Arab Spring gives US a new chance in the Middle East - The National

Arab Spring gives US a new chance in the Middle East - The National | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

Barack Obama has not faced the continuing revolutions in the Arab world with any passion. Rather, the US president has often behaved as if these were annoying intrusions into his domestic agenda. Yet change has come, and whether Mr Obama likes it or not this will alter Middle Eastern attitudes toward the United States.

Mr Obama has been lucky - not a bad thing for a politician. The president has avoided taking the lead amid regional convulsions, failing to exploit openings to Washington's advantage. He has not even outlined a strategy defining American interests and aims, beyond the generalities in his speech at the State Department last May. And yet the US administration has almost everywhere managed to fall on its two feet, with limited negative consequences. Those who predicted that the Arab Spring would be a disaster for the US have so far been proven wrong.

Front Line believes all charges against health professionals who have been targeted because of their work for human rights should be dropped, he said.

Senator Averil Power (FF) travelled to Bahrain with Front Line to protest against the imprisonment of the medics including Dr Ali Al Ekr, Dr Basim Dhaif and Dr Ghassan Dhaif, who trained at the Royal College of Surgeons in Dublin. “I welcome the news that Dr Rula Al Saffar and Jalila al Salman have now been released. However, 10 medics remain in custody and another has been transferred to hospital after suffering a ruptured brain aneurism. Our delegation will continue to campaign for their release,” she said.

Bahraini forces attack pro-democracy protesters

Cleric says PGCC rulers observing double standards

A senior Shia cleric in Bahrain has said that Sunni rulers from the Persian Gulf Cooperation Council (PGCC) are showing double standards by supporting Arab uprisings elsewhere while aiding Bahrain's crackdown on its pro-reform protests, AP reported.

Sheik Isa Qassim said on Friday the calls for greater rights in Bahrain are being ignored by Persian Gulf neighbors that have backed other revolts, such as those in Syria and Libya.

Qassim's Friday sermon did not cite specific countries, but Saudi Arabia leads a Persian Gulf military force supporting Bahrain's Sunni rulers. Last week, Saudi Arabia strongly denounced Syrian President Bashar al-Assad for trying to crush protesters.

Qatar, meanwhile, has led Persian Gulf aid to Libyan rebels.

The protesters slammed the government’s indifference towards the issue and chanted anti-US slogans. They described Aafia as the daughter of the whole Muslim world and said every Muslim country should raise its voice to get her released.
In a written letter presented during the protest, Aafia’s mother appealed to the US and Pakistani governments to make possible the release of her daughter before Eid, a move that could also stable the US economy and strengthen the relation between the two countries.

DUBAI, Aug 24 (Reuters) - Bahrain's largest Shi'ite opposition group Wefaq said it would miss Wednesday's deadline to register for by-elections for the 18 parliamentary seats it quit in protest at a government crackdown on mostly Shi'ite demonstrators this year.

"The core issue is that the legislative authority does not exist any more," Khalil al-Marzouq, a former Wefaq lawmaker, explaining why the bloc would not contest the Sept. 24 polls.

‘Civilians should never be tried before military courts’ - Malcolm Smart

The Bahraini authorities’ decision to try two prominent women activists in a military court is a backward step and raises concerns that they will not receive a fair trial, Amnesty International said today.

Roula al-Saffar, head of the Bahrain Nursing Society, and Jalila al-Salman, vice-president of the Bahrain Teachers' Association, have been released on bail after being detained for several months for their involvement in pro-reform protests.

Roula al-Saffar will be tried next Sunday together with 13 other medical workers before the National Safety Court, a military court, although she and Jalila al-Salman, who will be tried by the same court the following day, are both civilians.

Bahrain Government Makes U—Turn on Military Courts | Human Rights First

Bahrain Government Makes U—Turn on Military Courts | Human Rights First | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

“The world needs to take notice that the government of Bahrain has brought back its discredited military courts, which is further evidence that meaningful reform in that country is an illusion,” said Human Rights First’s Brian Dooley. “I met with many people in Bahrain last month who had been told their cases would now be heard in civilian instead of military courts. They were lied to.”
More than a dozen doctors and other medical professionals have been summoned to appear before the military court on Sunday August 28, even though the Bahraini authorities announced on June 26 that they were transferring all cases from military courts to civilian courts.
