Bahrain's main opposition quits national dialogue | World | Reuters | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it
DUBAI (Reuters) - Bahrain's largest Shi'ite opposition group Wefaq said on Sunday it planned to pull out of a national dialogue, which was aimed at reforms after mass pro-democracy protests rocked the Gulf Island...

"Wefaq tried with all seriousness to offer political solutions and it was always responded to with rejections, or it was ignored," he said.

Mainstream opposition groups such as Wefaq have called for a more representative parliamentary system and greater powers to the elected lower council, whose powers are neutered by the upper Shura council, appointed by the king.

But hardliners calling for the abolition of the monarchy have gained popularity since the crackdown by Bahrain's Sunni rulers. Security forces crushed weeks of protests in March led by the country's majority Shi'ite population, who were demanding a greater say in government.

UAE: End Trial of Activists Charged With Insulting Officials | Human Rights Watch

UAE: End Trial of Activists Charged With Insulting Officials | Human Rights Watch | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it
(London) - UAE authorities should drop charges against five activists arrested after they called for democratic reforms, four international human rights organizations said today.
....
In this day and age, with all that is going on in the region, it is disturbing and absurd that the UAE is prosecuting activists simply because they spoke out for democracy. The international community should end its silence and condemn this mockery of justice; the government had no business arresting these men in the first place.

White House welcomes Dalai Lama, China irked | The Raw Story | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it
WASHINGTON/BEIJING (Reuters) - China accused the United States on Saturday of "grossly" interfering in its internal affairs and damaging relations after President Barack Obama met exiled Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama at the White House.
Obama met the Nobel Prize laureate for some 45 minutes, praising him for embracing non-violence while reiterating that the United States did not support independence for Tibet.
"(Obama) is naturally showing some concern for basic human values, human rights, religious freedom," the Dalai Lama said after the meeting, according to Saunders. "Naturally, he shows genuine concern about the suffering in Tibet and also other places," she quoted the Dalai Lama as saying.

The Dalai Lama is in Washington for the 11-day Kalachakra ritual, the first time the ritual has been held in the U.S. capital. The days of meditation and teachings aim to inspire inner peace as a means of reducing conflict around the world.

Following a press briefing organised by the Irish delegation of medical, political and human rights figures at the end of their visit to Bahrain on 14 July 2011 the journalist Ms Reem Khalifa was surrounded by pro-Government protesters and abused and harassed. The protesters then called the police and claimed one of their number had been struck on the jaw. Eye witnesses to the encounter have testified that no person was struck and that it was Ms Reem Khalifa who was the victim of harassment and that she then walked away from the confrontation in the hotel lobby

Preparing for a new Libya

Preparing for a new Libya | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it
FAR TOO TIMID in its response to the Arab Spring, the Obama administration lately has shown welcome signs of greater assertiveness. This week the president and secretary of state finally declared Syria’s Bashar al-Assad an illegitimate ruler after the U.S. ambassador in Damascus made a high-profile visit to the besieged city of Hama. White House counterterrorism chief John Brennan traveled to Saudi Arabia last weekend to tell Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh that U.S. aid depends on his agreement to step down.

US should recognize the Transitional National Council as the rightful Government of Libya!

The hinges of life and death swing. The door opens wide and shuts tight. Darkness and stillness on one side. Light and possible freedom on the other. There is no threshold of decision here. Who lives and who dies in Palestine is not a matter of choice or chance, it is a matter of occupation, brutal oppression, persistent restraints, and constant bombing and sniping.

Maryam Al-Khawaja, the 24-year-old director of foreign relations for the Bahrain Center for Human Rights, is one of the few Bahrani activists speaking about the uprising outside the borders of the tiny, oil-rich island nation.
..." The regime is going to try and play a very smart game-- cracking down as severely as possible, and then suddenly making very artificial progress, which is what they’re doing right now by releasing a few prisoners, stopping the torture, allowing family visitations. But the youth are not buying into it this time. They remember what happened in 2001 – it’s not that long ago. They say, ‘You know what? Even if you’re going to make these artificial changes, we’re still going to protest and demand our rights.’
