UN demands Bahrain release prisoners detained for exercising freedom of speech

UN demands Bahrain release prisoners detained for exercising freedom of speech | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

0 August 2011 – The United Nations today demanded the release of Bahraini civilians who may have been arrested during recent anti-Government protests merely for exercising their rights to freedom of speech, and called for civilian trials for those whose cases go forward.
“We stress that civilians must be tried in civilian courts and that every detained person must be charged with a recognizable criminal offence, with adequate access to a lawyer and enough time to prepare a defence,” UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) spokesperson Rupert Colville told a news briefing in Geneva, noting that at least 264 cases remain pending, many of which may be tried in the Court of National Safety, effectively a military court.

freedomhouse.org: Freedom Alert - 'The Martyr of Eid'

freedomhouse.org: Freedom Alert - 'The Martyr of Eid' | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

14-year-old Ali Jawad Ahmad was killed during a peaceful demonstration in Bahrain on August 31 when security forces used excessive force and threw a tear gas canister at his head, according to his family and activists. ...

Yet activists blame security forces and are mourning Ahmad’s death by staging large-scale protests across the country.

More than thirty-two people have been killed and thousands detained since demonstrations began in February. Crackdowns have targeted anti-government activists, particularly Shiites who make up 70 percent of the population and have faced discrimination from the Sunni monarchy. Many protesters have been threatened, lost their jobs or homes, or been prevented from continuing their studies. The UN Human Rights Council added Bahrain to a list of countries to further scrutinize for human rights violations, since the government has taken extreme measures to silence both critics and journalists attempting to provide information to the outside world. An Independent Commission of Inquiry was established to investigate human rights abuses, and will release its findings in October 2011.

Freedom House is horrified at Ahmad’s death, and calls for a full investigation into the circumstances behind it. The Bahraini government must end its efforts to persecute those who have demonstrated for political reform.

Opposition sees future without U.S. fleet - Washington Times | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

The leader of this island kingdom’s largest opposition party says that a future, democratic Middle East would eliminate the need for the U.S. Navy in the Persian Gulf.

“I believe that a democratic system inherently guarantees long-term stability and allows achieving cooperation between democracies,” said Ali Salman, secretary-general of the Wefaq National Islamic Society.

“If this region sees the emergence of a democratic order, I think there will be real stability in the medium- and long-term. There would be no need for any [foreign] forces to be present to guarantee the flow of oil.”

World leaders urge Libya reconciliation - Africa - Al Jazeera English | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

The countries meeting in Paris in support of Libya's rebel interim government agreed to unblock $15bn in frozen Libyan funds immediately, the French president said.

"We are committed to returning to the Libyans the monies of yesterday for the building of tomorrow."

The leaders insisted on the need for Libyans themselves to lead the way forward and to avoid the lessons learned in Iraq, where the fall of Saddam Hussein was followed by years of sectarian violence.

Bahrain: US Ally Kills Children… So When Is NATO Intervening?

Bahrain: US Ally Kills Children… So When Is NATO Intervening? | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

For several weeks since the Bahraini regime’s initiative of so-called “national dialogue” failed to engage opposition groups, there has been a massive stepping up of indiscriminate use of tear gas in villages deemed to be supportive of the mainly Shia-led pro-democracy movement.

Riot police have attacked villages on a daily and nightly basis, firing tear gas into homes. Families have had to flee their dwellings in the middle of the night, sometimes by carrying children out of bedroom windows using ladders. Those unable to move – disabled, sick and elderly – have been trapped indoors during these attacks and some have died from acute exposure to the tear gas. The youngest victim was five-year-old Mohammed Farhan [1].

Pro-democracy sources have labelled the deployment of tear gas as a deliberate tactic of “toxic terrorism”. It is the regime’s way of coercing the opposition groups to enter the dialogue process – which the opposition has dismissed as an empty public relations exercise designed to shore up the status quo of the Al Khalifa dynasty.

Andrew Anderson added "The arrest of such a large number of doctors and nurses has not happened in any country in the world, this is horrific in Bahrain", stressing that the medical staff do not threaten security in Bahrain and there is no reason for their continued presence in prison.

The "Front Line for Human rights" organization deputy continued saying "We have met many of the medical staff and we heard that they had been subjected to the worst kind of torture and everyone of them is in a state of shock due to the style of the torture they were subjected to", pointing out that the crisis is still ongoing and that the pressure is still ongoing against the citizens because of their participation in the protests.

Jailed Bahrain doctors on hunger strike

Jailed Bahrain doctors on hunger strike | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

A GROUP of Bahraini doctors on trial for alleged terrorism have begun a hunger strike in protest at their treatment, amid claims they have been tortured in custody.

The 14 men began their protest on Tuesday after being denied bail last week by a military court. Relatives say the health of several of the doctors has deteriorated rapidly and they are not receiving adequate medical treatment.

"One doctor has a cerebral aneurism, another has severe injuries from torture. Another man is suffering badly from diabetes. Now they are all on hunger strike their condition will only get worse," said a relative.

The doctors are charged with turning a hospital into a terrorist base as thousands of protesters took to the streets across the island kingdom in February, demanding democratic reforms from the ruling al-Khalifa family.

These munitions are not to be shot at people directly.  They are to be lobbed in the direction of people in a high arc,  like a mortar.  It is clearly a malicious act, to shoot directly at someone, to shoot at them at close range, and to shoot them in the back of the head.  Obviously Ali was not threatening, he was 14 years of age, and had his back to his murderer!

Statement by the spokesperson of EU High Representative Catherine Ashton on ongoing trials in Bahrain’s National Safety Courts | Bahrain Center for Human Rights | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

Many cases remain in the hands of the ‘Court of National Safety’, set up in the wake of the antigovernment protests this spring. These include those of members of both the medical and teaching professions. The High Representative is of the firm belief that civilians must be tried in civilian courts, with due process, so that their full rights to a fair trial are upheld. The High Representative urges the authorities in Bahrain to follow through on their commitments and bring the use of these courts – and the harsh sentences they have produced – to an immediate end.”
