Middle East Online::Ignoring Genocide: Rohingya People Deserve to Live

ASEAN must break away from its silence and tediously guarded policies and western countries must be confronted by their own civil societies: no normalization with Rangoon when innocent men, women and children are being burned alive in their own homes, writes Ramzy Baroud.

Middle East Online

One fails to understand the unperturbed attitude with which regional and international leaders and organizations are treating the unrelenting onslaught against Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar, formally known as Burma. Numbers speak of atrocities where every violent act is prelude to greater violence and ethnic cleansing. Yet, western governments’ normalization with the Myanmar regime continues unabated, regional leaders are as gutless as ever and even human rights organizations seem compelled by habitual urges to issue statements lacking meaningful, decisive and coordinated calls for action.

But Nabeel Rajab, President of the Bahrain Center for Human Rights, rebuked Ghaith and estimated that more than 250 prisoners were now refusing food.

“There are hundreds of them, it is not correct that the number is falling. We have a history of the interior ministry misleading people and giving out false information,” he told Al-Akhbar.

“Nobody in Bahrain believes anything coming out of this ministry.”

UN: Navi Pillay seeks immediate release of all prisoners of conscience in Bahrain! | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

GENEVA (21 December 2011) – UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay on Wednesday called on authorities in Bahrain to take immediate steps to address the “deepening mistrust” between the Government and civil society, including by promptly releasing those detained for taking part in peaceful demonstrations.

“The Bahraini authorities need to urgently take confidence-building measures including unconditionally releasing those who were convicted in military tribunals or are still awaiting trial for merely exercising their fundamental rights to freedom of expression and assembly,” Pillay said.

“Thousands of individuals have lost their jobs for participating in demonstrations, many students have had their education derailed - these serious violations of their economic and social rights must be immediately addressed. Those who have been unfairly dismissed should be reinstated to their original functions.”

Pillay also urged the Government to address the prevailing impunity at all levels, including for security forces responsible for excessive use of force on peaceful protestors and officers who perpetrated torture, sometimes with fatal consequences, in detention centres.

“We continue to receive reports of the repression of small protests in Bahrain and although some security officers have reportedly been arrested, we have yet to see any prosecution of security forces for civilian injuries and deaths,” she said. “Such impunity – at all levels – is a serious impediment to national reconciliation.”

"We continue to receive credible reports of excessive force by police, including widespread and sometimes indiscriminate use of tear gas," said Assistant Secretary of State Michael Posner.

"We urge Bahraini authorities to ensure compliance with international doctrines of necessity and proportionality."

Posner also said in a statement that charges against those accused of offences related to political expression should be dropped and peaceful protests allowed to go ahead.

Fourteen opposition figures convicted of leading the protests are in jail, some serving life sentences.

Opposition parties, which this week launched a week-long sit-in to put pressure on the government, have said their protests will not stop until the ruling Al Khalifa family ends its monopoly on power and the 14 are released.

Bahrain said to drop free-speech cases after protests

The measure, part of a review of action by military courts set up after Bahrain announced martial law in March, applies to 43 cases and 343 defendants, public prosecutor Ali al-Buainain told the state news agency BNA.

"However, other cases will remain pending because they involve crimes of violence and sabotage against people and property," Buainain said.

An official at the largest Shi'ite opposition group, Wefaq, said about 85 percent of the cases it studied were linked to freedom of speech and assembly.

"Of the 1,200 cases we have reported about, 1,000 include charges such as illegal assembly, spreading false news and spreading hatred of the regime," Matar Matar, a former parliament member for Wefaq, told Reuters.

Matar also said the measure should allow those charged to seek compensation.

"These people were imprisoned and there was no justification for what happened to them. So there should be compensation and an investigation of those responsible,"
