We've blogged before about the International Cancer Benchmarking Partnership (ICBP) – a collaboration between researchers trying to understand how and why cancer survival varies between different countries.
Haley Tanigami's insight:
Lung cancer starts when abnormals cells grow out of control in the lungs. They have the ability to invade nearby tissues, this is how the tumors are formed. There are two major forms of lung cancer: small cell lung cancer and non-small cell lung cancer. The small cell lung cancer makes up 15% of all lung cancer, this type is confined to the chest cavity and is less likely to spread. This type can quickly reproduce cancer cells and creat large tumors faster. Non-small cell cancer is the most common and takes up about 85% of all lung cancers. There are three major kinds of this cancer:Squamous cell Carcinoma, Adenocarcinoma, and Large cell Carcinoma. The most common cause of lung cancer is by smoking as well as second hand smoke. Both are contributors of the number one cancer killer. Lung cancer is usually first found on a chest x-ray or CT Scan, from there doctors will take a few other tests to find out how advanced the cancer is. Usually lung cancer is found when it has already advanced and spread. Rarely is it ever found in the early stages when treatments are most effective.
