A Day in the Heart of a Teacher

A Day in the Heart of a Teacher | Banco de Aulas | Scoop.it
A recent Friday was my 1,379th day of teaching. And it was a day that reminded me what it means to be a teacher. On Friday I used my heart so fully, and this to me is the essence of being a teacher.

Friday morning I went to City College for their annual Poetry Festival.

Humility is essential in teaching. Ultimately, I made mistakes and fretting over them was a bigger mistake. Something as simple as eating a lunch with them each day brought me closer to my students.

What do teachers think about this question? I would ask them too.

It is not that good teachers do not want to hear from their students. I think they do not know how to engage their students in dialogue. They might even be constrained by the very traditions of teaching.

What happens when a teacher removes the time-honored symbol of power from his classroom?

The article echoes Parker Palmer's commentary on teacher desks and podiums. We use them to stand between us and students, defining our place in the classroom.

I had a desk for years and rarely sat at it. I meandered. If I sat, students would comment I must not be feeling well.

I eventually got rid of the desk, when I had tables in the classroom. I sat with my students, read with them, had conversations with them, etc. Without a desk, I shared the landscape differently with students.

I prepared plans at the tables with various resources and books piled around the laptop..

When we engage in telling people how to teach like us, we engage in best practices. There may be a role for them somewhere in teaching; I am not sure where. A conversation with questions for the other teacher to reflect on their teaching is a better path. What if we took turns observing each other? It might lead to a sense of reciprocity that is sorely lacking in schools.

Lemann e Omidyar investirão US$ 3 milhões em apoio a base curricular

This has a hidden interpretation. We should also critically reflect on the curricula and their meaning in the 21st Century. Perhaps, this is something students can engage in with teachers, as well.

Debating is good. A challenge is to not let students become accustomed to debating something they do not truly believe in and that there are only two sides to a debate. Another skill debating might encourage is problem solving. How do differing views, and I don't mean just two, challenge us to work together and solve problems?

Better is one of those words that does not have a fixed meaning. A good read of Aristotle and Dewey reinforces that understanding. Dewey argued that growth is its own objective. It feeds into more growth. It is better understood through the gerund growing.

The article provides good ideas. One that was interesting was the essay asking to write about "if they were the teacher."

The First Climate Model Turns 50, And Predicted Global Warming Almost Perfectly | Ethan Siegel | Forbes.com

The First Climate Model Turns 50, And Predicted Global Warming Almost Perfectly | Ethan Siegel | Forbes.com | Banco de Aulas | Scoop.it

Modeling the Earth's climate is one of the most daunting, complicated tasks out there. If only we were more like the Moon, things would be easy. The Moon has no atmosphere, no oceans, no icecaps, no seasons, and no complicated flora and fauna to get in the way of simple radiative physics. No wonder it's so challenging to model! In fact, if you google "climate models wrong", eight of the first ten results showcase failure.

But headlines are never as reliable as going to the scientific source itself, and the ultimate source, in this case, is the first accurate climate model ever: by Syukuro Manabe and Richard T. Wetherald. 50 years after their groundbreaking 1967 paper, the science can be robustly evaluated, and they got almost everything exactly right.

It’s difficult to be a teacher today. Between covering all the state standards, preparing students for state testing, conducting data analyses of student learning and our own progress as teachers, and providing evidence for evaluations, we have a lot on our plates—and I didn’t even mention preparing lessons, let alone teaching them. It’s even more difficult to be a teacher of mathematics, that being a subject that students rarely find interesting and engaging. However, I’ve found some techniques to make math joyful and interesting to students, while still covering the standards and adhering to all the mandates of education today.

| BricoGeek.com | Banco de Aulas | Scoop.it
