“Starbucks My Classroom” Project: The Master Plan

“Starbucks My Classroom” Project: The Master Plan | Banco de Aulas | Scoop.it

It’s the beginning of school year 2016/17. It is the morning of the first
day of the new school year. You’ve done this before, but this time it feels very different.

You woke up before the alarm on your phone went off. Though it was much earlier than the last two months got you used to, you woke up energized. Shower, coffee, breakfast, and everything in between - improbably, you did not drag your feet. You got on the road with time to spare.

Driving, you were deep in thought. You were smiling. Visualizing.
Anticipating.  As you enter the building you cannot help but smile. You open the door. You look around and you see it. This is the reason you were so eager to get back here.

You worked your ass off for it. You were a teacher possessed, a maniac on a  mission. Be proud.

All is quiet. It will not be like this for longer. You can’t wait!

You take it all in. You feel it. You know it will change things forever.

You enter your new classroom.

Hey! Thank you for all the support and overwhelming positive response to my  “Starbucks Classroom Manifesto.” I was pumped! Still am. So, I got to work  right away.

This would be beneficial to teachers as it gives ideas not only on how to design an effective learning space with examples from all over the world but why they could be effective.

“Children can educate themselves and are good at doing so if the conditions are right."

They also need guidance, in the ways put forward by both Piaget and Vygotsky.

Materials in the form of educational toys, games, books, where they can make their own selections are crucial.

Children, with appropriate guidance, can provide insight and direction for their learning. They usually know what they like and what they do not like. The key is to elicit information which helps to bring what they want to fruition. I think educators are afraid of these conversations.

The 21st century pedagogy teachers should be aware of

The 21st century pedagogy teachers should be aware of | Banco de Aulas | Scoop.it

The skills that are pivotal to achieve the 21st century pedagogy goals are :

- Critical thinking

- Active learning

- Problem solving skills

- Communicating, making connections, creating and expressing oneself in a variety of ways

- Contextualized knowledge. As you can see in the learning pyramid , uncontextualized and non-activity based learning could result in a low retention rate.

- Collaborative team work. This is mainly achieved through web2.0 technologies and social networking tools .

If you have read the UNESCO’S publication “ The four pillars of education “ you would realize that collaboration is the core element of the four pillars which are :

-Learning to know

- Lerning to do

- Learning to live together

- Learning to be

Many principals I worked for might want to print this and put somewhere visible. The two that get missed frequently are that school is about people not programs and keeping relationships in good repair.

Why What We Are Teaching Is Wrong and What We Should Do About It

Why What We Are Teaching Is Wrong and What We Should Do About It | Banco de Aulas | Scoop.it

I am going to share with you the five main answers that my students came up with to the question “What is wrong with the curriculum in your school?”.

1. I don’t know why I am learning any of this.

2. I don’t want to learn about X. I want to learn about Y.

3. European History leaves out the history of millions of other people.

4. The textbooks are from 1987.

5. None of this feels relevant. I don’t get how to apply it to my life.
