A Bahrain regime court ruled Saturday that prominent rights activist Maryam al-Khawaja be kept behind bars for an extra 10 days despite a UN call for her release, her lawyer said.

The Bahraini co-director of the Gulf Centre for Human Rights, who also has Danish nationality, was arrested on August 30 on arrival in Manama in connection with an alleged assault on a police officer at the airport.
Her lawyer Mohammed al-Jishi told AFP that the judge ordered that Khawaja be kept in custody on the same “charge”.

Kiev's War Against Freedom of Speech. Ukraine: The Ugly Truth

Kiev's War Against Freedom of Speech. Ukraine: The Ugly Truth | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

"...

Such events have become part of everyday life for the inhabitants of Donbass. Independent cameramen are trying to bring the truth to the Ukrainian and Western public but this is no easy task.

Firstly, it is very difficult to publish the videos, because internet connection is now a luxury for Donbass. The Ukrainian army has destroyed not only electricity plants but water pipes and gas lines as well.

Secondly, Ukrainian forces are arresting journalists and people making videos, and treating them as criminals. Kiev has unleashed a real war against freedom of speech. Any video or text criticizing the Ukrainian government is considered as “support for Donbass terrorists.” Making such videos means risking your life or freedom.

This affects journalists beyond Donbass as well. The Security Service of Ukraine (the equivalent of the American FBI) pays regular visits to intractable reporters and throws them in prison with no scruples. Recently my empty apartment in Kirovograd was visited by agents of the Security Service of Ukraine. I was lucky enough to be in Russia but my neighbors were questioned about me.

The desire to smash any kind of resistance in the country has become an obsession of the Ukrainian authorities. The declaration recently made by the head of Ukrainian Officers’ Union, Evgeniy Lupakov, where he said he wanted to hang the “Donbass terrorists” on street poles, is of utmost importance and direst foreboding."

Maryam al-Khawaja, who campaigns against abuse in Gulf state, charged with insulting king and assault on arrival.

The prominent Bahrain human rights activist and critic of the ruling family, Maryam al-Khawaja, has been arrested by authorities on her arrival at the Gulf state's airport.

Posts on the Twitter account of Khawaja said she had been charged with insulting the king, assaulting police officers, and faced charges for her involvement with the rights campaign, Wanted For Justice.

Khawaja, the co-director of the Gulf Centre for Human Rights, is the daughter of Shia Muslim activist Abdulhadi Abdulla Hubail al-Khawaja, who has been in custody in Bahrain since 2011 and is on hunger strike.

The Reuters news agency reported her mother Khadija al-Musawi as saying her daughter would be transferred to the public prosecution court on Sunday.

A later post on her Twitter account stated that she would be held for seven days and was not allowed to see a lawyer before her interrogation.

Khawaja, who has lived abroad for several years, had returned to Bahrain to see her father, who recently decided to go on a new hunger strike. Her sister, Zainab, had been released from custody on Friday pending further investigation.

Pakistan demands self-determination for Kashmir but has occupied Balochistan: Hyrbiar Marri - Viewpointonline

Pakistan demands self-determination for Kashmir but has occupied Balochistan: Hyrbiar Marri - Viewpointonline | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it
‘As you know there are many in Balochistan. They believe that Balochistan’s occupation is being maintained through the barrel of gun; hence, Balochistan liberation will also flow through the barrel of gun,’ says Hyrbiar Marri. Son of the late Khair Bux Marri, Hyrbiar is a known spokesperson for Baluchistan national struggle. Read on:

Basically what in your view is Balochistan’s problem?

In 1947 when Balochistan got independence and it stayed independent for nine months, Pakistan’s founding father, Muhammad Ali Jinnah wanted our Khan to accede to Pakistan. The Khan sought the advice of the Baloch parliament. The House of Lords as well as the House of Commons advised the Khan against accession to Pakistan. The parliament believed that being an independent country, with a distinct culture and language, Balochistan should not accede to Pakistan merely on religious grounds. On March 27, 1948 Pakistan invaded Balochistan whereupon the Khan was forced to sign the treaty of accession. The Baloch did not want it. Accession to Pakistan was secured under duress. The Baloch nation has refused to accept the forced accession. We believe we are an occupied land. We view Pakistan as an occupying force. We want the world to know that it was an illegal occupation of Baloch land. We want the international community to support us in the way it lent support to Kuwait against Iraqi occupation.

Impartial nations and Human Rights Organisations should help Baloch and Kurds to get UN representation: Hyrbyair Marri

...Baloch pro-freedom leader Hyrbyair Marri said that Pakistan has started indefinite barbarism in New Kahan Quetta Balochistan and Pakistani security forces are continuously terrorising innocent Baloch in their efforts to suppress Baloch voice for freedom. He said on going raids in New Kahan Quetta, abduction of hundreds of people and loot and plunder of houses are continuation of state’s conspiracy.

He said there are different measurements for human rights and humanity in the world. “The entire Arab world is crying for Palestine because the Palestinians speak the same language as them. On the other hand the Arab World is not only silent over Pakistan’s barbarism against Balochistan but they are helping Pakistan in its human rights violations against Baloch people,” he said.

He said similarly the whole world raises their voice about atrocities against Yazidi community in Iraq because they are scared of religious extremists of ISIS but when Pakistan indiscriminately attacks and bombs Balochistan the entire civilised world ignores it.

Hyrbyair Marri said: “Pakistani army is blatantly violating human rights in Balochistan and the only difference between them [army] and ISIS is that army commits crimes in uniform and the world supports them, but the Pakistani military’s ideology is same as that of Taliban and ISIS. The ISIS is massacring Yazidi and other communities in Iraq and in similar fashion Pakistani forces are involved in extra-judicial abductions, killings and military operations in Balochistan with complete state immunity.

Mr Marri said that the international community takes notice of human rights violations in Palestine, Ukraine, and against Yazidi Community in Iraq but they turn a blind eye to Pakistani state barbarism against Baloch people and the their bloodshed in Balochistan.

He said that some UN member states are using their status to only protect their own individual interests and helping others on linguistic basis. Such states, he said, are occasional humanitarian – they only remember human rights if their own interests are at stake or if their linguistic partners are in trouble.

A declaration for Independence of Balochistan

Quetta/ Geneva, Sep 08: The largest and resource-rich province of Pakistan, Balochistan, celebrate August 11 as its `Independence Day’ and blames Pakistan for its illegal occupation since 1948. Facing poverty, unemployment, illiteracy and inequity, the people in Balochistan feel a deep sense of insecurity and disgruntlement against the Pakistan regime. Human rights violations have reached `epidemic proportions’ in the region. On August 11, 2014, Baloch nationalist leaders issued a written declaration demanding Balochistan’s independence. The declaration forwarded to the concerned authorities says that Pakistani armed forces have launched a campaign of ethnic cleansing and genocide in Balochistan, and are systematically kidnapping, imprisoning and murdering Baloch political activists, students, lawyers, intellectuals and nationalist leaders.

(Beirut) – Bahrain should provide victims of torture with physical and psychological rehabilitation, Human Rights Watch and other human rights groups said today, based on a letter they sent to King Hamad.....

Bahrain accepted the BICI’s finding that its security forces tortured people in 2011, so it should face up to its treaty obligation to help the victims recover. These 13 prisoners should not be in jail in the first place, but that doesn’t mean Bahrain can ignore its obligation to help them recover from torture by its security forces.

Rajab believes there are similarities between Bahrain and Ireland in their shared struggles for democracy, justice and equality. “You were ruled by the British; we are ruled by a family who invaded the country 200 years ago and treated the indigenous population badly. [The government] marginalised people, put them in jail.”

He says that because Ireland achieved democracy, the Irish people “have an obligation to fight for democracy around the world . . . and to play a more active role in human rights struggles in the Middle East”.....
