As Jeff: additional strings and musical ability | Bass Guitar magazine

As Jeff: additional strings and musical ability | Bass Guitar magazine | Bass Guitar | Scoop.it
Most bass players that you listen to acquired their skill through experience and work, not a sense of genius or musical inborn savvy
Mike Ippersiel's insight:

100% agree with Jeff about most musicians acquiring their skills the old fashioned way - hard work. The myth of having a natural talent to be a professional bassist keeps many a bassist (and musician) back.

Chat with a bassist whose 'talent' you admire and I'm sure that 9 times out of 10, they'll tell you they became the bassist that they are because of a solid work ethic when it comes to practicing and expanding their capabilities on the bass.

CHICK BASSIST celebrates chick bassists: Tina Weymouth | Hares Rock Lots

CHICK BASSIST celebrates chick bassists: Tina Weymouth | Hares Rock Lots | Bass Guitar | Scoop.it
Mike Ippersiel's insight:

Tiny Weymouth is a cool bassist. Love the bassline to Psycho Killer. Not overly keen on the Tom Tom Club stuff - but I'm always impressed at anyone who can play busy on the bass and sing - something I've struggled with personally!

Bassplayer: Jason Newsted Returns to His Thrash-Metal Roots

Bassplayer: Jason Newsted Returns to His Thrash-Metal Roots | Bass Guitar | Scoop.it
Mike Ippersiel's insight:

Jason Newsted was a huge inspiration for me to pick up the bass. I have to admit that I'm glad to see him back into heavy music and I find it even more inspiring that he's decided to also front the band with vocals. The music has been pretty solid as well - I hope this marks a new chapter for him, from the sounds of this interview it doesn't sound like he plans on 'retiring' anytime soon!

Although I'm not 100% sure that I'd call it "thrash metal"?

Bassists…. Lets use more Harmonics!!

Bassists…. Lets use more Harmonics!! | Bass Guitar | Scoop.it
Everybody loves the low-end power of the bass, whether it's in a club, at a metal concert or watching any live music. Its that punch, that t
Mike Ippersiel's insight:

I'm in agreement with Matthew Griffiths in this post - harmonics are awesome and rarely used on bass...probably making them even cooler when you pull them out.

There was an Alice Cooper bassist on the Trash tour circa 1989/1990 that put some harmonics into his bass solo that was pretty cool. But I have to agree that harmonics aren't often worked into a song  on bass, usually more of a bass solo type thing.

Basscast Episode 003 - Starting Out on Bass Guitar - Bass Guitar Rocks | Bass Guitar | Scoop.it
In episode 3 of the Basscast, Jason Raso and I discuss starting out on bass guitar and what you need to get started. Plus Tony Levin & the Jackson Five.
Mike Ippersiel's insight:

This is our best episode yet.

I highly recommend people check out the Tony Levin resource videos (he does a killer version of Led Zep's Black Dog) as well as the Jason Raso Quartet performing "All That Democracy Jazz" and the bass track of the week.
