The Stream - Bahrain: The social media battle continues - Suhail Algosaibi & Zainab Al-Khawaja

The battle over Bahrain's future is raging online between government loyalists and opposition supporters. The Stream hosted a debate between Zainab Al-Khawaja and Suhail Algosaibi....

Suhail sounded like a regime troll, Zainab sounded like a humanrights activist/democracy reformer!  I flowed all arguments to Zainab's rebuttals and give her the victory!    Very brave, to call for the arrest of the Khalifas for crimes against humanity on camera from within Bahrain!  WOW!

Excellent...a must watch!

Emir makes himself king of 'democratic' Bahrain

Emir makes himself king of 'democratic' Bahrain | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

Bahrain has been ruled by the al-Khalifa family, which adheres to the Sunni branch of Islam, since 1783. The present Emir came to power in 1999 on the death of his father, a despotic ruler who ruled over one of the most repressive regimes in the region. In the Nineties he made a brutal crackdown on a campaign against discrimination by Shia Muslims, the underclass majority in Bahrain.

In the 18 months of Sheikh Hamad's rule he has freed political prisoners, dismantled the hated state security police, invited exiled dissidents – many in Britain since the Seventies – to return to form opposition parties, and appointed women to a consultative shura

Bahrain monument gone, but grievances linger - The National | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it
Six months on, the Pearl Roundabout, where tens of thousands of Bahrainis converged to demand reforms, is gone but the problems that provoked the protests linger.

"We know it is difficult, but at least the government and the prime minister should be changed and all those who did this should be punished by the law," she said, referring to those she believes were responsible for the estimated 35 deaths since the crisis began.

Education International - Bahrain: Release detained teacher union leaders

Education International - Bahrain: Release detained teacher union leaders | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

EI, together with Amnesty International, urgently calls on its member organisations to appeal for the release of Jalila al-Salman and Mahdi 'Issa Mahdi Abu Dheeb, Vice-President and President of the Bahraini Teachers Association (BTA) arrested along with several other board members of the BTA. While we understand their colleagues have been released, Jalila al-Salman and Mahdi 'Issa Mahdi Abu Dheeb remain incarcerated awaiting trial in a civilian court. EI also condemns government’s action to dissolve the BTA and replace its leaders with others more amenable to the regime.

The obvious bias in Western and GCC media's reporting about the situation in Syria as compared to language used in reporting parallel events in their own countries has prompted Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Naqdi, Commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard's Basij Forces, to declare his organization's readiness to deploy peacekeeping forces to London, Liverpool and Birmingham should the unrest in Great Britain drag on.

The Associated Press: Bahrain forces block roads to former protest hub

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Witnesses say security forces in Bahrain's capital are blocking roads around a former protest hub after clashes with anti-government demonstrators in the Gulf island kingdom.
Witnesses say tanks and police vehicles surrounded Pearl Square, which had been the centerpiece for Shiite-led protests calling for greater rights from Sunni rulers in the strategic nation, which is home to the U.S. Navy's 5th Fleet. ...
The blockades Thursday came after protesters in a Manama neighborhood called for a march back to Pearl Square, which was stormed by security forces several weeks after pro-reform demonstrations began in February.
Major protests have been crushed, but small-scale clashes have occurred nearly nightly for weeks.
