Why Kids Need to Move, Touch and Experience to Learn - Mind/Shift

Why Kids Need to Move, Touch and Experience to Learn - Mind/Shift | Banco de Aulas | Scoop.it
When students use their bodies in the learning process, it can have a big effect, even if it seems silly or unconnected to the learning goal at hand. Researchers have found that when students use their bodies while doing mathematical storytelling (like with word problems, for example), it changes the way they think about math. “We understand language in a richer, fuller way if we can connect it to the actions we perform,” said Sian Beilock, professor of psychology at the University of Chicago.

Powerful research!

Can we use the learning from this research as we think of creative ways to have students engage in the Science and Engineering Practices of NGSS?

Caron Goode's curator insight, March 27, 11:40 AM

Our bodies are designed to move. Even not in motion, the heart is beating, blood and lymph circulating, and we are breathing, seeing and processing. Movement fuels energy and insight.

Forty years ago there was deep concern that the population was breaking free of apathy and obedience. Since then, many measures have been taken to restore discipline.

Those in charge of the status quo and their minions do a lot of talking to hide the lack of actual freedom that occurs in schooling children.

I'm certain I am speaking for teachers everywhere when I say this: Pedagogy is a real thing. What teachers--and professors--do in their classes matters. It impacts learning, application and motivation.

Education Is A System; Teaching Is An Action; Learning Is A Process

Education Is A System; Teaching Is An Action; Learning Is A Process | Banco de Aulas | Scoop.it

“ Education Is A System; Teaching Is An Action; Learning Is A Process” I recently read Audrey Waters write about privilege in education. I always appreciate Waters’—and similarly, Jackie Gerstein’s–habit of asking difficult questions and presenting a perspective on education that doesn’t always come up in the PLC meeting, tweet chat, or utopian summit on school design. One of her points had to do with the inherent inaccessibility of education. The idea that those working from disadvantaged positions should adjust—repackage themselves to find “success” working with a “thing” not designed for them. It’s a fair argument that has as its evidence the continued expenditure of billions of dollars to push that “thing’s” lifeless body along in spite of itself.

Ours is an age of pedagogy. Anxious parents instruct their children more and more, at younger and younger ages, until they're reading books to babies in the womb. They pressure teachers to make kindergartens and nurseries more like schools.
