The Student-Centered Math Class - Edutopia

The Student-Centered Math Class - Edutopia | Banco de Aulas | Scoop.it
Close your eyes and picture the most recent math class you taught. Who is doing the math? Who is doing the talking? Who is doing the thinking? Three years ago, my answer would have been “me”—the teacher. My students were doing math, but I was probably telling them how to think and what to do most of the time.

My big aha moment was being introduced to the research of Peter Liljedahl, a professor at Simon Fraser University. Liljedahl proposes three strategies that you can implement in order to create what he calls the thinking classroom: Start with good problems, use visibly random groups, and work regularly on vertical nonpermanent surfaces. I started using these three strategies in my math classes, and they have been an absolute game-changer. I can confidently say that my students now do most of the thinking and talking in my classroom.

5 ways to communicate with your students outside the classroom

5 ways to communicate with your students outside the classroom | Banco de Aulas | Scoop.it
How do you communicate with your students? In class, of course. Face to face, workshopping, watching them communicate with one another and popping in to support or challenge them.

But what about outside of the classroom? Here are five ideas for establishing connections and methods for students to have access to resources and help when they need it.

Some of these are also ways in which parents can keep informed about their child’s progress and what they are doing in your class. By using some of these ideas, you will integrate technology into your classroom and this will enable students to build the vital technology skills and be empowered in their learning.

It's always refreshing when the focus shifts away from the transcript, grade or official piece of paper. An integrated teaching approach is ideal. Heck, any integrated approach is better.

I do not know what kind of America I will wake up to November 9. But I know that the future of America does not hinge on Election Day. What happens to the U.S. will be the cumulative effect of a Trump campaign that has mainstreamed bigotry and is now mainstreaming – or at least severely playing down – white supremacist violence.

Maria Del Mar Londoño's curator insight, April 15, 7:27 PM
I agree with the concept of homework seen as a policy more than a practice to develop more cognitive skill in students. The assignment of meaningful homework has been lost in the education field. It is seen more as a requirement for collecting grades than as a method for meaningful assessment that contributes not just to their learning process but also to their lives.
Ivon Prefontaine, PhD's curator insight, April 15, 8:09 PM
Do the students engage? Can parents help if necessary? I discovered if students were engaged in their homework and it was meaningful they found ways to get it done. If it lacked meaning, it did not get done or could not get done.

5 Steps to Create a Culture That Embraces Diversity

5 Steps to Create a Culture That Embraces Diversity | Banco de Aulas | Scoop.it
If you don’t embrace diversity, it’s kind of like not embracing technology,” said Mi’Shon Landry, director of supplier diversity for the central region at Zones Inc., a hardware, software and IT solutions supplier out of Auburn, Washington. By ignoring the importance of diversity in the workplace, “you’re going to get lost and left behind.”

According to projections by the U.S. Census Bureau, more than half of Americans will be part of a minority group by 2044. Also, by 2060, about 20 percent of the country will be foreign born. This inevitable diversity of the country means talent will reflect those demographics. If not, potential employees could shy away from a company, making it difficult to recruit talent.
