                 Battle of Iwo Jima lasted from February till March of 1945.  The United States Armed Forces fought in battle and captured Iwo Jima from Japanese.  The entire battle lasted a total of five weeks.  Joe Rosenthal’s captured the flag rising in a very famous photo.  Iwo Jima is only 4.5 miles long and 2.5 miles wide.

                  Iwo Jima was very important so the Japanese were determined to keep control over it. The base could serve as an emergency-landing base for broken down B-29s. The United States outnumbered the Japanese 70,000 to 22,000. Americans killed “double the deaths of 9/11” says one source.

                   Iwo Jima is shaped like a “pork chop.” Lieutenant- General Kuribayashi was in control over the Japanese soldiers. Due to such a small amount of space the Japanese knew they had to defend the island with their lives.

This is a letter written from lieutenant William Hall to his wife. He wrote it shortly after the was so it would still be fresh in memory. He wrote it from his own personal experiences, only speaking for himself and how he took the battle. Hall talks about the trip to Iwo and how he was scared. He talks about what he took part in to successfully capture Iwo Jima.

This was an interview from John Bradely. H e was one of the men who raised the flag on Iwo Jima after its capture. The flag was crried by Lieutenant Shrier.  He states there were two flags that were raised but the first wasnt big enough to view from a distant. On one of the nights of battle while digging a whole to hide his weapons him and a couple of his men were hit by a Jap motar shell and broke his leg. He had to be flown out to safety.

The Battle of Iwo Jima took place in February 1945. The capture of Iwo Jima was part of a three-point plan the Americans had for winning the war in the Far East..

From this website i learned that Iwo Jima is 4.5 miles long and 2.5 miles wide. The capture of Iwo Jima by the Americans was apart of their 3 point plan for winning the war in the far East. The fact that Iwo  Jima was in such close range to Japan that made Americans want it even more. It took United States over a month to take Iwo Jima under their control.

Pontoon- a flat-bottomed boat or hollow metal cylinder used to with others to support a temporary bridge or floating landing stage.

 

Sentence- we had to replace the broken platoon so our plane could land safely in the water.

 

Interminable- endlessSentence- my mom yelled at me for an interminable time when I told her I broke her favorite vase.

 

Mortar- a short, smoothbore gun for firing shells (bombs) at high angles.Sentence- the Japs fired their mortars from every angle. We did not see it coming.

 

Bombardment- a continuous attack with bombs, shells, or other missiles.Sentence- the U.S bombarded the Japs when they attacked them on Iwo Jima.

 

Forfeit- lose or be deprived of property or a right or privilege as a penalty for wrongdoing.The soccer team had to forfeit because they didn’t have enough players.

 

Expeditious- done with speed and efficiency.Mr. Green told the band members to put our instruments away expeditiously.

 

 Camaraderie- mutual trust and friendship among people who spend a lot of time togetherThe soldiers gained camaraderie while being in the army.

 

Impenetrable- impossible to pass through or enterIt was impenetrable for me to crawl through the tube.

 

Casualties- a person killed or injured in a war or accident.There were 205 casualties killed in the shooting in the mall.

 

10. Combat- fighting between armed forces.

The men were killed in combat.

Joe Rosenthal is the man behind the camera. He captured the picture of the men raising the flag although there has been some suspicion about whether or not he really did it. This photo has been said to be "the most widely reproduced photo of all time." This photo was taken in Febuary of 1945. Although he snapped many photos that day, this one just happened to be the most significant. He feels that his picture over shadowed the others who took pictures as well. But was very greatful for the success he got from the picture.

The Battle of Iwo Jima was a battle between U.S and Japanese. The fight was over an island the U.S wanted to use as a landing site in case of emergencies. The battle lasted 36 days with the U.S coming out on top. 1030 out of 20,000 Japanese survived.
