A basic income could thus help unshackle the free market from policies now needed to protect labor. The positive sum power of exchanges in the free market could be unleashed, and a minimum wage would be unnecessary, because labor could receive its fair share of the benefits.

The current management of money by central banks results in a widening gap between rich and poor in many regions worldwide. We are facing a global underclass that can barely make a living, regardless of how hard they work or how much money they manage to save. Formerly, the still prominent Dollar was backed by gold or the Euro by the value of its economic strength, today the central banks are printing banknotes to perpetuate the global financial casino, where 99% of us have been moved in debt relations. In 2004, the Terra initiative suggested a global currency based on a basket of goods, backed by multinational companies. Inspired by the GraDiDo project, the OCCupy CUrrency values community work with a base income and taxes members sharply to finance public services. OCCCU is intended as a starting point for further discussions as a complementary to traded currencies and regional alternative money initiatives. OCCCU can be used immediately anywhere. It innovates the way we do business and values community or family work.

Such a reform would also give a major acceleration to the evolution of the Big Society, to a society rooted in community action and mutual help. More controversially, by reducing fear of penury, universal minimum income could also generate an extraordinary liberation of enterprise and creativity.

I love all the bloggers and the citizen journalists and the whole bunch of people who put their skills into services which conduce to the greater good, instead of just earning heaps of money. However, those people need to live from something, too. Something needs to pay their bills, and it's not gonna be the community which uses their services for free.

'Basic Income can be compatible with Peer-to-Peer philosophy by providing a sense of economic equality that suites the voluntary nature of peer networks. A secured standard of living can help develop even richer economic foundations for existing and as yet developed peer networks. '

Productivity gains are innevitable, and technology will continue to destroy hopefully as many jobs as possible. Social dividends provides a simple formula to tax the wealth concentrators and redistribute the benefits of productivity increases throughout society, and so social dividends softens the burden caused to any single person as a result of productivity gains.

Erik Brynjolfsson came up with a great phrase: “digital Athens.” The Athenian citizens had lives of leisure; they got to participate in democracy and create art. That was largely because they had slaves to do the work. Okay, I don’t want human slaves, but in a very, very automated and digitally productive economy you don’t need to work as much, as hard, with as many people, to get the fruits of the economy. So the optimistic version is that we finally have more hours in our week freed up from toil and drudgery.

'...Capitalism for example is not just a mode of production, it’s also a cultural operating system that reduces dialogue to that which can be expressed through the medium of money. Anything outside of that is not valued, it’s invisible and there lies many a problem.'
