I really like some of these ideas for little short tasks to have students do at the end of a class to ensure there is learning happening the whole time. Exit slips are quick and easy ways to check for understanding and to hold students accountable for their learning.

"A recent Gallup poll of 170,000 Americans — 10,000 of whom were teachers — found that teaching is the second most satisfying profession (after medicine). Ironically, the same Gallup poll found that in contrast to their overall happiness with their jobs, teachers often rate last or close to the bottom for workplace engagement and happiness.

“Of all the professions we studied in the U.S., teachers are the least likely to say that their opinions count and the least likely to say that their supervisor creates an open and sharing environment,” said Brandon Busteed, executive director of Gallup Education, at the Next New World Conference.

This is a troubling trend at a time when schools need to continue to attract high quality educators. “If the perception in our country is that teaching is not a great profession to go into, we certainly aren’t going to be encouraging really talented young people to be thinking about the profession of teaching,” Busteed said in an interview with Stephen Smith on the American RadioWorks podcast."

It’s no secret that most teachers today feel demoralized — poll after survey tells us so, and it’s no wonder, given that they feel school reformers have put targets on their backs with teacher evaluation systems they feel are unfair and support for programs that they believe belittle their profession. In this post an educator explains why she thinks so many teachers feel so awful so much of the time. The author is Ellie Herman, who took a rather unorthodox path to the world of education.

For two decades she was a writer/producer for television shows including “The Riches,” “Desperate Housewives,” “Chicago Hope” and “Newhart.” She wrote fiction that appeared in literary journals, among them The Massachusetts Review, The Missouri Review and the O.Henry Awards Collection. Then, in 2007, she decided “on an impulse” to become an English teacher. She got a job at a South Los Angeles charter school that was 97 percent Latino and where 96 percent of the students lived below the poverty line. She taught drama, creative writing, English 11 and ninth-grade Composition until 2013, when she decided to stop teaching and spend a year visiting classrooms and learning from other teachers.

Herman chronicled the lessons she learned on her blog, Gatsby in L.A., where a version of the following post appeared. Herman, who gave me permission to publish this piece, was awarded first and third place prizes in the 2014 SoCal Journalist Awards given by the Los Angeles Press Club for pieces on her blog. Now she teaches reading and writing at an after-school enrichment program for students from low-income families, visits the classrooms of great teachers, and works with writers, artists and other creative people.

She has written some popular posts on this blog, including “Are you a bad teacher? Here’s how to tell,” to which she refers in the following piece.

perhaps the real issue is that teachers are no longer teachers - they have become responsible for more and more than just teaching and the process of teaching has become more challenging as they face sliding standards, a dumbing down of curriculum, greater administrative demands , constantly changing bureaucratic demands, greater social complications- computer addiction, disengagement,split families .....

Educação superior é garantia de emprego formal, indica estudo da OIT

A educação superior é um pré-requisito para que milhões de jovens de países em desenvolvimento encontrem um trabalho decente, aponta um estudo da Organização Internacional do Trabalho (OIT) divulgado hoje (16). O relatório, feito com base em dados coletados em 28 países em 2012 e 2013, comprova que a educação superior “serve como uma garantia bastante confiável” de emprego formal.
De acordo com o levantamento, oito em cada dez jovens (83%) com qualificação acima do ensino médio (que cursaram uma universidade ou outro tipo de curso técnico profissionalizante) estão em empregos não vulneráveis. Enquanto isso, a conclusão do Ensino Médio, apenas, não é garantia suficiente para encontrar melhores condições no mercado de trabalho.
“Está claro que continuar a empurrar jovens menos qualificados para o mercado de trabalho é uma situação de perda, tanto para os jovens, que são destinados a trabalhar para sobreviver, como para a economia, que não ganha em termos de incentivar o potencial produtivo de seu mercado de trabalho”, disse Theo Sparreboom, autor do estudo.
