Skyscraping Tower of Abraham Lincoln Books

Skyscraping Tower of Abraham Lincoln Books | BASIC VOWELS | Scoop.it
There is a lot to be said about Abraham Lincoln, one of America's most influential presidents, which is made abundantly clear by the newly erected tower of books in the nation's capital. The cylindrical structure stands three stories high at approximately 34 feet in height and features over 15,000 titles about the 16th president of the free world. The innumerable volumes of works present in this towering pillar symbolize the never-ending discussion about the famed American president.

Placed in the lobby of Ford's Theatre Center for Education and Leadership, it makes for an excellent introductory piece to the new museum dedicated to Lincoln's history. Fascinatingly, it is adjacent to where Lincoln died at the Petersen House. The museum is currently under construction and set to open later this month, in time for President's Day.

Light Stencils in Vietnam | Colossal

Light Stencils in Vietnam | Colossal | BASIC VOWELS | Scoop.it

This past September photographer Wittner Fabrice had the opportunity to visit Vietnam where he managed to execute a number of his unique light stencils in various locations around the country. Keep in mind these are not digital, but rather long-exposure photos created with lights shone through large cut stencils. Though I really enjoyed Wittner’s previous light paintings commemorating the Christchurch earthquake, the picturesque backdrops of Vietnam as well as a clear improvement in technique make these even more special.

The Miniature Pothole Gardener - My Modern Metropolis

The Miniature Pothole Gardener - My Modern Metropolis | BASIC VOWELS | Scoop.it

Steve Wheen started the Pothole Gardener project as a part of a university course. Over time, the project turned into a blog that follows his gardening efforts around East London. Wheen describes his endeavors as "Part art project, part labour of love, part experiment, part mission to highlight how s*** our roads are – the pictures and gardens are supposed to put smiles on peoples faces and alert them to potholes!"

Although the miniature pothole gardens are cute and tiny, they pack a strong message. Hopefully the city of London notices them enough to start doing something about the very rampant pothole problem.

Fragile installation - Massive Recycled Materials Garden in Mall

Fragile installation - Massive Recycled Materials Garden in Mall | BASIC VOWELS | Scoop.it

Using everyday materials, like water bottles, bubble wrap and cardboard, found in recycling containers at a major shopping mall in downtown Montreal, artists Roadsworth (i.e. Peter Gibson) and Brian Armstrong, in collaboration with PROJEKROOM collective, created a massive urban garden that stood five stories high. Displayed at the Montréal Eaton Centre, the very site from which the materials were found, water bottles became streams, cardboard turned into trees and plastic film formed insect wings. (Did anyone else notice the flying soda frog?).

The installation, called Fragile, hoped to raise awareness of the value of everyday materials and call attention to the fragility of our ecosystem. Make sure you watch the video, below, to see how this impressive installation came together.

Plastic Tree Raises Environmental Awareness - My Modern Metropolis

Plastic Tree Raises Environmental Awareness - My Modern Metropolis | BASIC VOWELS | Scoop.it

Miha Artnak, the artist behind the brilliant Layers series, has recently finished his newest piece of street art entitiled The Rise of The Fall. Found inf Slovenia, in this piece Artnak covered the branches of a tree with a number of plastic bags that nearly obscure it when observed from a distance. Much like his other work featuring the medium of plastic bags, The Plastic Bag Monster, Artnak is hoping to make a statement and raise awareness about humankind's waste and rampant consumerism. By covering the tree, this can be interpreted to mean that if something isn't done to help reverse this trend, our garbage may soon overtake nature.

REVIEW by Leonora Oppenheim, designer and writer for TreeHugger

“With all the terrible things that are happening in the world, many provoked by mass consumption, it is easy to forget just how far we, as a human race, have come. [...] No Somos Hormigas is a celebration of what we have done right, tempered informatively by what’s still going wrong”.

Prêt à jeter - Documentaire | ARTE

Prêt à jeter - Documentaire | ARTE | BASIC VOWELS | Scoop.it

The Givebox - Sharing is Caring

The Givebox - Sharing is Caring | BASIC VOWELS | Scoop.it

An idea initiated by two young men from Berlin in Germany, who are only known by their first names. The Givebox is about the size of a phone booth or closet and the way it works is, that you can bring your unwanted items, that have been waiting in your basement or attic to get used again, there for others to take them and in return you can pick something for yourself. It's an anonymous trade of things that have become useless to their owners, but could be a treasure to someone else.

Where Do You Think Your Trash Goes? | BASIC VOWELS | Scoop.it

This was our entry for the 2010 Young Guns Awards. The campaign was focused on making people aware of the fact that trash doesn't just magically dissapear, and that we instead need to consume responsibly before we have to face the inevitable. By the way, that's me doing the voice over on the case study video.
