HowStuffWorks "How March Madness Works"

HowStuffWorks "How March Madness Works" | Basketball Players | Scoop.it
March Madness determines the national champion of college basketball. Learn about the March Madness name, tournament invites and March Madness seed stats.
Michael Frank's insight:

College basketball is a big division. The different leagues are based on where you are located, how good you are, and the amount of athletes you have for the certain sport. Division one is the highest and best of all of the leagues. This is where the top athletes play and also where most of them come out of to go to the NBA. Division 2 is also pretty good. Some of the teams next year in fact will be moving up to the division one league because they have a successful winning streak. Last but not least is the division three league. The reason why it is the lowest is because this is mainly for the smaller schools that have less athletes. None of the players from this league have been able to move on to the NBA because of the small selection the scouts have.

In this article, I realized that if I want to move on in life in my basketball career then I will have to push very hard and move onto the division one or division two league straight out of high school.

Basketball Fundamentals and Player Tips, Coach's Clipboard Playbook

Basketball Fundamentals and Player Tips, Coach's Clipboard Playbook | Basketball Players | Scoop.it
This page links a number of basketball player fundamental topics that will help teach footwork, ball-handling, dribbling, dribble-moves, passing, catching, shooting, defending, rebounding, cutting, screening, etc.
Michael Frank's insight:

In order to understand the game of basketball, you have to know the fundamentals just like any other sport. Basketball requires many skills that are in a way hard to master. If you don’t have these skills down pat, then you probably will not be a good basketball player. There are certain techniques to everything you have to do in basketball. In order to shoot, you have to bend your legs, have your arms at a ninety degree angle and your eyes have to be focused on the rim. Same with defense. In order to play defense, you have to “sit down” in a stance and slide your feet and beat the person you are guarding to a spot so you are able to steal the ball. To become good at this, you have to practice constantly and build up your muscles so you can withstand all the impact that hits you when you are in the game. Lastly, if you practice in this sport than you will become a great player and possibly go somewhere with your career when you grow up.

This article tells me that I have to practice and prepare for anything in this sport. To me, this is very useful and I will follow this as I have before to become a better player.

It takes a lot of practice to become a prominent and accomplished basketball player. As you mentioned in the article, there are many steps in each part of the game. On offence the objective is to get past your defender and score a point. They do this by quick decisions and fast movements to try to fake out the defender. The defenders job is to anticipate the fake and don’t fall for it. His main job is to keep the offence player from scoring. There are certain forms to follow to achieve the best success in your position. Some things that help are bent knees, arms out, and to be on the balls of your feet. The more you practice the game of basketball the better you get, and the better you get the opportunity’s are greater in life. Basketball is unlike any other sport in the world and requires skills that are unique to only basketball. Like another sport basketball has its rules, regulations, guidelines, and fundamentals that every play at a basic level should know.

International Basketball

International Basketball | Basketball Players | Scoop.it
In some countries the way the game of basketball is played is completely different. These articles here will prepare you for everything you need to know about basketball overseas
Michael Frank's insight:

Basketball is a known sport that is played in many areas. Not many people in Europe play this sport though. Basketball is making a great movement and is continuously spreading throughout the world. Basketball is moving up on the top sports list and it is behind the one sport that many people play which is soccer. Both being very tiring sports, they are the top two sports that are being played in the world at the moment. As you can see in this article, it says that there are more teams that are beginning to enter in the Euro league obviously overseas. Some of the players there are even so good that they can come to the United States to play basketball in the NBA. A handful of players from the Euro league are striving in the NBA and some have become all stars for more than one time. If basketball continues to grow the way it is, than it will most likely become the top sport of the world and many more people will give it a try.

I was happy to read this article because it shows that my favorite sport is growing and I feel like it is giving me better chance to pursue my dreams.

While I do enjoy this story, as well as Michael’s inspiring writing on how great basketball is. I do nit agree with Michael on the fact that basketball is one of the most [played sports in the world. Yes, people all over the globe, but in no way does it compare to sports like soccer and tennis. These sorts are played all over because not much is need. Basketball however you need a hoop, which can sometimes cost hundreds, if not thousands in dollars. In most of these first world countries basketball is a popular sport, but in places like Africa you are lucky to have a community hoop. This is why I believe that the United States is such a leader in the advancements in the game of basketball. Other countries that lead the way in the game of basketball are Spain , which is a first world country, China, which is a first world country, and Canada, which is also a first world country! I think the point has been made that basketball is a sport which thrives in first world countries!

Chris Paul - NBA Player - Los Angeles Clippers #3 - Guard

Chris Paul - NBA Player - Los Angeles Clippers #3 - Guard | Basketball Players | Scoop.it
Chris Paul - NBA Player - Los Angeles Clippers #3 - Guard
Michael Frank's insight:

Chris Paul is one of the NBA’s best players. He started out slow being drafted to the New Orleans Hornets but as his years in the NBA progressed, he became greater every time. Being in the NBA, you have to put in a lot of time and effort to do the work. Every person that is where they are in the NBA has worked very hard to be where they are right now. From being in the gym 24/7 to getting injured in games and fighting through the pain to win the game. Today, Chris Paul is now on the Los Angeles Clippers and he is an NBA all star and leads the league in assists. Many people were surprised at how Paul can do this considering that he started playing basketball at a late age. If you want to succeed at this sport, you must practice everyday and stay away from bad influences. The stats posted above for Chris Paul clearly show how much hard work he puts in each and everyday. At the rate Paul is going, he has the potential to become the greatest player in the NBA.

In this article it shows that no matter where you come from you can always make it big. I hope that one day i can become like Chris Paul and help my teammates get better at what they do.

Very nice interpretation of the NBA.com article which portrays Chris Paul's ability to play the game of basketball at an elite level. One of my favorite parts of your insight on the article is how you discuss how Chris Paul has been able to approve on his statistical performance each season. You talk about his time in New Orleans and how his trade to the Los Angeles Clippers has led to a steady incline in his statistics, elevating his game to a new level. You also discuss how his statistical performance demonstrates his passion for basketball and his many hours of working to perfect his craft. Chris Paul is known for his "never give up" mentality which you talked about in your insight. I think you saw this as very important for people who wish to become professionals in any sport, but especially in basketball. I also like how you took his statistics and inferred with his steady incline that he could finish his career as one of the best point guards or even basketball players to ever play the game of basketball.

Complete 2013 NBA Draft coverage on ESPN.com, including mock drafts, player analysis, draft order, draft history, and more.
Michael Frank's insight:

The NBA is the highest stage in basketball that you can reach in your playing career. Every person there has worked hard through there life to be where they are. In order to get into the NBA, you have to be one of the best players in college basketball. Most of the top ranked players in college go in the draft early and become the most famous as well. All of the college come from the division one conference and are the most dedicated young people to the game of basketball. Through their hard work and dedication, they become famous and can get sponsored by brands. Entering the NBA draft gets you sponsored by Adidas right away. To gain a sponsorship however, you have to be a good player and wear the brands gear before you get sponsored by them. Not only do the players get to become famous but they also get to help children who want to meet them before games. Going into the NBA is a great honor in both sports and in community.

This article made me realize that I have to work hard to achieve my goals. If I don’t work hard and try to pursue my dreams then I will end up doing something that I don’t really want to do when I grow up.

How Great Basketball Players Become Great

How Great Basketball Players Become Great | Basketball Players | Scoop.it
Did Kobe Bryant become great on talent alone? It helped, but there are other qualities that make him elite. Learn how you can apply the same traits to your game
Michael Frank's insight:

In order to success in anything in life, you must be good at it or learn it very fast. In basketball, most people start out young so they can pick up the skills of the game as easy as possible. Most NBA stars have been playing basketball from a very young age. They practice everyday and workout and continue to push harder each and every day so they can get better and better each time. Plenty of people who have been playing since a young age have been rejected from teams however and still continue to play. The greatest player that the NBA has ever had, Michael Jordan, was rejected from his high school team when he tried out for the first year. He used this as motivation to push himself to the next level and work harder. Michael Jordan the next year then made the varsity basketball team at his school and then moved on to North Carolina University to play basketball. From there, he went to the NBA as the first round first pick to the Chicago Bulls and became the greatest player the NBA has ever had.

In this article, it shows me that many players have failed in order to succeed. It also tells me to push through everything even failure because I will eventually get to my goal.

Louisville's Ware suffers gruesome leg injury

Louisville's Ware suffers gruesome leg injury | Basketball Players | Scoop.it
A gruesome injury that left Louisville guard Kevin Ware with a broken leg plunged Lucas Oil Stadium into horrified silence, with coach Rick Pitino wiping away tears and shocked teammates openly weeping during Sunday's Midwest Regional final.
Michael Frank's insight:

In sports, not many injuries have gone down like this one. Kevin Ware who is apart of the Louisville college basketball team broke his leg badly. Ware went up for a block against the Duke Blue Devils and landing wrong and broke his leg. His bone of his leg then came through his skin and scared many people. Ware was on the ground waiting for the trainers to come over with the stretcher and while he was waiting many of his teammates and coaches were crying. Ware may have a chance to come back next year if he is all healed up. He is a Junior so he hopes with all his heart that he will be able to come back next year to play and try to win the title in his last season in college basketball. As Kevin Ware was leaving the court, one of the players ran over to him and took his jersey and continued to play in Ware’s jersey in honor of his intense hustle and dedication to the team.

When I was reading this article, I was sad. This made me sad because if it ever happened to me knowing that my career was in jepordy then i wouldn't know what to do. Also the article tells me to push through injuries no matter what.

Injuries have always been tough for players, their teammates, and their fans. It can determine the success of the club or school team (in this case, Louisville). Kevin Ware, a sophomore at Louisville, recently had an injury that frightened the whole world. An injury of this sort was never seen in the sport of basketball, let alone the sport world. At attempting a block from a three pointer to tie up the game, he landed badly and split his leg’s bone. It then came out of his skin on public television and the game was stopped for twenty minutes. What I want to comment on is that right before he was about to be carried out, he told his teammates not to worry- that they had to win the game. Ware kept saying over and over “Win the game, win the game.” It spurred his teammates so that because of them they began to pull away from Duke’s lead. They ended up winning by twenty. Kevin Ware is sitting in a hospital at the moment after undergoing surgery yesterday. He will be in all of our prayers.
