment, April 30, 2013 12:21 PM
