Q&A: Honouring the Silent Courage of Afghan Women | Inter Press Service | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

UNITED NATIONS, Nov 24 2012 (IPS) - Violence against women is internationally recognised as a threat to democracy, a burden on national economies, and a serious human rights violation.

Yet in Afghanistan today, 87 percent of women face physical, sexual or psychological violence or are forced into marriage, according to recent data from Human Rights Watch. ...

Afghan girl tortured after refusing prostitution

Afghan girl tortured after refusing prostitution | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

"This is one of the worst cases of violence against Afghan women. The perpetrators must be punished so others learn a lesson," health minister Suraya Dalil told journalists after visiting Gul Saturday with the women's affairs minister.

Mohammad Zia, a senior police official in Baghlan who helped rescue the girl, said Gul's mother-in-law and sister-in-law have been detained, but her husband and father-in-law had escaped.

"We have launched a serious hunt to get her husband and the others involved," Zia told Reuters via phone from Baghlan.

Despite progress in women's rights and freedom since the fall of the Taliban 10 years ago, women throughout the country are still at risk of abduction, rape, forced marriage and being traded as commodity.

New Statesman - Women of the Middle East

New Statesman - Women of the Middle East | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

In Bahrain, says Al Khawaja, half of the protesters are women - they read poetry, gave speeches and shared their idea's of the country's future. Other movements have been lead by women, such as the Yemeni activist Tawakkol Karman, who received the Nobel Peace Prize for her efforts a week ago. Of course there are differences between and within regions, but as Al Khawaja agues out, Islam and women's rights are not mutually exclusive and although Bahrain is a very religious country, women have professionally proven themselves in different sector of society.

...

'People have come to the realisation that you need to separate religion from government because you will never find an entire population that agrees on what Islam means, or what Sharia means,' explains Al Khawaja.

Bahrain Women Take Pride in Vital Protest Role

Bahrain Women Take Pride in Vital Protest Role | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

Both Sunni and Shiite, many women in Bahrain seem ready to criticize what they see as shortcomings of the government and the opposition......

“We as Bahraini women have to do something, for the sake of our children,” she said, her eyes welling with tears.

She is among more than 200 women who have created a “national society” — political parties are called societies — uniting women of all religious and social backgrounds.

“We women want to build a network to overcome the mess, which our men have created,” said Reem Alfaez, 39, who works in the Health Ministry and serves as the vice president of the Bahrain medical society. “We and our children are the ones caught in the middle of all this. We need real reforms in Bahrain, also of the government.”

EU censors own film on Afghan women prisoners | THE FREE SPEECH BLOG | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

In an Afghanistan prison, one woman is serving a 12-year sentence for being the victim of a rape. Another woman is serving time for running away from 10 years of abuse from her husband. These women want to tell their stories, and in late 2010, they were given the chance to speak out in an EU funded film. But post-production, the film has been blocked by the EU, leaving these women with the weight of their stories, and no forum for them to be heard.

Thousands Of Reproductive Rights Advocates March In Protest Of Ireland’s Abortion Ban

Thousands Of Reproductive Rights Advocates March In Protest Of Ireland’s Abortion Ban | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

An estimated 10,000 activists flooded the streets of Dublin on Saturday to protest Ireland’s stringent abortion policies. The predominantly Catholic country has a total ban on all abortion services, with a narrow exception in cases where a pregnancy may threaten a woman’s life. But the recent death of Savita Halappanavar — the 31-year-old Indian woman who died of blood poisoning after an Irish hospital refused to terminate her pregnancy — highlights the fact that women in Ireland struggle to access reproductive health services even when their lives may be at stake. Halappanavar’s tragic story is quickly becoming an international controversy, prompting the Irish government to promise to reexamine its abortion policy. ....
