Infographic: Is Your Job Killing You? @abroaderview | BASIC VOWELS | Scoop.it
It is no longer a joke, your job really could be killing you.

Stress is killing people at a astronomical rate these days, and these people are not doctors and lawyers. So it is no longer a joke, your job really could be killing you. I suggest we all take a moment to stop and think of ways to de-stress and how we can lower the stress of others.

Making the Invisible Visible | Colossal | BASIC VOWELS | Scoop.it

For a second year, street art collective Mentalgassi has partnered with Amnesty International and Wieden + Kennedy creative team Lisa Jelliffe and Kirsten Rutherford to help highlight some of the year’s most prominent human rights abuse cases playing out around the world.

Mentalgassi transformed large portaits of each individual into segmented strips that are applied to the slats of fences. At first the images aren’t readily visible and only come into focus suddenly from extreme angles, reinforcing the campaign’s theme, ‘making the invisible visible‘.

Shit | Magazines | COLORS Magazine | BASIC VOWELS | Scoop.it

Colors Magazine present the Shit issue.

Feces. Excrement. Stool. Poop. Caca. Its name changes but not most people’s reaction to it. You probably ignore it, despise it, fear it. You do it behind closed doors and in private. You don’t mention it in polite company. You think shit is unspeakable. That’s if you’re lucky. Nearly two-thirds of the world – who have no toilet – must live intimately with shit. They excrete it, eat it, die from it. Diarrhea – a banal stomach bug for anyone with a bathroom – kills more children than HIV/AIDS. But shit can be fuel or fertilizer, as well as poison and death. It can heat us, feed us, cure us. It is the most underrated resource in the world. It is as rich as oil and as useful. Let us introduce you properly to shit: you won’t regret it.

The Incredible Surfer

We hooked up with Jason Mraz at Anchor Point, north of Agadir in Morocco, where he appears to be searching for the perfect wave in one of the world's greatest surfs. But the real story is about Jesse Billauer, a champion junior surfer who broke his spine in 1996 and despite being paralyzed he is still surfing today. Even more incredible, he gives motivational talks to prove to everyone that 'life rolls on'.

picNYC table by HAIKO CORNELISSEN ARCHITECTEN

picNYC table by HAIKO CORNELISSEN ARCHITECTEN | BASIC VOWELS | Scoop.it

The picNYC table with grass table top brings the rural picnic into the urban residence.

Urban farming is a fast growing phenomenon where the typically rural practice of agriculture is brought into the city. The picNYC table goes one step further and brings the rural experience of picnicking not just in the city, but into the apartment.

The folded lightweight aluminum table top and legs form a stiff framework for the grass, soil and stones (needed for drainage). The picNYC table creates a surreal experience of nature in the city that literally transforms dining. Suddenly spilling water becomes a necessity instead of a problem, wine glasses need coasters not to prevent ring stains but to avoid tumbling.

Included in the rural experience is the maintenance of the grass. No table grass mower yet exists and the grass therefore needs to be cut by hand.
Based on the number of cuts, maintenance, usage, sunlight and season, the PicNYC table responds with a variety of colors to the conditions set by the owner. However, the color can always be reset to bright green since fresh sod is available year round.

Based on the concept of transposing natural experiences to the apartment, endless alterations are possible with flowers, herbs or even vegetables. Depending on the needs and green thumbs of the owner, the PicNYC table brings various degrees and qualities of the rural experience into the urban residence. As a consequence, the PicNYC table transforms dining into a feast at a new intersection of nature and city.

Street View of Fukushima Makes Me Want to Cry

Street View of Fukushima Makes Me Want to Cry | BASIC VOWELS | Scoop.it
Just look at the destruction. Seaside towns transformed into inland mountains of rubble. Google's traveled some 44,000 kilometers through tsunami-ravaged Japanese countryside to digitally archive the immense damage. Be sure to have a hanky at the ready when exploring.

The search giant has delivered on a promise it made in July to obtain updated photos of the afflicted region. The shots are now available on Google Maps as well as a special site "Build the Memory," where users can compare before-and-after shots of the devastation. The updated pictures also include a new and much requested Google Maps feature—timestamps listing the month and year the photo was taken.

Vik Muniz's - Pictures of Junk and Garbage - My Modern Metropolis

Vik Muniz's - Pictures of Junk and Garbage - My Modern Metropolis | BASIC VOWELS | Scoop.it

We've previously covered a documentary called Wasteland, featuring visual artist Vik Muniz's work. Today we bring you some of his creations from two of his series entitled Pictures of Junk and Pictures of Garbage. In each of these projects, Muniz creates images using... you guessed it: junk and garbage.

The New York-based artist constructs painting-like visuals out of random waste. He utilizes discarded items that include food products, dirt, toys, papers, plastics, wires, old clothes, and tires. The list is never-ending and ever-fascinating. His innovative creations have a magnetism that would otherwise be unfit for a pile of garbage.

In Pictures of Garbage, Muniz takes pictures of catadores, the people of Brazil who collect recyclable materials from garbage dumps, and recreates their images using discarded rubbish. After meeting these hardworking people, it became a collaborative effort in which the subjects helped to create their re-imaging. Muniz's other waste-fueled project, Pictures of Junk, is the artist's junkyard reinterpretations of classic paintings, including Caravaggio's Narcissus.

Refugees flight and expulsion in the world [interactive map] | BASIC VOWELS | Scoop.it

Every year, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) issues a report concerning the number of approximately 21 million people worldwide falling under its mandate: as refugees who are forced to leave their countries due to war, political, racial or religious persecution, as internally displaced persons, or as repatriates on their way back home. This interactive visualization attempts to give an insight into the phenomenom of global flight and expulsion. It is based on the annual statistical reports of the UNHCR between 1988 and 2008.

Interview: Grandma's 21st Century Tips Creator - My Modern Metropolis | BASIC VOWELS | Scoop.it

Universally, children and teens always seem to brush off their parents' and grandparents' advice, believing that they already know everything and don't need to be told what to do. However, as Chacho Puebla grows older, he finds himself in his elders' shoes, giving his own son the same advice that he once thought was unimportant. As he reminisces about the kinds of things his family told him, he started wondering kind of advice he wished they told him while he was growing up.
