Ways to Use Lego in the Classroom

Ways to Use Lego in the Classroom | Banco de Aulas | Scoop.it
When I'm not busy working on our teaching websites, I can usually be found playing Lego with our children! It's an incredibly creative toy, but it can also be used to support work in a number of different curriculum areas. Here is our HUGE list of ways to use Lego in the classroom. Many of these ideas have been contributed by our wonderful Facebook community. If you have any other suggestions, please add a comment at the bottom of the page.

Don't forget that many of these activities could use Duplo too!

Megacities, not nations, are the world’s dominant, enduring social structures | Banco de Aulas | Scoop.it
Cities are mankind’s most enduring and stable mode of social organization, outlasting all empires and nations over which they have presided. Today cities have become the world’s dominant demographic and economic clusters. As the sociologist Christopher Chase-Dunn has pointed out, it is not population or territorial size that drives world-city status, but economic weight

Teacher Agency: Educators Moving from a Fixed to a Growth Mindset

Teacher Agency: Educators Moving from a Fixed to a Growth Mindset | Banco de Aulas | Scoop.it

These are external obstacles whereby the educator places blame for resisting change or engaging in a growth mindset outside of one’s own responsibility. The result is a fixed mindset of learned helplessness, “I cannot change because the system won’t let me change.” Sometimes educators are creating some obstacles for themselves that in reality don’t exist.

Alternatives To Homework: A Chart For Teachers

Alternatives To Homework: A Chart For Teachers | Banco de Aulas | Scoop.it
Part of rethinking learning means rethinking the bits and pieces of the learning process–teaching strategies, writing pieces, etc.

Which is what makes the following chart from Kathleen Cushman’s Fires in the Mind compelling. Rather than simply a list of alternatives to homework, it instead contextualizes the need for work at home (or, “homework”). It does this by taking typical classroom situations–the introduction of new material, demonstrating a procedure, etc.), and offering alternatives to traditional homework assignments.

As a teacher myself, I know that sometimes you just have to trust your instinct and unfortunately, that doesn't always go along with the what we are "supposed to do." We are very well trained professionals and we need to be treated as such.
