Saudi Arabia helps crush the democratic uprising in Bahrain

Saudi Arabia helps crush the democratic uprising in Bahrain | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

"Instead of rights, every family got a political prisoner," said Nabeel Rajab, president of the Bahrain Centre for Human Rights. "After almost three months of military rule, the crisis has deepened because every family suffered when the army was sent in to solve a political problem."

Hundreds of protesters and professionals such as doctors, nurses, lawyers, and even soccer players have been arrested and tried in a special security court. Official use of torture has become widespread. According to Rajab, up to 98% of the people detained by state security forces were abused. "No one was immune," said Rajab. "Very rarely will you find someone who was arrested but not abused."

Particularly reprehensible have been the security forces’ attacks on doctors and nurses for treating protesters injured by the army and security forces. A recent report issued by Human Rights Watch details “attacks on health care providers; denial of medical access to protesters injured by security forces; the siege of hospitals and health centers; and the detention, ill-treatment, torture, and prosecution of medics and patients with protest-related injuries.”

“The attacks on medics and wounded protesters,” says Joe Stork, deputy Middle East director at Human Rights Watch, "have been part of an official policy of retribution against Bahrainis who supported pro-democracy protests. Medical personnel who criticized the severe repression were singled out and jailed."

Twenty-three doctors and 24 nurses who treated protesters were charged with treason. The BBC reported that these medical personnel were tortured into making false confessions, according to their families. On March 16, after the Saudi invasion, security forces occupied Salmaniya, Bahrain’s main public hospital. One ward of the hospital located on the sixth floor was turned into “a makeshift detention facility where security forces subjected patients to incommunicado detention, regular beatings, torture, and other forms of mistreatment,” witnesses informed Human Rights Watch.

How can countries that market arms to tyrannical regimes pretend that they do not support human rights violations? What is even more two-faced is that they then get on their high horse and interfere militarily, or subtly, in other countries because of atrocities caused by weapons supplied by themselves?

I am so nauseated by politicians supporting and selling arms to dictators then turning all shocked and appalled when those weapons are used to ensure the tyrants retain their power.

UN demands Bahrain release prisoners detained for exercising freedom of speech | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

0 August 2011 – The United Nations today demanded the release of Bahraini civilians who may have been arrested during recent anti-Government protests merely for exercising their rights to freedom of speech, and called for civilian trials for those whose cases go forward.
“We stress that civilians must be tried in civilian courts and that every detained person must be charged with a recognizable criminal offence, with adequate access to a lawyer and enough time to prepare a defence,” UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) spokesperson Rupert Colville told a news briefing in Geneva, noting that at least 264 cases remain pending, many of which may be tried in the Court of National Safety, effectively a military court.

Military Trial Verdicts Expose Bahrain’s Lack of Interest in Reform | Human Rights First

Military Trial Verdicts Expose Bahrain’s Lack of Interest in Reform | Human Rights First | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

Washington, DC – Human Rights First today condemned the harsh prison sentences confirmed by Bahrain’s military court for 21 prominent dissidents. The group said the sentences expose the government’s flawed legal process and its lack of interest in reform.
“Some of the men have credible evidence that they were tortured in custody, but they were not allowed to raise that evidence during their trial, which fell well short of any legitimate legal standard,” said Human Rights First’s Brian Dooley.
According to Dooley, eight of the 21 dissidents had life sentences confirmed in today’s appeal. Among those before the military court today were human rights activist Abdulhadi Al Khawaja and political leader Hassan Mushaima. The original June 2011 prison sentences – ranging from two years to life in prison – for the other 19 on trial were also confirmed at today’s hearing.

The story of the youths Hamad & the SF's tried to burn alive: { #humanrightsabuses-bahrain4 tag at this site}

'Police' set fires and attempt to burn people alive!- 23 Sept 2011

Video shot in Sanabis village near Manama, Bahrain on September 23, 2011 shows police leaving a home after chasing protesters inside and setting fire to it by throwing sound grenades near an opened cooking gas container according to eyewitnesses in the home. The protesters tried to escape through a garage when police officers outside tried to trap them in. Once the protesters managed to get out of the garage police fired rubber bullets at them from a close range and beat one of the youth on the street. At least seven of the protesters are being treated for third degree burns caused by the fire.

Later, when people from Sanabis were fighting to put out the flames, riot police again attacked them.

Bahrain professor sacked for human rights activities - The Irish Times - Mon, Sep 12, 2011

Bahrain professor sacked for human rights activities - The Irish Times - Mon, Sep 12, 2011 | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

DEFENDING HUMAN rights can be a perilous task. It has cost Abdulla Alderazi his job as a professor in the University of Bahrain and threatened his personal safety.

Last month he received a letter of dismissal from the university informing him of their decision, “for reasons of my activity”, he said.

In Dublin this week for a conference held by Frontline, an international organisation that supports defenders of human rights across the world, Prof Alderazi expressed an unshakeable desire to continue his work as secretary general of the Bahrain Human Rights Society.

“Otherwise the suffering of these victims will continue if we don’t go and document it and report it and show the world what happened.” What has been happening is a push from the people of Bahrain for greater political and social freedoms, in line with the sentiment crossing the region following the Arab Spring.

The professor and his society have been at the forefront of this movement which was forcibly dissolved almost two years ago for advocating personal rights.

14-year-old Ali Jawad Ahmad was killed during a peaceful demonstration in Bahrain on August 31 when security forces used excessive force and threw a tear gas canister at his head, according to his family and activists. ...

Yet activists blame security forces and are mourning Ahmad’s death by staging large-scale protests across the country.

More than thirty-two people have been killed and thousands detained since demonstrations began in February. Crackdowns have targeted anti-government activists, particularly Shiites who make up 70 percent of the population and have faced discrimination from the Sunni monarchy. Many protesters have been threatened, lost their jobs or homes, or been prevented from continuing their studies. The UN Human Rights Council added Bahrain to a list of countries to further scrutinize for human rights violations, since the government has taken extreme measures to silence both critics and journalists attempting to provide information to the outside world. An Independent Commission of Inquiry was established to investigate human rights abuses, and will release its findings in October 2011.

Freedom House is horrified at Ahmad’s death, and calls for a full investigation into the circumstances behind it. The Bahraini government must end its efforts to persecute those who have demonstrated for political reform.
