King of Bahrain failing to restore country's reputation after uprising - Telegraph

King of Bahrain failing to restore country's reputation after uprising - Telegraph | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it
The King of Bahrain's attempts to restore his island's reputation after a bloody crackdown on opposition protests are crumbling from political attack and repeated allegations of police brutality even from members of the island's middle classes.
...

The government's National Dialogue, its forum for negotiation with opposition groups, lay in tatters yesterday after al-Wefaq, the biggest party in parliament, announced it intended to pull out.

Meanwhile, two of the most prominent figures detained in the crackdown have described to The Daily Telegraph a routine of beatings they suffered while in captivity.

One, Ayat al-Qurmezi ....

The other, a senior surgeon at the main Salmaniya Hospital, who has asked not to be identified, said the behaviour of the authorities had alienated the non-political middle classes like himself. He was one of 48 doctors put on trial in the wake of the protests, 20 of whom remain in custody.

He said he was hit round the head, kicked and beaten with a rubber hose until he was forced to confess to inflicting the wounds suffered by protesters he was treating for their injuries, or making them worse.

Acts of sacrilege, rape, torture and murder in Bahrain | SHOAH

Acts of sacrilege, rape, torture and murder in Bahrain | SHOAH | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it
Saudi troops rushed to Bahrain on March 13 have indulged in wanton acts of vandalism and sacrilege. Masjids have been attacked and destroyed and copies of the Qur’an trampled upon. Muslims rightly take great offense at disrespect to the noble Qur’an as has been witnessed in the case of the extremist American Christian pastor, Terry Jones in Florida whose act of sacrilege has been condemned worldwide. Yet there is near total silence about the Saudis’ acts of sacrilege and desecrations in Bahrain.

Saudi-led sacrilege in Bahrain | The Shia Post

Saudi-led sacrilege in Bahrain | The Shia Post | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it
Newly-released footages from Bahrain show a vandalized mosque, which has been attacked by the Saudi Arabia-backed Bahraini forces.
The forces attacked the Imam Sadeq mosque in Diraz village — a major mosque in the Persian Gulf island — on Thursday, desecrating copies of the Holy Qur’an and damaging electronic devices.

Regime forces have raided dozens of mosques, schools, sacred sites and even graves in persisting efforts to suppress all opposition since mid-February’s launch of a popular revolution against the regime.

PressTV - Cleric slams Qur'an sacrilege in Bahrain | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it
“They (Saudi and Bahraini troops) set fire to Qur'ans and destroyed nearly 30 major mosques,” he said about the unfortunate incident.

The remarks come as new footage coming out of Bahrain shows the continued destruction of mosques and brutal crackdown on protesters by the Saudi-backed forces of the Persian Gulf state.

Bahrain's main opposition party, al-Wefaq, says that over 30 holy sites have been destroyed since the anti-regime protests began in mid-February.

Canadian Citizen Tortured in Bahrain… But Harper Government Keeps Silent

Canadian Citizen Tortured in Bahrain… But Harper Government Keeps Silent | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it
A young Canadian man suffering from a serious heart condition has been abducted and tortured by the Bahraini regime ¬– yet the government of Prime Minister Stephen Harper has maintained a steadfast silence over his plight.

This lack of action by the Harper government is in spite of the fact that the Canadian Consuls in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia are fully aware of the case. The official silence may be due to a bilateral trade deal Canada is in the process of completing with the Bahraini regime, and also Ottawa’s increasing subordinance to Washington’s foreign policy and therefore unwillingness to upset an important US ally in the Persian Gulf.

Poet jailed in protests claims she was beaten by Bahraini royal

Poet jailed in protests claims she was beaten by Bahraini royal | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it
A female member of the al-Khalifa royal family in Bahrain has been accused of repeatedly beating the 20-year-old student poet Ayat al-Gormezi when she was in prison accused of reciting a poem at a pro-democracy protest rally criticising the monarchy.

In an interview with The Independent, Ms Gormezi, who became a symbol of resistance to oppression in Bahrain, said that although her interrogators had tried to blindfold her, "I was able to see a woman of about 40 in civilian clothes who was beating me on the head with a baton". Ms Gormezi later described her interrogator to prison guards, who, she said, promptly named the woman as being one of the al-Khalifas with a senior position in the Bahraini security service.

"I was taken many times to her office for fresh beatings," Ms Gormezi said. "She would say, 'You should be proud of the al-Khalifas. They are not going to leave this country. It is their country.' "
