Reports of what actually took place in the Central Myanmar town of Meiktila are still emerging. Muslim refugees are beginning to speak out and tell the world of what they witnessed with their own eyes. “They beat them in front of me. I was watching. I can still see it.” Noor Bi, is crying as she describes the moment when she saw her husband and brother murdered in front of her eyes as she fled Meiktila. This latest attack on Muslims came on 20th March in Meiktila, Burma, which is just 50 miles from the Burmese capital and is a military base. The mob out numbered the police and they were unable to protect the Muslim minority of the town. The 26-year-old is now a widow with a three-year-old son. As she told her story and what she witnessed, the people around her in the make shift refugee camp now set up in the grounds of a Muslim school in Yindaw, began to cry. Grown men sobbed at hearing her ordeal. “They beat them and beat them, they were still alive when they threw my husband and brother in the fire. They were burnt alive.” Tears stream down her face as she continues to relay her account. “Once they had finished, they told us to bow down to them. We bowed down towards Mecca, but they started to beat us.” Noor pauses and then seems reluctant to tell the next part of her ordeal. “The police asked the monks and the mob to stop beating us and that they would ensure that we would bow down to the monks.” The faces of the other people listening clearly show their disgust at what she described. “They made us worship them. That is why we lived on that day,” she looks to the ground, not wanting to make eye contact with me or anyone else. No one blames her; Muslims only bow down in prayer to God, but this was life or death, the IDPs around her, men and women, young and old, all of them Muslim, understand this more than anyone.

Myanmar's government has violated at least eight international laws with its treatment of the Rohingya Muslims, one of the world's most persecuted minorities, according to a British-based advocacy group. Burma Campaign UK slammed the progressive president Thein Sein for policies of oppression applied exclusively to the Rohingya. The minority group is considered stateless under Burma's citizenship law of 1982. Legal constraints render it "almost impossible" for the Rohingya to be recognised as citizens of the country. "This violates the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the Convention on the Rights of the Child and international norms prohibiting discrimination of racial and religious minorities," says the report. .,..

These barbarous acts are being carried out by Neo-Nazi racist groups like the RNDP (Rakhine Nationalities Development Party), ALA (Arakan Liberation Army), NaSaKa border police and 969 monks led by Monk Wirathu, the self proclaimed Bin Laden of Buddhism. The Government of Myanmar is at best ignoring the slaughter of these people, just like the rest of the international community, and at worst is participating in the crimes. The persecution of the Rohingya people is severe. The Burmese junta considers them to be sub-human and denies them almost all basic human rights. Often they are subject to torture, gang rape, starvation, slave labor, and forced to reside in the most dire camps in the world – some call these refugee camps but they are concentration camps.....
A Burmese parliamentary investigation has confirmed that police used phosphorus smoke bombs during clashes with protesters last year outside a controversial China-backed copper mine.
Dozens of protesters were burned, some severely, by an incendiary crowd-control device described at the time as "fire balls" that were launched during the November demonstration against the military-operated Letpedaung copper mine..... A report by the Burma Lawyers Network and the U.S.-based rights group Justice Trust alleged that police used military-issued white phosphorus to violently disperse the protest.
Nearly 1,000 Muslim Rohingyas, including women and children as young as ten, remain incarcerated in northern Arakan state – accused of inciting sectarian clashes last year – where campaigners say they are subject to “pervasive” abuses and at least 68 people are believed to have died in custody. New data obtained by DVB shows that torture and violence, including the sexual exploitation of minors, is widespread throughout prisons in northern Arakan state, where at least 966 Rohingyas have been detained since November last year. At least 10 women and 72 children, aged between 10 and 15 years old, are understood to be among the prisoners.....

... Upon a closer and honest look, Myanmar's extraordinary reforms begin to lose their lustre. There is no denying that the country's quasi-civilian government has ushered in a new era of reforms. However, the types of reforms that President Thein Sein, an ex-general and a figurehead, are pursuing are ones that will protect the military's core interests above all else. At heart, the reforms are largely geared towards creating a "late developmental state" along the lines of Vietnam and China, a benign Leviathan that will secure the generals' electability on the basis of its economic performance and along popular "Buddhist" racism. When the illiberal society's deeply ingrained racism thunders the traditionally liberal discourses of human rights, democracy and multi-culturalism go muted. The current reform movement therefore lacks real potential to result in a new democratic polity which will build, and in turn feed off, a new and sustainable economic system. Sadly, the West and the rest alike are choosing to overlook the apparent pitfalls of Myanmar's reforms ignoring the cries of the wretched in a new Myanmar. ....

...The recent reports in media exposed that violence against Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar is leading to the death of hundreds of Muslims. Countless Muslims have been injured and their property destroyed in Rohingya. The present outbreak in Myanmar between Buddhist and Muslim has led to fresh killings and destruction; many were killed in the attempt to flee to Bangladesh and other neighboring countries, which is grave violation of human rights and humanitarian law. The persistent persecution of Rohingya Muslim in Myanmar is totally unacceptable, against principles of humanity and justice. We believe that the OIC, being the collective voice of Muslim world should play its role and take firm steps for improving Rohingya Muslims status in Myanmar and send clear diplomatic message to the Muslim world to unite and safeguard the rights of Rohingya Muslims...

It's been three years since I reported on the plight of the Rohingya Muslim people of western Myanmar and neighboring Bangladesh. We called our documentary "A Forgotten People," and it looked at appalling incidents where boatloads of refugees fleeing poverty and persecution arrived in Thailand only to be towed back out to sea and abandoned by the Thai security forces. Many Rohingya people are attempting dangerous voyages to Bangladesh and Thailand, but most are sent back on arrival... First one body appeared, floating in the waters of the Bay of Bengal, then another, and another, until those on board the little fishing boat that had gone to their rescue began to lose count. Those bobbing lifeless among the waves had set out the night before, so desperate to escape the growing sectarian violence in Burma that they were prepared to risk boarding the dangerously overcrowded boat. At least 130 had clambered aboard, but the boat foundered – whether it capsized because of the weight of bodies or because it struck rocks remains unclear. ...
