This is consistent with my observations when I was at university.  As a teacher, I am also now exploring other ways for students to learn, including self-paced teaching, problem based learning and peer-based interaction.

Peer Instruction:

"

“And something happened in my classroom which I had never seen before,” he says. “The entire classroom erupted in chaos. They were dying to explain it to one another and to talk about it.”

Mazur says after just a few minutes of talking to each other, most of the students seemed to have a much better understanding of the concept he’d been trying to teach.

“The 50 percent who had the right answer effectively convinced the other 50 percent,” he says."

Very cool......

It's exciting to see universities embracing teaching methods other than lecture!  Lecture is one method, but so many of us don't learn that way.  The brain research is there to back it up.  Now it's time for everyone to get on board.

I have been too busy lately to share this great new development at Wikispaces, so I want to take a few minutes this morning to do just that...

Wikispaces has announced a wonderful new feature for educators called Wikispaces Classroom.  Wikispaces was already a powerful and easy-to-use tool for collaboration, but now it includes features that teachers will find even more useful for using the Wikispaces platform for a wide variety of learning experiences.

This blog post on the Wikispaces blog provides some essential "getting started" information and I encourage you to explore how to use Wikispaces Classroom with your students today!

For more information about Wikispaces Classroom, check out these recent blog posts directly from the Wikispaces team:

Nancy Wah Day's curator insight, May 31, 10:16 PM
The collaborative power of wikis can have huge benefits for teaching and learning. Wikispaces is one of many which is offered free for education purposes. I like the clean and simple format of wikispaces. It has all the functions needed for teachers to provide a safe learning environment and students can share and collaborate effectively

May I also add Present.Me that allows you to attach a video of yourself presenting to your powerpoint presentation. I use it to send to my class when I cannot be there for their lessons. Genuis.

I agree Charlotte! Present.me is awesome, I use it too. And Prezi, and many more tools.... But that was the author's choice. I like the annotations and tips very much!

Using Technology to Personalize Learning and Assess Students in Real-Time | Education News | BC Education | Scoop.it

In 1915, famed educator John Dewey wrote a book entitled Schools of Tomorrow in which he complained that the conventional public school “is arranged to make things easy for the teacher who wishes quick and tangible results.”[i] Rather than fostering personal growth, he argued that “the ordinary school impressed the little one into a narrow area, into a melancholy silence, into a forced attitude of mind and body.”[ii]
